In each case, the sender and receiver need matching addresses, ports, and stream settings. VLC’s official Desktop User Documentation 3.0 provides the examples below; menus and behavior can vary in later or platform-specific builds.
Choose a VLC streaming method
These methods describe how VLC sends or makes media available on a network. They are not, by themselves, a public streaming service or a guarantee of access through every router, firewall, operating system, VLC version, or third-party player.

| Method | How delivery works | What to configure | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP | Pull: the receiver requests the stream. | Publish a port and path on the sender; open the sender’s URL on the receiver. | A receiver should connect using a straightforward URL, such as in a local-network setup. VideoLAN’s HTTP example |
| RTP unicast | Push: the sender targets a receiver. | Set the receiver’s IP address and a port on the sender; listen on the matching port on the receiver. | One known receiver. VideoLAN’s RTP example |
| RTP multicast | Push: the sender transmits to a group address. | Set a multicast group and port on the sender; join the same group and port on receivers. | Multiple receivers on a network that supports multicast. VideoLAN’s RTP example |
| RTSP session with RTP | The client requests a session; the sender negotiates parameters and delivers media over RTP. | Publish an RTSP endpoint on the sender and open that URL on the client. | When session setup and negotiation are useful. VideoLAN’s RTSP example |
| SAP with multicast | Discovery aid; it can announce multicast streams. | Use a sender and clients that support SAP on a multicast-capable network. | When clients need help discovering a multicast stream. VideoLAN’s output-module overview |
The table summarizes the cited VLC 3.0 documentation, not a universal ranking. HTTP and UDP use VLC’s standard output module; RTP uses a separate output module. VideoLAN’s module overview
Set up streaming in VLC’s interface
- Open VLC and choose Media > Stream. Select the file or other source you want to send.
- Choose the streaming method, such as HTTP, UDP, or RTP, and configure its destination details.
- Select a transcoding profile and encapsulation (mux) appropriate to the output. The VLC 3.0 tips page describes this workflow; labels may differ in newer or platform-specific versions. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 streaming tips
- Start the stream, then open the matching URL or listen on the configured port from the receiving device.
If a menu label differs, look for the equivalent stream-output or destination controls in your VLC build. The examples that follow use command-line syntax from VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 documentation.

Stream a file over HTTP
HTTP is pull-oriented: VLC makes an endpoint available, and a receiver gets media by requesting it. In the documented example, the sender streams sample.mp4 on port 8090 at the path sample:
vlc sample.mp4 --sout="#std{access=http, mux=ts, dst=:8090/sample}"
The receiver substitutes the sender’s LAN address for 192.168.0.101 and opens:
http://192.168.0.101:8090/sample
The address is an example, not a fixed value: use the sender’s current address on the local network. The example requires mux=ts; VideoLAN warns that omitting the mux makes this command fail. Choose a port and path appropriate to your system, and check local firewall rules if the receiver cannot connect. The documentation’s example does not certify every firewall or network configuration. Send with RTP
RTP unicast: one receiver
For unicast, the sender pushes the stream to a specific receiver address. Replace the example address with the receiving device’s LAN IP:

vlc sample.mp4 --sout="#rtp{mux=ts, dst=192.168.0.102, port=5010}"
On the receiver, open rtp://:5010. The sender and receiver must use the same port. VideoLAN’s guide mentions 5004 as a default RTP port but uses 5010 in its demonstration, so treat these as documentation examples rather than universal prescriptions. VideoLAN’s RTP instructions
RTP multicast: multiple receivers
For multicast, set the sender’s destination to a multicast group address instead of one receiver’s IP. The documentation illustrates 239.255.255.250 with port 5010:

When RTSP or SAP helps
RTSP for session setup
RTSP can coordinate session parameters while RTP carries the media. VideoLAN’s example starts the sender with an RTSP endpoint:

vlc sample.mp4 --sout="#rtp{sdp=rtsp://:8090/stream}"
The client opens rtsp://192.168.0.101:8090/stream, substituting the sender’s LAN address. RTSP negotiation is session control, not a replacement name for the media transport in this example. VideoLAN’s RTSP instructions
SAP for multicast discovery
SAP can help compatible clients discover multicast streams, reducing the need to enter a stream address manually. It addresses discovery on a multicast network; it does not make a stream publicly reachable or provide a production broadcasting service. VideoLAN’s output-module overview
Stream a live camera instead of a file
A camera is only needed when the source is live video. VideoLAN lists video acquisition as a VLC input capability, but that does not establish compatibility with a particular webcam model. Select the camera as the source in VLC’s streaming workflow, then configure the output method and profile as for other sources. VideoLAN’s VLC features page

Practical checks if a receiver cannot connect
- Confirm that the sender and receiver are on the intended local network and that you used the sender’s current LAN address, not the receiver’s.
- For HTTP, check that the receiver entered the exact port and path configured on the sender; confirm the output includes a mux.
- For RTP, verify that sender and receiver use the same port. For multicast, confirm the network and clients support multicast and that the group address matches.
- Check local firewall rules and any network controls that may block the connection. The VLC examples do not determine the settings for every router or operating system.
- Make sure the client supports the stream’s output format and method. VideoLAN’s streaming feature matrix lists compatibility combinations, but its version applicability is not clearly stated. VideoLAN’s streaming feature matrix
What VLC streaming does—and does not—provide
For sending a file or live input to devices on a local network, VLC supplies configurable output methods without requiring a separate broadcasting product. RTSP and SAP add session negotiation and discovery functions, respectively; neither alone establishes public internet reachability. The cited examples assume devices on the same router or local network and do not guarantee operation through arbitrary network equipment or clients.
