How to Stream a Playlist to YouTube Live from a Linux VPS with Docker

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can stream a playlist from a Linux VPS by running an encoder inside a Docker container and sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS. YouTube documents the ingest settings and encoder requirements, but it does not prescribe a Docker image, playlist format, or FFmpeg command. Choose and verify those implementation details for your environment rather than treating an unverified command as production-ready.

How the setup works

Your media files are made available to an encoder process running in a container. The encoder reads the playlist, produces a continuous audio/video stream, and sends it to the RTMPS ingest endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Docker packages and runs the encoder; it does not itself create or schedule the playlist.

This guide covers the YouTube-side configuration and the decisions you need to validate for the container and encoder. The official YouTube guidance does not establish a particular Docker image, mount layout, FFmpeg playlist syntax, playlist order, loop behavior, VPS minimum specification, or restart policy, so no single command can be presented here as a verified solution.

Prepare the YouTube live stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and open Stream settings.
  2. Copy the RTMPS URL. Use the lock icon beside Stream URL to reveal the connection details, and choose the RTMPS URL rather than the ordinary RTMP URL if both are available.
  3. Copy the stream key. Treat it as a password. Do not put a real key in a public Dockerfile, source repository, screenshot, or unprotected log. A placeholder such as <STREAM_KEY> is safe for documentation examples; use a protected runtime configuration or secret mechanism in your deployment.
  4. Keep both values aligned. Configure the encoder with the URL and key for the same YouTube stream. A valid RTMPS connection requires the proper ingestion endpoint and application path, port 443, TLS, and hostname/SNI handling for server authentication.

YouTube’s RTMPS documentation calls RTMPS a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially when low latency is needed. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions and Google’s RTMPS ingestion requirements.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the encoder output settings

Set the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate first, then choose the matching codec and bitrate. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. For a conventional SDR stream, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 color space.

Output example Codec YouTube-recommended video bitrate YouTube-listed minimum
1080p30 H.264 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p30 AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 H.264 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p30 AV1 or H.265/HEVC 6 Mbps 2 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations and minimums, not guarantees that a particular VPS or encoder can sustain the output. The figures are video bitrates; allow additional network capacity for audio and overhead. For other resolutions and frame rates, use the appropriate row in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 is supported. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its documented 5.1 option is AAC-only at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
  • Resolution detection: YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. Manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled.

Use a codec that both your chosen encoder and YouTube ingest configuration support. A higher resolution or frame rate requires an appropriate bitrate and enough VPS CPU, encoder capability, and outbound bandwidth; the cited YouTube settings do not specify VPS resource minimums.

Build and validate the Docker playlist workflow

The general workflow is to select an encoder image, make the media files available inside the container, configure the playlist and output, and launch the container so the encoder connects to YouTube. The details depend on the image and encoder version: verify their current documentation for mount paths, playlist syntax, looping behavior, signal handling, environment variables, and restart behavior. Do not assume that a playlist automatically loops cleanly or that a container restart resumes at the intended item.

  1. Choose the image and encoder. Confirm that the image is maintained for your target platform and that the encoder supports the selected codec, RTMPS, TLS, and SNI behavior. Check its documentation for the exact command and configuration format.
  2. Stage the media and playlist. Make files readable to the container and confirm paths resolve from inside it. Check that every playlist entry exists and that video and audio durations are compatible with the intended sequence.
  3. Configure output and credentials. Apply the YouTube bitrate, keyframe, audio, resolution, and frame-rate settings selected above. Supply the stream URL and key through a protected runtime mechanism, not a committed file or public log.
  4. Test before relying on it. Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream. Verify playlist order, transitions at file boundaries, audio continuity, stream health, and what happens when the encoder or container exits and restarts.
  5. Check ongoing operation. Confirm that the VPS has enough storage for the media and sufficient outbound transfer capacity for the chosen bitrate and streaming duration. Monitor the container and YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming Docker’s running state means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Check YouTube stream health and troubleshoot

YouTube Live Control Room reports stream status, and the LiveStreams resource exposes health status and configuration issues. Use those diagnostics alongside encoder and container logs. Google’s LiveStreams documentation identifies issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and absent audio.

Symptom What to check Likely corrective action
YouTube does not receive the stream Whether the selected URL is RTMPS; endpoint and application path; port 443; encoder TLS and SNI support; whether the key matches the selected stream Copy the RTMPS URL and key again from that stream’s settings, then correct endpoint, port, or encoder connection configuration.
Low-bitrate warning or unstable quality Encoder’s configured bitrate, VPS outbound capacity, and whether the bitrate matches codec, resolution, and frame rate Use the relevant YouTube bitrate row; reduce output resolution or frame rate if the VPS/network cannot sustain the selected setting.
Frame-rate or configuration warning Actual encoder output versus the configured or detected frame rate, and keyframe interval Align the output frame rate and keep keyframes at the recommended 2-second interval, never above 4 seconds.
No audio or audio errors Whether playlist files contain audio, the encoder’s audio mapping, codec, sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate Ensure audio is present and encoded in a supported format with settings appropriate to stereo or 5.1 output.
Playlist stops or restarts unexpectedly Encoder logs, file availability and permissions, playlist end behavior, and container exit/restart policy Validate the selected image’s playlist and restart semantics with the actual media; configure recovery only after confirming how it handles reconnects and playlist position.

Protocol choice: when RTMPS is the fit

For a typical SDR playlist stream, RTMPS is the straightforward choice in YouTube’s ordinary ingest workflow. YouTube separately documents HLS for other ingestion needs, including HDR workflows; HLS uses segmented delivery, and YouTube notes higher latency than RTMP-based ingest. It is not necessary to add HLS to a basic RTMPS playlist setup.
