To stream an Icecast MP3 station on YouTube using OBS Studio, add the station’s public listener URL as a network media source, confirm its audio reaches OBS’s outgoing mix, and connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with that event’s server URL and stream key. Icecast MP3 compatibility is not guaranteed, so test the full route before announcing a broadcast.
Before you start: get the correct Icecast URL
Ask the station operator for its public listener URL and mountpoint. A mountpoint is the path that identifies a stream resource; the full listener URL combines it with the station’s server address. The exact URL format, port, and any access requirements depend on the station’s setup.

- Use the listener URL, not source-client credentials. Do not paste or share a station password.
- Confirm that the station is online and that the URL is intended for listeners. A YouTube viewer link is not an Icecast listener URL.
- If possible, open the listener URL in a media player first. If it fails there, ask the station operator to confirm the endpoint and mountpoint before changing OBS settings.
MP3 is an important compatibility caveat: Icecast says MP3 might work but is not officially supported. The result can vary with the station’s server configuration, endpoint, and the software decoding the feed.
Add the Icecast feed to OBS
Try Media Source first
- In OBS Studio, find the Sources dock and select +.
- Choose Media Source, name the source if you want, and select OK.
- In the source properties, turn off Local File.
- Paste the complete public listener URL, including its mountpoint, into the input field. Leave station credentials out of the URL unless the operator has provided an explicitly supported listener method; do not expose private passwords.
- Select OK and start or preview playback. Watch the source’s audio meter in OBS.
OBS documents MP3 as a supported media format and demonstrates network input through Media Source with Local File disabled in its SRT guide. That guide is not an Icecast-specific recipe, so this is a practical first attempt—not a guarantee that every Icecast MP3 endpoint will open unchanged.

If Media Source cannot open or decode the feed
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC libraries, and the source may not appear without VLC.
- Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In Sources, select +, choose VLC Video, and configure it to use the Icecast listener URL as the network input. The exact controls can vary by OBS version.
- Check playback and the audio meter again. If the source still fails, reconfirm the URL, mountpoint, station status, and any listener access requirements with the operator.
OBS documents a 400 ms network-caching default for VLC Video. Treat it as a source-specific documented default, not a universal Icecast cache recommendation; adjust caching cautiously only if buffering is a problem.
Make sure OBS sends the feed’s audio
A source can play in OBS yet fail to reach the stream if it is muted or routed to the wrong audio track. Before connecting to YouTube, verify the outgoing mix:

- Speak or play the station feed and confirm the relevant OBS audio meter moves.
- Check that the source is not muted and that its audio is assigned to the track used for streaming.
- If you use other audio sources, avoid unintentionally mixing them into the broadcast.
- Listen to a private or unlisted test broadcast from YouTube’s receiving end. An active OBS meter alone does not prove YouTube is receiving audible sound.
Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or open the event you intend to use.
- Copy that event’s ingest server URL and stream key. The server URL is for the encoder; it is different from the viewer-facing YouTube watch URL.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service or the available custom-server option, and enter the server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your event.
- Apply the settings, start streaming from OBS, and check YouTube Studio for the incoming preview and stream-health messages before making the event public.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides it for the event.
Choose audio and encoder settings, then test
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio. For this audio-led use, choose settings your computer and upload connection can sustain; a complicated video scene is not necessary just to carry the feed, but OBS still needs a valid visual scene for the broadcast.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video: Use a modest still or simple looping visual if appropriate. Select a resolution and bitrate that your hardware and upload connection can sustain rather than spending bitrate on an unnecessary complex scene.
- Ingest: Use the event’s supplied server URL and key, preferably RTMPS when available.
Before the real broadcast, test with the actual Icecast feed and intended visual. Confirm sound at YouTube’s end, inspect stream health and warning messages, and watch for disconnects. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream; do not assume that successful playback in OBS proves the complete route works.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Media Source does not play | Confirm Local File is off; check that the URL is the public listener endpoint and includes the correct mountpoint; verify the station is online. Because Icecast does not officially support MP3, try VLC Video if the endpoint is valid but the built-in source cannot decode it. |
| VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu | Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS. OBS requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
| OBS audio meter does not move | Check the listener URL, mountpoint, station availability, source playback state, and whether the station requires a particular listener URL or authentication. Try VLC Video if the MP3 feed may not be decoding in Media Source. |
| OBS meter moves, but the YouTube test is silent | Check source mute state and audio-track assignment, then verify the track is included in the stream mix. Listen to the received YouTube test rather than relying only on OBS’s meter. |
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Confirm that OBS has the current event’s ingest server URL and stream key, that the key was copied correctly, and that OBS is streaming. Use the ingest URL—not the viewer link—and check YouTube Studio for health messages. |
| Playback buffers or drops | Check station availability and your network connection, then inspect OBS and YouTube health messages. If using VLC Video, adjust its network caching cautiously; the documented 400 ms default is for that source property, not a universal Icecast setting. |
Or let it run in the cloud
The OBS workflow above is for relaying a live Icecast feed. StreamNeo is a different option for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube; it does not take a live camera or Icecast feed as its source.

Can I use an Icecast source password in OBS?
Use the public listener URL supplied for listeners, not source-client credentials. Ask the station operator how listener access is configured if the feed is restricted.

Does this setup guarantee that every Icecast MP3 stream will work?
No. Icecast says MP3 might work but is not officially supported, and the endpoint and decoder configuration can affect compatibility.
