Use OBS Studio on your Mac mini to send a podcast playlist to YouTube Live. For one episode, add an OBS Media Source; for multiple local episode files, use OBS’s VLC Video source, which supports ordered playlists and looping. Connect OBS to an encoder stream created in YouTube Studio, test playback and audio, then start the broadcast. VLC must be installed to use the VLC Video source.
What you need before you start
- A Mac mini with OBS Studio installed. The exact Mac mini generation, macOS version, OBS version, and resulting encoding performance are not specified here; check that your installed OBS and VLC versions support your macOS.
- Podcast episode files that the Mac mini can access. OBS documents common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM.
- VLC installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source for a multi-file playlist.
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream, plus permission to broadcast every episode and any included music, clips, or other third-party material.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream profile and other traffic on the connection.
This workflow is for local or otherwise accessible media files. It does not establish that arbitrary podcast-feed URLs can be used directly as a dependable OBS playlist. Prepare local files and verify playback and file transitions before the event.
Prepare the episode playlist
- Gather the episode files and put them in the intended order. Check that each file opens and plays through on the Mac mini.
- Confirm that you have the rights to livestream each episode, including its intro, outro, music bed, clips, and any other third-party material.
- Decide whether the playlist should end after one pass or repeat. For a fixed sequence, do not enable shuffle.
Build an OBS scene for the podcast
For one episode
- Open OBS and select or create the scene you want to use.
- In the Sources panel, choose + > Media Source, give the source a name, and select the local episode file.
- If the episode is audio-only, add a still image, show artwork, or another appropriate visual source so the YouTube stream has a picture. Check the audio meter while the file plays.
- Use Media Source’s file-looping option only if you want that single episode to repeat.
For multiple episode files
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires it for the VLC Video source.
- In the Sources panel, select + > VLC Video.
- Add the episode files to the playlist in the desired order, then confirm the list matches the sequence you want viewers to hear.
- Set Loop Playlist according to whether the broadcast should repeat the playlist. Leave shuffle off for a fixed order.
- Add artwork or another visual source if appropriate, then play through enough of the playlist to verify that sound is present and that the next file starts correctly.
Before the event, decide what should happen if you switch away from the scene: check the source’s playback behavior so it does not unexpectedly restart or stop when you change scenes.
Create the YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If useful, schedule the event in Live Control Room.
- Open the event’s encoder settings in YouTube Studio and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key as required by the available connection fields. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube uses it as the encoder credential that directs the feed to the right destination and allows YouTube to accept it.
Do not share screenshots or recordings that reveal the key. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose video, audio, and bandwidth settings
For a standard SDR stream, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate row that matches your resolution and frame rate.
| Profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | Stereo audio guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 128 Kbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 128 Kbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection will sustain the stream. Match OBS’s output profile to your stable upload capacity; if bandwidth is limited or shared, choose a lower resolution or bitrate rather than relying on a speed-test peak.

- Use CBR for the video encoder.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio and 128 Kbps stereo as YouTube’s listed audio recommendation.
- Leave at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the selected stream bitrate, and account for other devices or applications using the connection.
Test the full setup, then go live
- Allow time for preparation: YouTube recommends setting up at least 2 hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not eligibility rules.
- Run a test with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. For a podcast playlist, confirm the artwork appears, audio is clear, and files advance or repeat as intended.
- Start streaming from OBS and check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before making the stream public or starting the scheduled event.
- During the broadcast, keep monitoring audio and video quality and watch for warnings or interruptions in Live Control Room.
- When the event is over, stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Copyright and livestream interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If its systems detect a match, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Having a licence does not necessarily prevent this automated response: the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve that with the owner before relying on licensed material in a live broadcast.
Check rights for every episode and for all music, intros, outros, and clips. If you cannot confirm that the material is cleared for a livestream, do not include it.

Troubleshooting common problems
The VLC Video source is missing or will not play
VLC is required for OBS’s VLC Video source. Install a VLC version compatible with your macOS and OBS installation, then reopen OBS and check the source again. If compatibility remains uncertain, use Media Source for a single supported local file instead.
The playlist starts in the wrong order, stops, or repeats unexpectedly
Recheck the file order in the VLC Video playlist, the Loop Playlist setting, and whether shuffle is enabled. Play through the transition between files before going live. For a one-file source, check Media Source’s looping behavior.

YouTube does not show the encoder preview
Verify that OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube event and that the stream URL and key were copied correctly. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. Check OBS’s connection status and YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or looks unstable
Compare your selected bitrate with stable upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and account for other traffic sharing the connection. Lower the output resolution or bitrate if necessary, then repeat a test before the event.

Audio is missing or a live stream is interrupted
Confirm the source is not muted in OBS, watch the audio meter during playback, and test the actual episode files. If YouTube flags third-party content, review the affected material and resolve rights or Content ID allowlisting with the owner; do not assume that a licence alone prevents automated interruption.
