Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can stream a playlist stored in Amazon S3 to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by first downloading the authorized S3 objects, ordering compatible files in an FFmpeg concat manifest, and sending FFmpeg’s output to YouTube over RTMPS. S3 stores the media; it does not, by itself, make a private bucket into a YouTube live feed. The steps below use local staging because AWS documents ways to retrieve objects, FFmpeg documents how its concat demuxer reads files, and YouTube documents its ingest workflow separately. This is a component-based example, not a tested one-command S3-to-YouTube integration.
What you need before you start
- An S3 bucket and permission to retrieve the objects you intend to stream. For another account’s objects, the owner may need to provide authorized access, such as a presigned URL.
- A machine or compute instance that can reach S3 and YouTube, has FFmpeg installed, and can remain on with a working outbound network connection for the entire broadcast.
- A YouTube channel able to use Live Control Room, plus the current ingest address and stream key for the stream you create.
- A set of media files with compatible streams if you plan to use concat demuxer stream copying. Otherwise, be ready to normalize or re-encode them.
AWS notes that GET requests and external data transfer may incur charges. The amount depends on your usage and AWS pricing; no fixed cost applies to every bucket or stream.

1. Retrieve the S3 objects to a working directory
For a playlist that does not change during the broadcast, downloading the selected files first is the simplest workflow to inspect and reproduce. AWS documents retrieval through the console, CLI, SDKs, and REST API. Its CLI supports individual object downloads with aws s3api get-object and syncing a bucket prefix with the CLI.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, after configuring an authorized AWS CLI identity, sync the prefix containing the media:

mkdir -p media
aws s3 sync s3://YOUR-BUCKET/YOUR-PREFIX/ ./media/
Replace the bucket and prefix with the actual S3 location. The command copies the objects under that prefix into ./media/; it does not choose a playback order. Review the downloaded files and make the intended order explicit in the next step. Do not put long-lived AWS credentials in a script, playlist, or URL. Use the AWS credential mechanism appropriate to the host, and restrict its permissions to the objects it needs.
Local staging or remote reads?
Local staging makes the files available to FFmpeg without requiring the stream process to fetch each object as it plays. It also gives you a stable set of files to validate before going live. Reading objects remotely can avoid keeping a full local copy, but the reviewed AWS and FFmpeg documentation does not establish a universal authenticated S3 URL scheme for this live-playlist workflow. Do not assume a private bucket can be passed directly as a playlist input; establish and test the authentication and input method for your exact FFmpeg build before relying on it.
2. Create an ordered FFmpeg concat manifest
Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt in the same directory as the clips. Add one file entry for each clip, in the order you want YouTube viewers to hear and see them:

file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
Use names that match the downloaded files exactly. The manifest order, not S3 listing order, determines playback order. The concat demuxer reads the entries sequentially and adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration.
Check compatibility before choosing stream copy
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. Compare the media characteristics of every listed file; if they differ, do not assume that stream copy will reconcile them. Normalize or re-encode incompatible clips to a common format, then validate the resulting sequence before broadcasting.
Duration metadata matters too. Inaccurate or unavailable duration information can produce timestamp artifacts at clip boundaries. The concat demuxer supports duration directives to override inaccurate or missing durations, but use a measured, correct value for the specific file rather than guessing. If the picture or audio jumps, stalls, or breaks at a boundary, inspect compatibility and durations first.

Loop the manifest
For a playlist that should repeat, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option can loop the concat input indefinitely. Put the option before the input it applies to, as in the command below. The playlist is read from the local manifest: this does not continuously refresh the S3 prefix or add objects uploaded after the manifest was made.
3. Create the YouTube Live stream and keep its key private
- In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast/stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current server or ingestion address and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s API model treats the live feed and the broadcast as separate resources; API-based setups create both and bind them. In the Studio workflow, use the connection details associated with the selected stream.
- Keep the stream key secret. Anyone with the active key and ingest address may be able to send video to that stream. Do not commit it to source control, include it in a public script, or paste it into a public log.
- For the command below, set
YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URLto the complete RTMPS destination in the format expected by your encoder, including the stream name/key where required. Some encoder fields ask for a server address and a separate key; others use a combined destination. Follow the exact fields shown by YouTube and your FFmpeg setup rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
YouTube’s API ingestion resource exposes primary and backup addresses. Depending on the encoder’s input fields, the stream name may need to be joined to the server URL. Use the current values YouTube provides for your broadcast; do not reuse an old key or guess the destination path.
4. Send the playlist to YouTube over RTMPS
For ordinary encoder-based streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted transport. This illustrative command loops the local concat manifest, encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, and sends the result to the destination stored in YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL:

export YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='PASTE-THE-CURRENT-RTMPS-DESTINATION-HERE'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -b:v 14M
-c:a aac
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"
This example uses 14 Mbps video bitrate as YouTube Help’s recommendation for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, not as a guarantee of stream quality. That bitrate is appropriate only if your source and chosen output settings are 1080p30 H.264. For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube Help recommends 8 Mbps. YouTube publishes different guidance for other resolutions, frame rates, codecs, and settings; consult its current encoder table and match the command to the output you actually intend to send. Sustained upload capacity must also accommodate the output reliably.
The command is not a universal profile for every source. Add or change output resolution and frame-rate settings only after deciding the target and checking YouTube’s current recommendations. Check the current keyframe guidance as well; no single keyframe interval is asserted here for every output. If the source clips do not share compatible characteristics, encode to a consistent output rather than relying on stream copy.
Keep the terminal process running and the host connected throughout the stream. If the process exits, the host loses network access, or the media becomes unavailable, FFmpeg cannot continue sending the feed. A cloud compute host is an optional way to keep an encoder environment running, but it brings its own costs, access controls, and operational monitoring.

5. Test before the public broadcast
- Use a private or unlisted test broadcast, or YouTube’s testing workflow where available, before the intended public event.
- Start FFmpeg with clips that represent the real playlist: include typical motion, audio, and transitions between files.
- Wait for the stream preview and inspect both picture and sound. Check clip boundaries, not only the opening seconds.
- Review YouTube’s stream health and status feedback for warnings, then adjust the encoder settings to the current guidance for your target format.
- Check the audience-facing watch page as well as the encoder preview. For scheduled streams, YouTube Help describes waiting for the preview before selecting Go live.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops. That is the behavior described on the help page accessed in 2026; confirm current platform behavior if archiving is part of your production plan.
RTMPS versus YouTube HLS ingestion
Do not confuse an HLS playlist stored in S3 or used as an FFmpeg input with YouTube’s HLS ingestion protocol. For an ordinary prerecorded playlist encoded by FFmpeg, RTMPS is the clearer default in YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube HLS ingestion has its own requirements: muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, HTTPS upload, and Media Playlists plus media segments. YouTube says Master Playlists are ignored and characterizes HLS ingestion as relatively higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Choose HLS only when you specifically need that ingest path and can produce its required payload.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports no incoming feed | The stream is not configured in Live Control Room, or the destination/key is wrong or stale. | Confirm the selected stream, current ingest address, and current stream key. Check whether your encoder expects one combined URL or separate server and key fields. |
| Playback breaks at a clip boundary | Files have mismatched streams, codecs, time bases, or inaccurate duration metadata. | Inspect each file’s characteristics and durations. Normalize or re-encode mismatched clips; use a concat duration override only when you know the correct duration. |
| Picture or audio is missing | The manifest may include files with different or absent streams, or the selected output mapping/encoding does not match the source. | Check all playlist entries and verify that the intended video and audio are present and compatible. Test the actual sequence before the public event. |
| YouTube shows quality warnings | The configured output may not match YouTube’s current recommendations, or the connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. | Review YouTube stream health and the current encoder guidance for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec. Confirm sustained upload capacity. |
| New S3 uploads do not appear in the running loop | The local files and manifest were staged before those objects were uploaded. | Stop and rebuild or update the staged playlist deliberately, then test the revised manifest. This example does not implement live bucket polling or automatic manifest refresh. |
| FFmpeg exits or the broadcast stops unexpectedly | The encoder process, host, media access, or outbound network connection is no longer available. | Check FFmpeg output, host availability, network access, and the files referenced by the manifest. For a continuously running setup, plan how the process and host will be monitored and restarted. |
