How to Stream an Audio Playlist with a Static Background to YouTube Using FFmpeg

A practical guide to sending an audio playlist with a static image to YouTube Live using FFmpeg, including ingestion setup, output settings, testing, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream an audio playlist with a static background to YouTube using FFmpeg, create a YouTube live stream, retrieve its current ingestion details, give FFmpeg a still image for video and your playlist for audio, then check the result in YouTube Live Control Room. This creates a live broadcast—not a normal on-demand upload. The example below is a starting point, not a verified universal command: FFmpeg builds and playlist behavior vary, so test it with your files before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming available and access to its Live Control Room.
  • A current FFmpeg build. Check the installed version with ffmpeg -version; available options and behavior can vary by build.
  • A still image to use as the video track, such as a JPG or PNG, and audio files you have permission to broadcast.
  • A stable upload connection with enough headroom for your chosen video and audio bitrates.

YouTube requires the broadcast to carry video as well as audio for this setup, so the still image is not optional. Rights matter too: having an audio file does not necessarily give you permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and monetization policies before broadcasting; a static image does not make copyrighted music or repetitive content permissible.

1. Create the YouTube live stream and get its ingestion details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use, and review its title, visibility, audience, and scheduling settings.
  2. In the encoder or stream settings, retrieve the current ingestion URL and stream name (the stream key). Use the values shown for this stream rather than copying a key from an old setup.
  3. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; its developer guide specifies the rtmps protocol and port 443. Some encoders accept the URL and stream name separately; others require them joined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the format FFmpeg expects for your selected endpoint.

Keep the stream name private. Do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, log, source-control repository, or shared configuration. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before the next broadcast. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

2. Prepare the playlist and background image

Make a concat playlist file

One possible approach is FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. Create a text file named playlist.txt with one entry per audio file, for example:

file '/absolute/path/song-01.mp3'
file '/absolute/path/song-02.mp3'
file '/absolute/path/song-03.mp3'

Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. If filenames contain quotes, unusual characters, or relative paths, check the concat demuxer’s quoting and safety requirements in the FFmpeg documentation. This playlist form alone does not establish that tracks will transition gaplessly.

Choose an image and output format

Use an image whose shape matches the intended output frame (for example, landscape 16:9 for a conventional YouTube video). FFmpeg can scale and pad it, but that may soften the image or add bars. A still image can be encoded as a continuous video stream; choose the resolution and frame rate based on the image, connection capacity, and YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming a static frame needs no upload bandwidth.

3. Build and review an FFmpeg command

The following illustrates the pieces to connect: a looped still-image input, a playlist input, explicit video and audio mapping, encoding, and an RTMPS output. It is not a tested, drop-in command. In particular, confirm option scope, playlist looping, input duration, mapping, and how your installed FFmpeg exits when an input ends.

ffmpeg
  -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i background.jpg
  -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_NAME"

Replace the endpoint placeholder with the current YouTube ingestion URL and stream name in the format your FFmpeg build and endpoint require. Do not publish that command with the real stream name. The example uses a 30 fps output and a 60-frame GOP, corresponding to a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm that the options are accepted and interpreted as intended by your build.

Check output settings against YouTube’s current guidance

  • Video codec: The command uses H.264. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 options; compatibility depends on the chosen workflow and encoder.
  • Video bitrate: Set an appropriate constant bitrate and consult YouTube’s current table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. There is no single correct video bitrate for every still-image broadcast. Leave upload headroom rather than running at the full capacity of your connection.
  • Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval where possible, and do not exceed four seconds, per YouTube’s guidance.
  • Audio: YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps stereo for a simple stereo stream. The example requests AAC at those values; do not assume every source file must be resampled or that the command preserves every source property.
  • Rate control and format: YouTube’s guidance calls for CBR encoding for live video. The sample does not specify a complete rate-control configuration, so add and verify the relevant encoder options for your FFmpeg build and chosen bitrate before using it in production.

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the applicable codec and output mode. The platform transcodes live streams for viewers; your ingest settings should therefore prioritize a stable upload and a healthy incoming feed.

Decide whether the playlist should repeat

A playlist that plays once and a playlist that repeats indefinitely are different jobs. The example requests looping of the concat input, but do not assume that this produces the repeat behavior you want with every file and build. Test the end of the list, the transition back to its start, and the behavior if a file is missing or has a different format. Do not promise gapless playback without testing the chosen files and command.

4. Test in Live Control Room before the broadcast

  1. Start FFmpeg with a short, representative playlist and monitor its output for errors, missing inputs, and encoder or connection failures.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview for both a visible still image and audible sound. Confirm the audio advances as intended and the image remains present.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream health and any messages before making the broadcast public or relying on it for a scheduled event.
  4. During the live broadcast, keep watching FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Have a plan to stop and restart with corrected settings if the stream drops or the preview is unhealthy.

YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event and monitoring stream health. The image and playlist checks above apply that advice to this particular format.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect, stale, or mismatched ingestion URL or stream name; unsupported endpoint format; network or encoder failure. Copy the current details from the Live Control Room, verify whether your encoder expects separate values or a joined URL, prefer RTMPS where supported, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection errors.
Preview has sound but no picture The image input did not open, the video stream was not mapped, or video encoding failed. Check the image path and format, confirm the command maps 0:v:0, and inspect FFmpeg output for video encoder errors.
Preview has a picture but no sound Playlist paths or formats are invalid, the audio stream is absent, or audio mapping/encoding failed. Check each file entry and confirm the intended audio input is mapped. Test with one known-good file before debugging the full playlist.
Broadcast stops at the end of a track or playlist The audio input reached its end or loop behavior is not what the command assumes. Test the playlist’s end behavior with the installed FFmpeg build. Confirm the still-image duration and audio-loop settings both cover the intended broadcast.
Tracks have gaps, clicks, or unexpected order Playlist ordering, file compatibility, timestamps, or transition behavior differs from expectations. Verify the playlist entries and test consecutive transitions with the actual files. The concat approach does not guarantee seamless transitions.
YouTube reports poor stream health or drops frames Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or output settings exceed what the connection sustains. Compare actual upload capacity with the combined stream bitrate, reduce the chosen video settings if needed, and retest while watching YouTube’s health indicators.
FFmpeg rejects an option or behaves differently Option support or scope differs by version/build, or an option is placed before the wrong input/output. Check ffmpeg -version and the relevant option documentation, then test a short run with the installed build before reconnecting to YouTube.
