A Mumbai location alone does not guarantee a suitable VPS plan or a stable route to YouTube; check the provider’s region and egress terms, then test from the instance.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a Live Control Room event.
- A VPS that can sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate and has enough CPU if FFmpeg will transcode.
- Media files accessible on the VPS, plus an FFmpeg build with the encoders you plan to use. The example below requires
libx264. - The event’s RTMPS URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password.
YouTube accepts encoder input using RTMP or RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1, CBR encoding, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
1. Create or select the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create an event or select one you have already scheduled.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS address when your FFmpeg build and event support it. YouTube describes the key as part of the encoder connection setup; reset it if it is exposed.
- Choose the event’s privacy and latency settings. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but YouTube warns it can increase buffering. Choose according to whether real-time audience interaction matters.
Keep the key out of public shell history, shared logs, screenshots, and source-controlled files. Use a protected environment or service configuration, and limit access to it.
2. Prepare the playlist
For a sequence of files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a playlist file. For example, save this as /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat:

file '/srv/media/clip-01.mp4'
file '/srv/media/clip-02.mp4'
file '/srv/media/clip-03.mp4'
The paths are examples; replace them with files that exist on your VPS. The concat demuxer can join compatible files without re-encoding. That works cleanly only when their stream parameters match. If codecs, dimensions, frame rates, time bases, or audio layouts differ, normalize or re-encode the inputs rather than assuming stream copy will work. FFmpeg also documents the concat filter for joining inputs as part of a re-encoding workflow. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
3. Set a YouTube-compatible output profile
For H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrates include these examples, checked against its current guidance in 2026:
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)

| Output | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
These are video bitrates, not the complete network requirement: audio and transport overhead add to the total. Choose the resolution and frame rate your content needs and your VPS can encode and upload reliably. Higher output quality requires more bandwidth; transcoding also requires adequate CPU. YouTube’s recommended values are not a measurement of any particular Mumbai VPS.
4. Run a paced, looping FFmpeg stream
This illustrative command loops the playlist, reads it at real-time speed, encodes H.264 video and stereo AAC audio, and sends an FLV-muxed stream to an RTMPS destination:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M
-g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This is a documentation-based template, not a tested command. The example assumes a 720p30 H.264 target and uses 6 Mbps video, YouTube’s recommendation for that profile. Set the output resolution and frame rate explicitly if the playlist does not already have the intended format. Set -g to roughly two seconds’ worth of frames: 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. Confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports libx264, and use the exact RTMPS URL format shown for your event.
Define YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY through a protected environment or service configuration rather than putting the secret directly into a command that may be saved in shell history. FFmpeg documents -re for real-time input reading and -stream_loop for repeating an input; see its command-line documentation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not apply -re to an actual live network input: FFmpeg cautions that imposing a low read rate on a live source can cause packet loss. For a file playlist, real-time pacing prevents FFmpeg from sending the media faster than its playback rate.
5. Test bandwidth and confirm the live preview
YouTube says the upload capacity should exceed the total stream bitrate and recommends 20% headroom. Measure sustained outbound capacity from the VPS itself, including the audio and overhead beyond the configured video bitrate. A hosting plan’s advertised download speed does not establish its upload capacity or route stability to YouTube. YouTube also warns that a connectivity disruption can break the stream; consult its streaming tips.

- Start with a private or unlisted test event, or an appropriate test configuration for your channel.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check stream-health messages before treating the setup as ready.
- Confirm there is both moving video and audible sound in the preview, then check playback on another device.
- Watch the stream health and the VPS process during the test. YouTube advises setting up the encoder ahead of time and monitoring the event.
6. Plan for disconnects and broadcasts longer than 12 hours
FFmpeg documents FIFO muxer recovery behavior for certain temporary output failures, but that does not guarantee end-to-end continuity through every network problem or YouTube event. Test recovery using your actual FFmpeg build and stream configuration. If FFmpeg itself must restart after a process failure, use a process supervisor and confirm how YouTube handles reconnects for your selected event. The FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation describes its recovery options.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your playlist is intended to run longer, treat archiving and event restarts as a separate operating requirement: define how the event will be restarted, decide what recordings you need, and verify the workflow before relying on it. See YouTube’s encoder setup help.
RTMP or RTMPS, and what Mumbai changes
Use RTMPS when your FFmpeg build and YouTube event support it: YouTube recommends it as the encrypted extension of RTMP. Mumbai is a VPS location, not a guarantee about YouTube routing, sustained egress, or provider availability. Confirm that the provider actually offers a Mumbai region, check plan-specific outbound limits, and test the instance’s upload and route stability. No particular provider or plan can be recommended from location alone.
Common problems and fixes
- The event does not receive a signal: check that the stream URL and key match the selected event, that live streaming is enabled, and that outbound connectivity from the VPS works. Avoid exposing the key while checking it.
- The playlist fails at a file transition: inspect whether the files have compatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates, time bases, and audio layouts. Normalize or re-encode incompatible inputs.
- The video or audio is missing: inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages; verify the playlist contains the expected streams and the chosen output profile is supported.
- The stream buffers or drops: measure sustained upload from the VPS, account for audio and overhead, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check packet loss and route stability rather than relying on advertised download speed.
- FFmpeg exits during a long run: examine the process logs, test any FIFO recovery settings with the actual output, and configure a supervisor if process restarts are required. Verify YouTube’s behavior after reconnecting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a VPS and FFmpeg process is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video rather than streaming from a camera.
