The right provider depends on whether you are relaying already-encoded video with FFmpeg or producing a scene-based show in OBS, plus the server’s sustained compute capacity, monthly outbound traffic, network route, recovery controls, and total cost. Compare current provider plans against those requirements before committing; YouTube’s published ingest settings alone cannot tell you which VPS will sustain your workload.
Choose the workload before choosing a VPS
A server that loops prepared files is not necessarily doing the same work as a desktop production that composites scenes and encodes video in real time. That difference affects CPU demand and plan sizing.

| Workflow | What the server does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg loop of prepared files | Plays and sends a playlist of already-encoded media. A specialist guide describes this as a lean command-line workflow, but it is not a universal sizing benchmark. | Whether your files can be sent without transcoding; supported codecs and output profile; continuous network throughput; restart and monitoring options. |
| OBS production | Runs a graphical production interface and may composite scenes, overlays, and other sources. The same specialist guide describes this as more resource-intensive than a simple prepared-file loop. | CPU capacity for the chosen encoding settings, memory and graphical requirements, stable remote access, and whether the VPS can sustain the actual production profile. |
Do not assume that a plan able to relay a prepared file can also software-encode it. Test the exact media, codec, resolution, frame rate, encoding mode, and number of simultaneous streams you intend to run.
What to compare across VPS providers
Compare provider plans on the workload, not on a marketing label such as “streaming VPS.” No current provider-plan evidence establishes a neutral overall winner for this use case, so check the live plan terms directly before choosing.
#1 Best Overall
- Sustained CPU capacity: Important if the server must encode or composite video. Shared CPU specifications do not prove that a plan can sustain your target profile.
- Outbound traffic allowance and overages: Find the monthly transfer allowance, any caps, overage charges, and port-speed terms. Continuous video can consume substantial egress.
- Region and network path: Choose a region with a reliable route to YouTube ingest and practical administration access. A provider’s uptime claim is not a guarantee that your stream will never interrupt.
- Recovery and access: Check whether the plan offers automatic restart, monitoring, console access, backups, and support that fit your recovery process.
- Total cost: Include the VPS plan, traffic overages, storage, backups, and any extra services you need. Compare like-for-like workload and billing periods.
Estimate bandwidth and monthly transfer
YouTube recommends a total bitrate no greater than the available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Its guidance is written for the encoder’s upload connection; for a VPS, also confirm the provider’s outbound capacity and traffic policy. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
For a rough transfer estimate, multiply the continuous video bitrate by time. At 10 Mbps, a stream sends about 4.5 GB per hour in decimal units, or about 3.24 TB over a 30-day month, before protocol overhead. At 17 Mbps, the corresponding rough figures are 7.65 GB per hour and 5.51 TB per 30 days. These are arithmetic estimates, not provider plan allowances; allow additional room for overhead, reconnects, and any other outbound traffic.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; for 2160p/4K at 30 fps it lists 42 Mbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not promises that a VPS can encode or transmit those settings. Consult the official encoder settings for the full table for your selected codec and frame rate.
Set up the YouTube side safely
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Create or configure the live stream. In YouTube Studio, create the stream and use its server URL and stream key in your encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential. Do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, logs, or a public repository; restrict access to the VPS account and configuration that contains it.
- Match the encoder to the target output. Use YouTube’s settings for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Do not treat one bitrate as universal across output profiles.
- Preview and test before relying on the stream. Run a test broadcast, check stream health in YouTube Studio, and monitor the VPS process and outbound connection before treating it as production-ready.
- Plan recovery and archival separately. A process restart can restore a feed after a failure, but it does not guarantee that YouTube captured the missing portion or that a continuous archive exists.
Account for YouTube’s archive and rights rules
Streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns that “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 24/7 broadcast therefore needs a separate recording or archive plan if preserving the full program matters. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Prerecorded does not mean rights-cleared
Video sent as a live broadcast still has to comply with YouTube policies. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to the visuals, audio, and other material, including applicable music rights. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and policies.
Consider a managed cloud playout service if you do not need server control
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded prerecorded video playing on YouTube, a managed cloud playout service can remove VPS administration. Compare services for stream count, media storage, scheduling, recovery controls, supported platform, retention or export, and account security; verify each vendor’s current feature and price claims before relying on them.

- StreamNeo — an always-on YouTube stream from the cloud, for uploaded videos at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free. It avoids keeping a home computer running. See StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

- The VPS plan looks inexpensive, but the stream is unstable: Check whether the workload is encoding rather than relaying, whether CPU capacity is sustained, and whether the output bitrate fits the server’s actual outbound capacity.
- The provider’s monthly traffic figure seems sufficient: Recalculate from the continuous bitrate for the full billing period, then account for overhead, backup feeds, and overage rules. Confirm whether the provider limits port speed separately.
- The stream disconnects and does not resume: Verify the encoder process, restart behavior, monitoring, console access, and YouTube connection details. Test recovery before relying on it; do not equate a VPS uptime statement with an uninterrupted broadcast guarantee.
- YouTube shows poor stream health: Check the selected codec and profile against YouTube’s settings, confirm CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval where applicable, and ensure bandwidth headroom.
- The full 24/7 program is missing from the archive: YouTube cautions that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Maintain an independent recording if the complete archive is important.
- A stream key may have been exposed: Replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration, then restrict access to the new key.
Make the decision
Choose a self-managed VPS when you need server-level control or a production workflow the managed options do not provide, and only after checking sustained compute, egress terms, network route, and recovery tools against a real test. If you only need uploaded prerecorded videos to loop on YouTube, compare managed cloud playout instead of assuming a VPS is necessary.
