To broadcast prerecorded videos as a YouTube Live event from Google Cloud, run an encoder in a cloud environment, configure it to play the videos in order, and send its continuous output to the stream URL and key created in YouTube Live Control Room. Cloud Storage alone does not turn a playlist into a live broadcast. If you want viewers to choose videos on demand instead, use Google Cloud’s separate video-on-demand (VOD) workflow.
Choose between a YouTube Live broadcast and on-demand video
The right setup depends on how viewers should watch. A YouTube Live event presents a continuous broadcast on YouTube; a VOD service lets viewers select and play stored videos through your own application or website.

| Need | Input and processing | Where viewers watch |
|---|---|---|
| Play prerecorded items as a YouTube Live event | An encoder reads or assembles the videos into a continuous feed and sends it to YouTube’s live ingest URL and stream key. | The YouTube live watch page. |
| Offer prerecorded videos for on-demand playback | Store source files in Cloud Storage, transcode them with Transcoder API into HLS or MPEG-DASH, and store the outputs in Cloud Storage. Media CDN is an optional delivery layer. | A compatible player in your application or website. |
Google’s video-on-demand overview describes the VOD pipeline. It is not a recipe for sending a Cloud Storage playlist to YouTube Live.

- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A cloud environment capable of running an encoder that can read your video files, play them in the intended order, and transmit a continuous live feed.
- The source videos available to that encoder, along with enough network capacity for the chosen output settings.
- The stream URL and key for the YouTube event. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your event.
YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to create or schedule the event and connect an encoder. They do not prescribe a particular Google Cloud virtual machine, playlist scheduler, or command line, so choose and test an encoder deployment that fits your files and operating requirements.

Set up the prerecorded playlist as a YouTube Live event
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a live stream or schedule one. Scheduling gives you a watch page to share in advance.
- Get the ingest details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s output settings. For encrypted ingest, use YouTube’s RTMPS URL and key as described in its RTMPS setup instructions. Keep the key private.
- Make the encoder play the files continuously. Configure the encoder’s playlist or playback process to use the desired order and keep producing a live output. Check how it handles the end of the list, transitions, audio continuity, and a missing or unreadable file. Those behaviors depend on the encoder you choose; YouTube does not provide a Google Cloud playlist scheduler in its encoder setup guide.
- Match output to the source and connection. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for supported video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Use the bitrate range for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s table rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. Settings should suit the material and the encoder’s reliably available upload capacity.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start sending output early enough to verify the picture, sound, and stream health in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and then select Go live when ready.
- End the broadcast cleanly. Stop the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder output. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that applies to a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.
Test and monitor before relying on the broadcast
Run a representative test with the same source format, playlist behavior, encoder settings, and cloud network path you intend to use. Confirm that the encoder can read every file, maintain a stable feed, and deliver the expected audio and video. During the event, monitor YouTube’s stream health and preview; an encoder that is running does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy picture and sound.
Check the full playback cycle, including what happens when the final item ends. If the stream is intended to continue, verify that the playlist restarts or advances as planned rather than stopping at the end. Also test recovery from a temporary encoder or network interruption before scheduling a long broadcast.

When Google Cloud VOD services are the better fit
If you are building an on-demand video service rather than a YouTube Live channel, Google Cloud’s documented path is to upload source files to Cloud Storage, use Transcoder API to create HLS or MPEG-DASH outputs, and serve those outputs to a compatible player. Transcoded files are stored in Cloud Storage. Media CDN can deliver media from publicly accessible HTTP origins such as Cloud Storage.

Google’s media workload guidance recommends routing customer traffic reads through a CDN and says to choose VOD source regions with viewer concentration in mind. For livestream workloads, it notes that buckets may be colocated with transcoding resources.

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a different service: its documented inputs are live SRT or RTMP feeds, and it produces HLS or DASH outputs. Although its overview lists live-to-VOD among its features, Google’s file-based VOD overview points to Transcoder API for transcoding stored source files.

- YouTube receives no picture or sound: Confirm that the encoder is sending to the correct event’s URL and key, that it is actively outputting, and that the stream preview shows the expected sources.
- The event does not appear live: For a scheduled stream, check for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready.
- Playback stops at the end of the playlist: Check the encoder’s end-of-list behavior and configure or orchestrate repeat playback if continuous output is required.
- Stream health is poor or unstable: Check the encoder’s output settings against YouTube’s current codec and bitrate guidance, then assess whether the cloud workload’s available network capacity can sustain that output.
- RTMPS connection fails: Verify that the encoder is using the RTMPS URL and matching stream key from the same Live Control Room event. Recopy credentials if necessary, and do not expose the key in logs or shared configuration.
- Cloud Storage files are not appearing as a YouTube broadcast: Storage is not an encoder. Use a process that reads the files and sends a live feed to YouTube, or build a separate VOD experience with Transcoder API and a compatible player.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep prerecorded videos playing as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo is a purpose-built alternative to managing an encoder deployment. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
