You can send an Indian radio station’s existing audio feed to YouTube Live with Liquidsoap, but audio alone is not a complete YouTube video stream. Add a visual source—such as a station image—combine it with the audio, encode the result in a format accepted by your current YouTube stream setup, and send it to the ingest URL with your private stream key.
The configuration below explains the workflow and an illustrative Liquidsoap example. Check the syntax and available encoders against your installed Liquidsoap and FFmpeg versions before using it; the example is not guaranteed to work unchanged on every installation.
What you need before configuring Liquidsoap
- A working radio audio source that Liquidsoap can read, such as a playlist or an existing stream source.
- A visual source for the YouTube broadcast. A still station image is the simplest option, provided you have permission to use it.
- A Liquidsoap installation with the necessary output and encoding support. Which operators and codecs are available depends on the installed build.
- A YouTube Live setup with an ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.
- Online transmission rights for the material you plan to broadcast. A station’s existing radio permissions do not automatically establish that its YouTube simulcast is covered.
Liquidsoap documents YouTube RTMP and HLS outputs. Its versioned RTMP reference uses YouTube’s RTMP URL as the default endpoint; YouTube also documents RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL and uses port 443. Use the actual ingest URL shown for your stream, and verify that your Liquidsoap installation supports the transport you select. Liquidsoap 2.2.5 reference · YouTube live streaming ingestion guide
Build the audio-and-video source
Connect the radio feed
First define a Liquidsoap source for the station’s audio. A playlist is one possible source, but use the source appropriate to your broadcast: a playlist of files, a station feed, or another supported audio source. Confirm that the source plays correctly before adding video or connecting to YouTube.

Add a visual source and mux it with the audio
An audio-only radio feed needs video for a standard audio/video live stream. The Liquidsoap book’s example uses a still image and source.mux.video to combine that visual source with the radio audio. A moving visual source may also be appropriate, but use only material cleared for the YouTube broadcast.
Illustrative configuration shape
This example shows the basic pieces together, not a drop-in configuration for every Liquidsoap version or FFmpeg build:

Its bitrate, sample rate, container and output call are example values, not a universal or current YouTube prescription. Check your installed Liquidsoap syntax, FFmpeg codec availability and the requirements displayed for your YouTube stream before settling on encoder settings. Get the YouTube ingest details and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup in Live Control Room and create or select the stream you will use.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key YouTube provides for that stream. Do not assume a URL from an older example is the right endpoint for your account.
- Configure Liquidsoap’s YouTube RTMP output or the selected supported output method with the supplied ingest details. If you choose RTMPS, verify that your installed Liquidsoap setup can use the provided secure endpoint.
- Keep the key outside public source code. The Liquidsoap book example reads it from a separate file at runtime; an equivalent secret store is also suitable. Restrict access to the key file and avoid exposing the key in screenshots, public logs or shared configuration.
- Start the Liquidsoap output and monitor the stream in YouTube Studio to confirm that the incoming video and audio are accepted.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL and specifies port 443 in its ingestion guidance. Liquidsoap’s versioned reference documents an RTMP default, so verify transport support rather than assuming the two configurations are interchangeable. Clear rights for the YouTube simulcast
Before going live, confirm that your permissions cover this particular online transmission. India’s Copyright Act addresses copyright in musical works and sound recordings, and defines broadcast broadly to include communication to the public by wire or wireless means. The Copyright Rules’ Chapter VIII sets out notice and royalty provisions associated with the statutory broadcast-licensing section, including separate notices for radio and television broadcasts. Those provisions alone do not settle whether a specific terrestrial-radio licence or statutory route covers a separate YouTube simulcast.
Check the rights for the sound recordings, compositions, lyrics, performers, territory and online platform use with the relevant rightsholders or qualified Indian counsel. YouTube’s platform enforcement is a separate issue from legal clearance: YouTube warns that a live stream may be terminated following a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. Check the stream and troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube receives audio but no usable picture: Confirm that Liquidsoap has a video source, that it is muxed with the radio source, and that the selected encoder produces video accepted by the current stream setup.
- The example fails to parse or an encoder is unavailable: The shown configuration is illustrative. Check the documentation matching your installed Liquidsoap version and inspect which FFmpeg codecs and output operators that build provides; adjust the configuration accordingly.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm the selected RTMP or RTMPS transport is supported by the installation, and inspect Liquidsoap’s output errors without exposing the key.
- The stream stops after going live: Check YouTube Studio for strike information, as YouTube recommends. Also inspect Liquidsoap’s source and output status to identify whether the incoming radio feed or the YouTube connection failed. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
- A still image is rejected or unsuitable: Confirm the visual file can be read by the configured source and that you hold the necessary rights to use it in the broadcast.
