Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To switch podcast episodes during a YouTube live stream, put each episode in its own OBS scene and assign a hotkey to each scene, or load the files into an OBS VLC Video playlist for sequential playback. Use Studio Mode if you want to preview a scene change before viewers see it. The episode switching happens in OBS; YouTube receives the resulting stream.
Choose how you want episodes to change
| Method | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Separate scenes with hotkeys | Choosing exactly when each episode starts | Requires a scene and key assignment for each episode. |
| VLC Video playlist | Playing several files in a set sequence | Requires VLC and attention to playlist order and loop settings. |
| Studio Mode | Previewing a change before it goes live | Adds a preview-and-transition step. |
| Native Media Source | Playing one local episode file in a scene | Handles one media source rather than the documented playlist workflow. |
OBS scenes combine the sources in a visible layout, so a scene can contain an episode file along with artwork, a title, or other show elements. You do not need to buy a microphone, capture card, controller, or other physical accessory just to switch between recorded episodes.
Set up manual episode switching with scenes
- Create a scene for each episode. In OBS, create a scene for every episode, or for each episode-specific layout you plan to use. Give scenes clear names so you can identify them during the broadcast.
- Add the episode file. For a single local recording, add a Media Source to the appropriate scene and select the file. OBS lists common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check compatibility in your installed OBS version.
- Assign scene hotkeys. Open Settings → Hotkeys and assign an unused key to each scene’s scene-switch action. OBS supports hotkeys for switching to a specific scene; the exact action label may vary by version. Avoid keys that conflict with other applications or controls.
- Switch during the stream. Press the assigned key for the next episode’s scene when you are ready to change what viewers see.
Preview changes with Studio Mode
Studio Mode separates the scene currently live from the scene you are preparing. OBS describes it as a way to change scenes in the background without viewers seeing the changes. Select the next scene in the edit/preview area, check its layout, then use Transition or a configured Quick Transition to put it live. This is useful when an episode scene includes artwork or other elements you want to check before the switch.
Play episodes sequentially with a VLC Video playlist
- Install VLC if needed. Add a VLC Video source in OBS and populate its playlist with episode files in the intended order. If the source is unavailable, install VLC. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Set the playlist behavior. Turn Shuffle Playlist off to preserve the listed order. Choose whether Loop Playlist should be on; OBS documents it as on by default.
- Check visibility and playback behavior. OBS documents the VLC source defaults as stopping when not visible and restarting when visible. Verify how your playlist behaves when its scene is hidden or shown, and decide whether it should stop at the end or loop.
- Rehearse the full sequence. Confirm the order, audio routing, scene changes, and playlist end behavior before relying on it during a live broadcast.
Configure a single episode’s Media Source
For a single local episode, OBS’s native Media Source offers playback controls including restarting playback when the source becomes active and hiding it after playback ends. Set those behaviors deliberately: restarting on activation can replay an episode after a scene change, while hiding it at the end can leave the scene without the video source visible. Test the behavior with your actual scenes and files.

Test the stream before going live
- Check that every episode file opens and that the intended scene or playlist is selected.
- Test each hotkey and confirm it switches to the correct scene.
- If using Studio Mode, verify that the preview scene changes only after you trigger a transition.
- Listen to the stream’s audio routing during playback and scene changes.
- Run through the playlist order and confirm the intended loop or end behavior.
- Make sure you have rights and permissions to rebroadcast every recorded episode. OBS’s setup guides do not determine whether particular content is cleared for use.
YouTube lists OBS among its verified encoder software options and says encoder streaming supports advanced productions. The platform receives the output from OBS; episode selection and scene switching are managed in OBS. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guide.
