Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn OBS Studio, add a VLC Video source with your clips in order, then set Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. Use 720p source files where possible and do not set the output to 1080p or 4K. Configure YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, connect the event’s server URL and stream key, and test the playlist before going live.
This keeps OBS’s configured stream output at 720p; it does not control every viewer’s playback quality. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple formats for different devices and network conditions.

1. Prepare the playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video source appears only when VLC is installed, and the VLC and OBS architectures must match—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene. Add the video files in the order you want them played. OBS’s VLC source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM.
- Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final file. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if the fixed order matters. If the source may become hidden when you change scenes, check its behavior when hidden so it does not unexpectedly pause or stop.
- Preview the playlist and confirm that each clip advances as expected. Include audio and transitions in the test, not just a single video file.
2. Set the OBS output to 720p
- Open Settings → Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This is the stream and recording output size. For a straightforward setup with 720p assets, set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 1280×720 as well.
- Choose a common frame rate that matches the material, usually 30 or 60 frames per second. Check the preview for smooth motion.
Use 16:9 clips when available. For clips with other aspect ratios or dimensions, fit or contain the image so its proportions remain intact; this can leave bars. Avoid stretching a clip just to fill the frame, because that distorts the image. Inspect transitions between files with different dimensions.

3. Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- Create or select the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding stream settings in OBS. The key is password-like: keep it private and do not show it in screenshots, overlays or public instructions.
- YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. If you use a custom stream key, YouTube’s encoder settings page says manual resolution detection can be selected there.
4. Configure the encoder for 720p
For H.264 ingestion, YouTube’s current encoder table recommends an 8 Mbps video bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60. The bitrate is an ingest recommendation, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive a 720p rendition.

- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s detailed audio guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo.
- Transport: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
H.264 is a common baseline for a simple software workflow. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingest; use those only if your encoder supports them and they fit your workflow. Match frame rate and audio settings to the source material where practical.
5. Test the complete stream and monitor it
- Confirm the OBS preview is 1280×720 and the playlist advances, loops or ends as intended.
- Listen for missing, clipped or unexpectedly quiet audio. Check that no source goes blank between clips.
- Verify YouTube receives the signal and review its stream-health messages before and during the event.
- Check upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total bitrate requirement, including primary, backup and other stream bitrate needs.
Do a test with representative movement and audio, then preview the event before starting the public broadcast. A static clip may conceal problems that only appear during motion, transitions or audio changes.

What “without upscaling” does—and does not—mean
Setting OBS’s output to 1280×720 avoids configuring OBS to produce a larger stream frame. It does not guarantee that YouTube will deliver one identical 720p rendition to every viewer: YouTube Help says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.
If a playlist includes files below 720p, putting them on a 1280×720 canvas cannot add genuine source detail, and the software may scale them as part of composition. The practical approach is to use 1280×720 source files and a 1280×720 output, avoid enlarging smaller sources where possible, and avoid raising the output to 1080p or 4K. This is an operational way to avoid asking for a larger output, not a guarantee that every internal decode or composition step bypasses scaling.

Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing from the source list
Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS, such as 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installation and check the source list again.
The video is stretched, cropped or surrounded by bars
Check the source’s aspect ratio against the 16:9 output. Use a fit or contain treatment to preserve the whole image; bars can be the correct result when the source is not 16:9. Do not stretch it to fill the canvas if preserving proportions matters.

The playlist stops, shuffles or pauses unexpectedly
Check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. If the source becomes hidden during a scene change, review its hidden-source behavior and test that transition.
YouTube does not receive the stream
Confirm that OBS has the server URL and stream key for the selected event, and that the key has not been exposed or replaced. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm that the encoder is sending a supported configuration.
