To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a Windows laptop, use OBS Studio: add the video as a looping Media Source, connect OBS to a stream created in YouTube Studio, and set the bitrate to fit your measured, stable BSNL upload speed. Test the complete stream before relying on it; a plan’s advertised download speed does not show whether its upload can sustain a live broadcast.

Before you start: check YouTube eligibility and activation

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
  • If this is your first live stream, YouTube activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable the feature well before the time you intend to broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
  • Have the video file ready on the laptop, and check that its sound plays correctly. The laptop must remain powered on and connected to the internet for the whole DIY broadcast.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create or manage the stream using YouTube’s encoder workflow. Exact labels can vary as Studio changes.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. In OBS, you will enter these under stream settings. YouTube’s setup guide explains the encoder connection: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Treat the key like a password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream. Do not publish it, show it in a screen recording, or share it unnecessarily. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.

Build a single-video loop in OBS on Windows

  1. Install and open OBS Studio, then create a scene for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + > Media Source. Create a new source, choose the local video file, and enable Loop in its properties. OBS defines this setting as replaying the file after playback completes. Supported formats listed by OBS include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See OBS: Media Sources.
  3. Check the OBS preview: confirm the video is framed as intended and that its audio meter responds. Listen to the audio, and let the file reach its end to verify it restarts cleanly. If the source has no audio, check the file itself before troubleshooting the stream.
  4. For a sequence of videos rather than one repeating file, OBS documents a VLC Video source with a looping playlist. It requires VLC installed; use it when the program should cycle through multiple files instead of repeating one Media Source.

Connect OBS to YouTube and choose output settings

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube or YouTube RTMPS if offered, then enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for a typical SDR stream. HLS is a separate ingestion option with different encoder requirements and higher latency; it is not needed for an ordinary loop. See YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  2. Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder. YouTube’s general guidance calls for H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. OBS setting names may differ slightly by version and selected encoder; follow the available controls and YouTube’s current guidance.
  3. In Settings > Video, choose an output resolution and frame rate suited to the source and laptop. Do not upscale a lower-resolution file expecting added detail. If the laptop struggles to encode the selected output, reduce the resolution or frame rate and test again.
  4. Set the bitrate only after measuring the BSNL connection’s upload capacity. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include these examples:
Output YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a statement about any BSNL plan or a guarantee that your line can sustain them. YouTube advises leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for the primary stream, any backup stream, and other traffic. Its guidance also notes that download speed is often greater than upload speed. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before broadcast; the figures above reflect the page values available on October 3, 2026.

Measure BSNL upload and choose a stable quality

  1. Run an upload-speed test on the same connection and in the place and time you expect to stream. Pay attention to upload, not just download.
  2. Do not set the OBS bitrate equal to a brief speed-test result. Leave room for normal variation, household traffic, and YouTube’s recommended headroom. A speed test is a snapshot; a sustained stream test is more informative.
  3. Pick the highest resolution and frame rate that your measured, stable upload and laptop can support with reserve capacity. If stability is uncertain, start lower. A continuous lower-quality picture is preferable to a sharper feed that repeatedly drops frames.
  4. For example, if a test briefly reports enough upload for a listed bitrate, that alone does not establish the connection will hold it for hours. Try the chosen setting over a sustained test and reduce it if OBS or YouTube reports problems.

YouTube’s network advice says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends approximately 20% headroom. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance also suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. These are different rules of thumb, not interchangeable guarantees; use a conservative setting and validate it on the actual connection. Run a full test before the real broadcast

  1. Start the stream from OBS and check that the Live Control Room preview receives the intended video and audio.
  2. Let the test run long enough to reveal upload variation rather than checking only that it connects. Use similar audio and movement to the planned loop, and observe YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages.
  3. Verify that the video loops at the end, audio remains present, and OBS does not show a worsening dropped-frame count. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing with similar content and monitoring stream health: YouTube: Streaming tips.
  4. End the test through the normal controls and confirm the stream ends as expected in Live Control Room. Before the actual broadcast, check the selected scene, source file, stream key, and connection again.

Keep the Windows laptop and network ready

  • Keep the laptop connected to power and prevent Windows from sleeping or hibernating during the broadcast; if it sleeps, OBS cannot keep sending the feed.
  • Close or pause activities that compete for upload bandwidth, such as large file uploads or cloud backups. Other household traffic can also affect the stream.
  • If practical, connect the laptop to the router by Ethernet. A cable can remove Wi-Fi as a local source of variation, but it does not increase the BSNL plan’s provisioned upload speed or fix ISP congestion and outages. Confirm that the laptop and router have compatible Ethernet ports before buying an adapter.
  • Measure and test at the location where the laptop will actually run. BSNL upload performance is not established universally across plans or locations; the specific plan, router, local network, and ISP conditions matter.

Troubleshoot a loop that will not stay live

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
OBS shows dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator Upload is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; other traffic may be using capacity. Reduce OBS video bitrate, pause competing uploads, and run another sustained test. OBS identifies dropped frames and a warning connection indicator as signs of connection trouble. OBS connection troubleshooting
OBS connects but YouTube preview does not show the feed The stream URL or key may be wrong, or the stream may not be configured as expected in Live Control Room. Check that OBS uses the URL and key for the intended stream. If the key may have been exposed or copied incorrectly, replace it in Studio and update OBS.
Video appears but there is no sound The source file may be silent, or its audio may not be reaching OBS. Play the file locally, watch the OBS audio meter while it plays, and confirm the expected audio source is enabled before testing again.
The video stops instead of repeating The Media Source Loop option may be off or the wrong source may be active. Open the Media Source properties, enable Loop, and test through the end of the file.
Stream quality is inconsistent despite a fast download test Download speed does not establish upload performance, and a brief test does not prove sustained stability. Measure upload on the intended connection, lower bitrate to leave reserve capacity, and test the complete stream over time.
Broadcast stops when the laptop is unattended Windows may sleep, lose power, or the local connection may be interrupted. Keep the laptop powered, prevent sleep during streaming, and check its network path. If the underlying BSNL service itself is down, changing OBS settings cannot restore the ISP connection.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Looping a video does not grant permission to use its music, footage, or other material. Use content you made or are authorized to stream, and check the relevant rights before broadcasting. A live stream can be interrupted if YouTube detects material that violates its policies or rights. Repeating a video also does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization; YouTube applies its channel and monetization policies separately. Check YouTube’s current live streaming restrictions and YouTube channel monetization policies.
