To stream a podcast recording with a still visual, create a YouTube Live event, add an image and the podcast audio as sources in OBS, connect OBS with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then check the preview and audio before you go live. You can leave the audio source’s Loop option off for a single episode or turn it on to replay the recording. This guide covers the setup, monitoring, rights, and archive limits.
Before you start
- YouTube Live access: Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before broadcast day. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- OBS: You need an installed encoder and the podcast audio file. OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes streaming without a charge. OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Rights: Confirm permission for the recording and all material in it, including music, clips, guest contributions, and visuals.
- Stable upload and backup: Leave upload-bandwidth headroom; YouTube recommends 20%. Plan to monitor the event and make a local recording if you need a dependable archive copy. YouTube streaming tips and YouTube archive guidance.
Set up the podcast stream in OBS
1. Create the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into your encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send video to your event. Do not share or publish it. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the connection.
2. Add the still image and podcast audio
- In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast. Add an Image source and select the background image. Fit it to the canvas; keep it behind any optional title or branding sources.
- Add a Media Source and select the podcast file. OBS supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. If the source appears as video with a blank frame, the still image should remain the visible background while the file supplies the audio.
- Open the Media Source properties and decide whether to enable Loop. Enable it only if you want playback to restart automatically at the end; leave it off for a one-time episode. OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Speak or play a short section and watch the OBS audio meter. Adjust the source or mixer level if it is silent, clipped, or too quiet. Make a brief test recording or private test stream to check the complete output.
YouTube and OBS do not prescribe a special still-image dimension for this podcast setup. Use an image that fits your chosen OBS canvas, then inspect the YouTube preview for cropping, bars, or unwanted overlays before going live.

3. Connect OBS and verify the preview
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and enter or connect the server URL and stream key from the event. Labels can vary by OBS version and connection method.
- Start streaming from OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and confirm that the image appears and the podcast audio is audible.
- Only after checking the preview, audio, and stream health should you click Go Live in YouTube Studio. OBS and YouTube’s guides recommend checking the output rather than assuming a successful encoder connection means the event is ready for viewers.
Monitor the broadcast and preserve a copy
- Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and the OBS audio meters throughout the event. Verify the event is visible to viewers using the intended privacy setting.
- Watch the local recording indicator and confirm the file is growing if you are recording a backup. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup. YouTube’s archive live streams page.
- After the episode, stop the event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS. YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour guidance is from YouTube Help, which does not state a publication year, and is not a guarantee that an archive will be available.
Rights and YouTube policy risks
Having a podcast file does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast every element in it. YouTube’s livestream terms require the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Live streams are scanned for third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. An archived broadcast can also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. A license may not prevent a live interruption if the relevant rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and YouTube’s copyright guidance before rebroadcasting material you do not wholly control.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Incorrect event server URL or stream key, or the stream has not been started in OBS. | Recheck the event details in Live Control Room and OBS’s Stream settings. Treat the key as private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS. |
| Preview shows an image but no podcast sound | The media file may not be playing, the source may be muted, or the mixer level may be too low. | Check Media Source playback and the OBS audio meter, unmute the source if needed, and run another short test. |
| Audio plays but the visual is missing or cropped | The image source may be hidden, layered incorrectly, or not fitted to the canvas. | Confirm the Image source is visible and behind optional overlays, then fit it to the canvas and recheck the YouTube preview. |
| The episode starts again unexpectedly | Loop is enabled on the Media Source. | Turn off Loop for a one-time episode; keep it on only when repeated playback is intended. |
| The stream drops or quality degrades | The upload connection may be unstable or lack headroom. | Check YouTube stream health, reduce competing upload traffic, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. |
| The stream is interrupted or the archive receives a claim | Third-party material may have matched YouTube’s copyright systems. | Review rights for each song, clip, contribution, and visual. Resolve the underlying rights issue rather than assuming that a live interruption will be avoided by having a license. |
| No automatic archive appears | The stream may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archival threshold, or automatic archiving may otherwise not have produced a copy. | Check the event and account’s available recordings. For future broadcasts, keep a local recording; YouTube does not guarantee automatic archiving. |
