You can run a prerecorded YouTube Live stream from a Linux VPS by making your media available on the server, sending a continuous encoder feed to YouTube’s ingest service with your stream key, and monitoring the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. The VPS can keep the encoder running without a home computer, but you must arrange the playlist, process supervision, and recovery yourself. YouTube’s official guidance supports encoder-based streaming; the example below is a starting point to adapt and test, not a configuration verified on a particular VPS.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- A Linux VPS with enough storage for your files and sustained outbound network capacity for the stream. If you plan to transcode on the server rather than send media as-is, include CPU capacity in your sizing decision.
- Video and audio files you have the necessary rights to stream, plus an encoder such as FFmpeg installed on the VPS.
- Access to YouTube Studio, where you create or schedule the broadcast and obtain its ingest details and stream key.
There is no single VPS size that fits every playlist: the required capacity depends on the media, output settings, whether you transcode, stream duration, and budget. Compare sustained outbound throughput, CPU if encoding, storage, network reliability, routing to YouTube ingest, and total cost. No particular India-region host or current provider price is established here, so check the provider’s current specifications before buying.
Understand the YouTube event and feed
YouTube treats the broadcast as the live event or video, and the stream as the audio-video feed sent to that event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the broadcast, then use the stream settings associated with it to get the ingestion URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Set up the VPS and playlist
1. Connect securely and prepare storage
Connect to the VPS using the access method provided by your host. Create a dedicated working directory for the media and playlist, restrict access to it, and upload the files you are authorized to use. Check available disk space against the total size of the playlist and leave room for logs and any temporary files your workflow creates.

2. Install and check an encoder
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your Linux distribution, or use the installation method recommended by its maintainers. Confirm that the executable is available by running ffmpeg -version. Package names and available codecs vary by distribution and build; check that your installed build supports the input formats and output method you intend to use.
3. Make a playlist manifest
For a simple loop, create a text file such as playlist.txt in the media directory. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer accepts entries in this form:

file '/srv/youtube-live/part-01.mp4'
file '/srv/youtube-live/part-02.mp4'
file '/srv/youtube-live/part-03.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the VPS. If filenames contain apostrophes or other unusual characters, use the escaping rules in FFmpeg’s current concat-demuxer documentation. The files need compatible streams and timing for straightforward concatenation; mismatches may cause playback errors or require preparing the media into a consistent format first. A playlist is not automatically a scheduling system: decide how it should repeat, what should happen at the end, and how you will update it before starting a long broadcast.
Configure YouTube ingest and send a test
Choose a protocol and copy the correct endpoint
RTMPS is a reasonable starting point for ordinary encoder output. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube ingest server and application path, and port 443. Copy the complete ingest address and stream key from the event’s settings; do not guess or reconstruct the endpoint. YouTube also lists HLS and DASH ingest, but these require protocol-specific playlist and segment packaging and are generally higher-latency options intended for more advanced codecs or high-resolution delivery. Use them only if your encoder workflow supports the required format.

Use a cautious FFmpeg starting point
The following illustrates the shape of a looped playlist feed. It is not a validated command for every FFmpeg build, media set, or YouTube event. Replace the endpoint and key with the exact values shown in YouTube Studio, keep the key out of public scripts and logs, and test the result privately or as an unlisted event before relying on it.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/youtube-live/playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv
"rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_APPLICATION/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This example asks FFmpeg to read the playlist in real time, loop it, encode video with x264 and audio with AAC, and send an FLV feed to an RTMPS destination. The actual endpoint format comes from YouTube Studio. The command does not set a resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, or audio layout; those depend on your source media, encoder build, network capacity, and the current YouTube encoder recommendations. Choose settings supported by the media and ingest guidance rather than copying arbitrary values. Transcoding consumes VPS CPU; if the files are already prepared in compatible formats, a remux or other workflow may reduce that load, but confirm compatibility and test the output first.

Preview before going public
- Start the encoder and open the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Wait for YouTube to receive the feed, then inspect the preview and verify both picture and sound.
- Check that the playlist advances and loops as intended, and watch for encoder errors, dropped connections, or resource pressure on the VPS.
- Only proceed with the intended audience after the test behaves correctly. YouTube recommends setting up in advance and continuously monitoring audio and video during a stream.
Keep the stream running and stop it cleanly
A process started in an interactive SSH session may stop when the session ends, depending on how it was launched. For a sustained broadcast, use a Linux process supervisor such as systemd or another method you understand, configure it to start the encoder when appropriate, and review its logs. The exact service unit and restart policy depend on your distribution and the behavior you want; this workflow has not been verified against a specific VPS or service configuration.
Do not assume that restarting FFmpeg alone handles every YouTube event state. YouTube’s settings determine how the stream and broadcast start and stop. After ending the encoder, confirm in Live Control Room that the event has stopped as intended and review the archive if archiving is enabled. Test the full start, interruption, restart, and stop sequence before using it for a scheduled public broadcast.

Rights, copyright, and monetization
You are responsible for having the rights needed to use the material on Google services, including the relevant music rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms require compliance with Community Guidelines and say the content provider represents that it has the necessary rights for the live content. A file being available online, purchased, or attributed to its creator does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match may cause a replacement image, an interruption, or termination of the stream. If you have permission to use licensed material, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; permission alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. Under YouTube’s reused-content policy, a channel may be ineligible for monetization when it republishes material with little or no significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value—even if the rights holder has granted permission. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your specific material and channel.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Wrong ingest address or key, a protocol mismatch, or outbound traffic blocked | Copy the current endpoint and key from the event settings; verify RTMPS and port 443 are supported by the VPS network and encoder. |
| The encoder connects but the preview is blank or silent | Unsupported or incompatible media streams, missing audio, or an encoding problem | Inspect the source files and FFmpeg output, then test a short clip and confirm both picture and sound in Live Control Room. |
| The playlist stops instead of repeating | Loop behavior or playlist parsing differs from the intended setup | Check the concat manifest paths and the FFmpeg build’s loop behavior; observe a test through the end of the list before scheduling a long stream. |
| The VPS becomes overloaded or the feed stutters | On-server transcoding exceeds CPU capacity, or outbound network performance is inadequate | Monitor CPU, memory, disk, and network use; reduce encoding workload or select capacity based on the actual output and workload. |
| The stream is interrupted after starting normally | YouTube may have detected a third-party match, or the VPS/network/encoder connection may have failed | Check Live Control Room and encoder logs to distinguish a platform interruption from a host or connection failure; confirm content rights and any Content ID allowlisting. |
| FFmpeg cannot read a playlist entry | Incorrect path, permissions, or manifest quoting | Confirm the file exists at the listed path, the service account can read it, and the entry is correctly escaped. |
