A 24/7 YouTube lofi stream needs three pieces: a playlist of music and visuals, playout automation to play it continuously, and an encoder that sends the combined program to YouTube Live. A “playlist bot” can mean an OBS extension, a media-playout pipeline, or a hosted service; the term does not identify one specific tool. Before going live, clear the rights to every track and visual, test the whole chain, and decide how you will handle outages and saved replays.
How the playlist-bot setup works
The playlist supplies the media, playout automation decides what plays next, and an encoder packages the audio and video for YouTube Live. In some tools these jobs are combined; in others, an OBS extension handles playback while OBS encodes the output. YouTube describes broadcasts and their incoming streams as related but distinct parts of a live workflow in its Live Streaming API documentation.
For a basic setup, use an ordered playlist or a shuffle schedule, add a static or animated visual you are licensed to use, send the resulting program through an encoder, and connect that encoder to a YouTube Live stream. “24/7” describes the intended continuous broadcast, not a guarantee that files, equipment, network, YouTube, or rights checks will never interrupt it.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. Follow the current verification and readiness flow shown for your account in YouTube Studio; do not rely on old claims about how long activation takes.
- Music tracks and visual assets that you own or are expressly permitted to stream. Permission to download or listen to music does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
- A playlist or automation tool, an encoder such as OBS for a local workflow, and a stable upload connection if you operate the encoder yourself.
- A plan for monitoring the broadcast and for keeping a replay, if you need one.
Choose where playout runs
The main decision is whether to run the playlist and encoder on equipment you manage or use a hosted cloud playout service. A mini PC can be one option for a self-hosted setup, but no particular model or minimum specification is established here; check the chosen encoder’s current requirements against your media and stream settings.

| Consideration | Local encoder and playlist automation | Hosted cloud playout |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Your computer or a machine/VPS you manage. | The provider’s infrastructure, according to its service description. Looping Stream describes a workflow in which you upload media and create a playlist without leaving a personal computer on. |
| Control | Direct access to local files, encoder settings, and automation. | Depends on the provider’s dashboard, supported media, and available workflow. |
| Always-on dependency | The computer or managed machine, its power, and its network must remain available. A VPS changes where the machine is hosted but still needs configuration and oversight. | Your personal computer need not remain online, according to the provider’s description; that is not independent reliability testing. |
| Cost | Hardware and electricity, or VPS charges. No verified cost comparison is available. | Provider subscription or usage terms. Check current terms directly; no comparative price assessment is established here. |
| Recovery | Process supervision and restart logic can help, but test real failure scenarios. One operator’s FFmpeg setup notes describe restart handling as well as freeze issues; treat this as an example, not a guarantee. | Recovery depends on the provider’s actual service and terms. Vendor claims should not be treated as independent uptime evidence. |
There is no universal winner: local operation offers hands-on control but ties continuity to the managed equipment and connection; hosted playout removes the personal-computer dependency but makes the workflow dependent on the provider. Neither is “set and forget.” Bad media, a changed stream key, network failures, and copyright matching can all disrupt a broadcast.
Prepare the channel and clear the content
- Confirm live access. Open YouTube Studio and check that your channel is eligible and ready to create a live stream. Use the stream configuration shown in Studio for the broadcast you plan to run.
- Clear every asset. Use music and visuals you created or have permission to broadcast on YouTube. For licensed third-party music, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID before the stream starts.
- Keep a rights record. Store license terms and track/artist metadata alongside the playlist. This is useful operational documentation, not a legal ruling about whether a particular license covers live streaming.
- Plan an archive strategy. Decide whether you need a saved replay. Continuous live delivery and automatic replay capture are separate matters.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; even licensed material may need the rights owner to allowlist the channel. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Build and test the playlist automation
Make a playlist that can run for the intended duration, then configure the tool’s available loop, shuffle, startup, and resume behavior. For a lofi channel, decide whether listeners should hear tracks in a fixed sequence or a shuffled order, and make transitions and volume levels consistent before launch.
The public 24/7 Playout project for OBS advertises looping, shuffle, autostart, and resume features. Those project-listed features do not establish compatibility with every OBS version or YouTube workflow. Read the project’s current documentation and test your own files in a short private or unlisted stream before relying on it.

Configure the encoder for YouTube Live
For standard live delivery, YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted transport. Match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the visual you are producing and to YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for that combination. YouTube transcodes live video into multiple output formats, so viewers may receive different playback versions. The recommended settings can change; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before launch.
- Transport: use RTMPS for the standard workflow unless your production requirements call for another supported ingest method.
- Rate control: set constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for live encoder settings.
- Keyframes: use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube’s advanced encoder guidance recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Choose an audio sample rate and channel layout supported by your encoder and source files.
- Video bitrate: follow the current YouTube table for your selected resolution and frame rate, and ensure your available upload bandwidth can sustain the stream.
Do not choose settings based only on a still-image lofi scene: test representative audio and any motion, overlays, or animations you will actually use. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and review warnings during the test and live event.

When HLS is relevant
HLS is a separate YouTube ingest option, not a synonym for the standard RTMPS setup. It may suit certain codec or HDR workflows, but YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Its documented requirements include segments of 1–4 seconds, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. Unless your encoder or production requirements call for HLS, a beginner playlist-bot setup can use the standard RTMPS workflow. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connect the stream and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use the stream configuration shown for it.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP/RTMPS fields as appropriate for that encoder. Follow its current instructions; labels vary between tools.
- Start the encoder and confirm in Studio that YouTube is receiving the feed and reporting healthy stream status before you make the broadcast public.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or repositories. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Monitor the broadcast and handle failures
Check YouTube stream health and messages, and verify playlist transitions, audio levels, and visuals after launch. An unattended stream still needs a way for someone to notice a failure and act on it. If running locally, consider tested process supervision or restart behavior; an FFmpeg/VPS example is an advanced implementation, not a plug-and-play reliability promise.

- Broadcast interrupted for a rights match: review YouTube’s notice and resolve the rights issue with the owner. If the material is licensed, confirm the license covers live streaming and ask whether Content ID allowlisting is required.
- Stream stops after an outage: test whether the encoder or hosted workflow reconnects and resumes the playlist; do not assume recovery works until you have tested it.
Plan saved replays separately
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, end and restart the broadcast before it exceeds that threshold, and consider making a local recording backup. Archive capture is not the same as keeping the live stream running. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
