YouTube’s Live Control Room supplies the ingest URL and stream key. This works only when the file’s existing audio and video streams can be carried by the selected output format and meet YouTube’s current ingest requirements; stream copying does not convert an incompatible file.
What “without re-encoding” means
FFmpeg streamcopy passes compressed audio and video packets through without decoding and encoding them again. It can still remux those packets into a different container, but it cannot apply filters to copied streams or make their codecs, resolution, or timing compatible with a destination. FFmpeg documents these limitations in its documentation.

Use streamcopy when the source is already suitable for YouTube’s ingest path and you do not need to resize, filter, or otherwise alter it. If the source is incompatible, transcoding may be necessary, but that is a different workflow and does not meet the no-re-encoding requirement.
Prepare the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you plan to use. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the stream workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the values displayed in your own Live Control Room; the URL and key can vary, so do not rely on a copied credential-bearing example.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it. YouTube explains stream-key controls in Manage live stream settings; reset the key if it is exposed.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest. Its current encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum; and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube also publishes bitrate ranges by resolution and codec. Check that live table for the settings applicable to your stream rather than assuming a file is compliant just because FFmpeg can read it.

Run FFmpeg with streamcopy
For an eligible file with a video stream and optional audio, the command pattern is:
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f flv "rtmps://<YouTube-ingest-server>/<stream-key>"
Replace the output URL with the actual server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The command is a general pattern, not a tested command for every file or account. The selected FLV output muxer and RTMPS destination must be compatible with the source streams and the ingest path.

-rereads the input at its native rate instead of sending a file’s packets as fast as the machine can process them. FFmpeg describes real-time read-rate limiting in its documentation.-i "input.mp4"identifies the local input file. Quote the path, especially if it contains spaces.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream if one exists. The trailing?makes that mapping optional, so a video-only file is not rejected solely for lacking audio.-c copystream-copies the selected streams rather than encoding them.-f flvselects the FLV output muxer used in this command pattern. It does not convert the encoded video or audio.
If you need a different audio or video stream, change the mapping deliberately; a file may contain multiple tracks. FFmpeg’s documentation covers stream selection, mapping, and streamcopy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart, check, and stop the broadcast
- Run the command and watch FFmpeg’s output for errors. Keep the terminal session running while the file is being sent.
- Wait for the incoming feed or preview in Live Control Room. Check that both video and audio are present and that YouTube reports a healthy stream.
- Before making the stream public, use the preview to verify the correct file, audio, and stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring encoder streams in its streaming and encoder guidance.
- When finished, stop the broadcast using the applicable Live Control Room controls and stop FFmpeg. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm the current behavior in YouTube Help because platform policies can change.
When streamcopy fails
An error writing the output header, an unsupported codec message, or a missing stream usually means the selected streams cannot be muxed to the chosen output or do not suit the ingest path. The -c copy option does not change a codec or repair incompatible stream properties. Check the file’s streams and compare their codecs and settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance before changing the command.

| What you need | Streamcopy | Transcoding |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve the existing encoded audio and video | Yes, when the streams and output muxer are compatible | No; it encodes new output |
| Resize, filter, or convert an incompatible stream | No; filters cannot be applied to copied streams | Can address these needs, but falls outside “without re-encoding” |
| Encoding work on the sending computer | Avoids decoding/encoding the selected streams | Requires decoding and encoding |
| Compatibility with YouTube ingest | Depends on the source streams and muxing | Can be configured for compatibility, but settings still need checking against YouTube’s current guidance |
If compatibility requires re-encoding, treat that as a separate fallback: it can change codec, dimensions, or timing, but it no longer preserves the source streams as-is. Do not expect adding -c copy to solve an unsupported-format error.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights to the video and audio in the file and that the planned use follows YouTube’s policies. A file that streams successfully is not thereby cleared for copyright or policy purposes. Review YouTube’s current rules for the content and format of your broadcast; do not assume that owning a copy of a recording automatically grants live-streaming rights.
