To insert a mid-roll ad break yourself, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, turn monetization on, set the live mid-roll mode to Manual, then select each break while the stream is live. YouTube documents this standard live-stream workflow; it does not specify a separate procedure for 24/7 streams.
Set the live stream’s mid-roll mode to Manual
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the stream’s Edit → Monetization settings and make sure monetization is On. YouTube’s instructions are at Monetize your live stream.
- In the live ad settings, select Manual for mid-roll ads.
These are YouTube’s documented controls for a live stream, not steps independently tested here. The available options and labels may change as YouTube updates Live Control Room.
Insert an ad break while the stream is live
When you want to offer a mid-roll opportunity, select the manual ad-break control in Live Control Room. Repeat for each break you want to trigger. If you leave Manual mode selected and do not insert a break, YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served.
A break is an opportunity for YouTube to serve an ad, not a guarantee that every viewer sees one. Viewers who are not served an ad continue watching the stream; viewers who do receive one can rejoin after the ad ends or they skip it. See YouTube’s Tips on how ads work – Live.

Choose between Manual, Automatic, and Scheduled

YouTube says manual or scheduled selection may have lower earnings potential than automatic mid-rolls. This is a platform recommendation, not a prediction of what an individual channel will earn. YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour in January 2024, comparing channels that enabled automatic live mid-rolls with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. That reported comparison does not forecast results for a particular stream.
Optional control: Stream Deck
YouTube identifies an Elgato Stream Deck with its YouTube plugin as an optional way to insert ads. It is not required: you can use the manual controls in Live Control Room. YouTube’s help pages do not establish a particular Stream Deck model as necessary.

What changes—and does not change—for a 24/7 stream
The continuous duration of a stream does not create a separate ad-break procedure in YouTube’s published instructions. Use the standard live workflow while the broadcast is active, and trigger manual breaks when appropriate. Manual mode requires an operator to select breaks; it does not insert them on a timer. If that level of ongoing intervention is not practical, compare the timing trade-offs of Automatic and Scheduled mode above.
