To stream a browser game to YouTube with OBS, capture the browser window, check that the game and any commentary audio appear in OBS, then send the feed to YouTube using its stream URL and key. Preview it in YouTube Live Control Room before going live. Window Capture is a sensible first choice, but capture behavior varies by browser, game, and operating system.
1. Prepare OBS and the browser game
- Open OBS Studio and run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Follow the prompts for streaming; OBS uses your intended use, hardware, and network conditions to suggest settings. Treat its result as a starting point rather than a guarantee that your connection can sustain a particular stream quality.
- Open the game in your browser and leave its window visible. In OBS, create a scene for the stream so you can configure the game view and any optional webcam together.
2. Capture the browser window
In the scene’s Sources panel, add Window Capture and select the browser window containing the game. OBS documents Window Capture for non-game windows; its Quick Start guide lists it for Windows and Linux, and macOS Screen Capture for macOS. For a browser game, Window Capture is a practical first option, not a compatibility guarantee.

With the source selected, use Edit → Transform → Fit to Screen so it fills the OBS canvas. Check the preview: make sure the game is visible, framed as intended, and not obscured. If you add a webcam, position it away from important game details.
If the game does not appear
Try an OS-appropriate screen or display capture source if Window Capture is blank or unsuitable. Screen capture can also show content outside the browser, so inspect the preview for private windows, notifications, or other desktop material before streaming. OBS documents Game Capture for supported DirectX or OpenGL games on Windows; it is not the default recommendation for a browser game.

OBS’s source guidance describes general capture categories, not a compatibility list for every browser and game. If one method fails, test another and verify the preview before continuing.
3. Check game audio and commentary
While the game is making sound, watch the Audio Mixer meters in OBS. If you plan to speak, check the microphone meter as well. OBS’s Quick Start workflow captures desktop audio and a microphone by default, but devices and settings can differ. If a meter does not move or the wrong input is active, open Settings → Audio and select the appropriate desktop/game audio and microphone devices.

Adjust the levels so game sound does not drown out spoken commentary. A separate microphone is optional: you only need one if you want to narrate or speak to viewers. Confirm that the intended audio is reaching OBS before sending the stream to YouTube.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and select or create the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup. In OBS’s stream settings, enter both values. YouTube’s instructions explain how to configure an encoder at Connect your broadcast software to YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private. It authorizes an encoder to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room before broadcasting.
5. Choose output settings your setup can sustain
Set the output resolution, frame rate, video codec, and bitrate in OBS with YouTube’s current encoder guidance in mind. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options; its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 SDR recommendations, not measured results or a promise that a particular computer or upload connection can sustain them.

| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate | Stated minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These values are from Google / YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, accessed 2026-10-07. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Its table gives different bitrate values for H.265 and AV1, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs.
Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and testing with movement and audio similar to the actual stream. Start with a simpler SDR setup unless you have a specific reason to configure HDR or HLS. Review YouTube’s encoder page again when setting up a future stream, since guidance can change.

6. Preview, go live, and monitor the stream
- Start the encoder feed from OBS and wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check that the picture is clear and the game, desktop audio, and microphone (if used) are correct. Fix any capture or audio problem before going live.
- For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room once the preview is ready. Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast.
Choose latency for the kind of stream you want
YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can make viewer interaction more immediate, but may increase buffering. Choose a latency setting based on whether real-time chat matters to your stream, rather than assuming the lowest setting is always best. See Live streaming latency.
