You can use a Raspberry Pi as the host for an encoder that sends podcast audio and a visual to YouTube Live. The core setup is to prepare an ordered playlist, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and private stream key in encoder software, then test playback and stream health. The exact Raspberry Pi model, encoder configuration, and playlist automation need to be validated on your own hardware; the steps below distinguish YouTube’s documented requirements from implementation choices.
Before you set up the Pi: confirm rights and plan the playlist
Make sure you have permission to rebroadcast every episode and use its cover art or other visuals in a public livestream and any archived video. Access to an episode through an RSS feed does not itself grant rebroadcast rights. YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content; matches may interrupt or terminate a stream. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent interruption.

Decide how the encoder will receive the episodes. These are two possible approaches, not verified Raspberry Pi implementations:

|---|---|---|
| Local episode files | Store authorized audio files on the Pi or attached storage, then provide the encoder with an ordered list. | Local copies can avoid relying on a network download during playback, but require enough storage. Confirm copying is permitted, set the intended order and repeat behavior, and decide how you will replace removed or updated episodes. |
| Retrieval from a rights-cleared RSS feed | Use a separate playlist-generation process to retrieve episodes the publisher permits you to rebroadcast. | Check whether enclosure URLs can be downloaded, whether playback waits for a full download, what happens when an episode is removed or replaced, and how the process prevents unintended repeats. Network loss can affect retrieval or playback. |
The available YouTube documentation does not provide an RSS playlist broadcaster or a validated Raspberry Pi RSS script. Treat playlist automation as your own implementation: test ordering, transitions, repeat behavior, and recovery before relying on it live.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete activation before the day you need to broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in shared screenshots, or put it in a public script.
- Use the RTMPS server address supplied by Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL; do not assume an ordinary RTMP address is encrypted.
- Start the encoder and check that the incoming stream appears in YouTube’s preview. If the stream is scheduled, go live from Live Control Room when ready.
HLS is an alternative ingest method, not a required part of this basic workflow. YouTube’s HLS setup requirements include 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP, so use it only if your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS preset and your workflow needs it.
Choose encoder settings the Pi can actually sustain
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For advanced stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Pi model or software encoder can handle a chosen resolution and bitrate.

- Choose a video codec, resolution, and bitrate supported by your specific Pi, encoder software, and upload connection. A static cover image may require little visual complexity, but the encoder must still produce a valid video stream.
- Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes those options; keep the interval at or below four seconds.
- For stereo audio, use YouTube’s recommended 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps setting when supported by the encoder and source.
- Keep upload capacity above the outgoing stream rate. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload bandwidth; assess the connection you will actually use, not just its advertised maximum.
Before buying hardware, verify that the Pi model and software you plan to use support the required encoding path. Raspberry Pi 5 is one possible candidate, but the available documentation does not establish that it is required or validated for this workload.

Run a representative test before broadcasting
Use a private or unlisted test stream and the same audio playback and visual behavior intended for the real broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and streaming tips, then check each item:

- Confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status.
- Listen for silence, clipping, abrupt level changes, and gaps between episodes.
- Check audio/video synchronization and verify that the visual remains present through playlist transitions.
- Test the playlist’s ordering, repeat behavior, and what happens when an episode is missing or unavailable.
- Confirm the Pi remains awake and the connection can sustain the selected outgoing bitrate with the recommended upload headroom.
Keep the stream running and recover cleanly
For an unattended setup, use a stable wired connection where practical and configure the Pi not to sleep or shut down on a schedule. Make sure the playlist and encoder can recover sensibly after a network interruption; the details depend on the Pi, software, and playlist method, so verify them with a deliberate test rather than assuming automatic recovery.
Monitor Live Control Room during operation. If the stream stops or is interrupted, inspect stream health and any copyright or Community Guidelines notices before restarting. Continued third-party content matches or a strike can end a live stream. When finished, stop the encoder and end the stream in YouTube. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours.
