How to Stream a 24/7 YouTube Playlist with FFmpeg Using an M3U File

An M3U list selects local videos; FFmpeg still needs a compatible live output and YouTube ingest connection. Learn how to prepare files, configure and test the stream, and handle interruptions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can use FFmpeg to feed a playlist of local videos to YouTube Live, but an M3U file alone does not create a livestream. The list tells FFmpeg which files to play; FFmpeg must also encode or package a compatible live feed and send it to the ingest URL using the stream key for your YouTube event. For a 24/7 run, the machine, files, and internet connection must stay available, and you need a plan for failures.

What an M3U file does—and what it does not do

A local M3U-style playlist is a convenient ordered list of media files. FFmpeg can read that list as input, but it still needs to produce an encoder feed for YouTube Live. YouTube’s ordinary encoder workflow uses the ingest protocol and server URL shown for the event, together with its stream key (YouTube encoder setup).

Do not confuse a local M3U input list with an M3U8 file created by FFmpeg’s HLS muxer. HLS output consists of a manifest plus media segments; it is not the same thing as a list of local videos, nor is it YouTube’s ordinary RTMP/RTMPS encoder connection. YouTube documents HLS ingest separately for specialized cases (FFmpeg formats; YouTube HLS setup).

Before you start

  • Install an FFmpeg build that includes the demuxers, encoders, and protocols your chosen workflow requires. Check the installed build and its documentation; list-file syntax and supported options can vary by operating system and build (FFmpeg CLI documentation).
  • Put the source videos on storage that will remain mounted and accessible for the full run. Confirm every path in the playlist resolves on the machine running FFmpeg.
  • Choose whether to use the concat demuxer (only when files have compatible streams) or a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes for a consistent output.
  • Create or open the YouTube Live event and retrieve its current ingest URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it acts like a password for sending video to the event (manage live stream settings).
  • Test the full playlist path, audio, moving video, upload capacity, and recovery process before relying on a long-running stream.

Check YouTube eligibility and rights first

YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and meet the stated minimum age of 16 to live stream. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio because eligibility and platform rules can change (YouTube live streaming eligibility).

You also need the rights to broadcast every video and audio track in the playlist. YouTube’s livestream terms say the broadcaster represents that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including applicable music licensing rights (YouTube livestream terms). A song being available online or included in a purchased file does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it.

Prepare the M3U playlist and inspect the files

Build and validate the ordered list

Create a local text playlist containing the media paths in the order you want them played, using the syntax supported by your FFmpeg build and operating system. Relative paths depend on the working directory, so absolute paths can reduce ambiguity for a long-running process. The sources do not establish one list syntax that works unchanged on every system: verify it against the installed FFmpeg documentation and test it with your actual files before leaving it running.

Inspect representative files for their video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and duration. A playlist can be syntactically valid and still fail later if an entry is missing, a path changes, or one file has a stream layout incompatible with the chosen concatenation method.

Choose the right concatenation method

Method When it fits Trade-off
Concat demuxer Input files have matching, compatible streams and time bases. Can avoid re-encoding, but mixed codecs, stream layouts, or time bases can violate its assumptions and cause failures or bad output.
Concat filter Files need to be normalized or re-encoded to produce a consistent output. Provides a route to a unified output, but encoding consumes processing capacity and requires suitable output settings.

FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer, which can avoid re-encoding when streams match, from the concat filter, which is appropriate when re-encoding is needed (FFmpeg FAQ). A 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion also cautions that the demuxer expects matching streams, codecs, and time bases; its transcode suggestions are community advice, not a YouTube requirement (FFmpeg-user discussion, September 2024).

Set up the YouTube Live event and protect the key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room; create an event or open the event you intend to use.
  2. In the event’s stream settings, copy the current server/ingest URL and stream key. Follow the protocol shown for that key rather than assuming a URL or protocol from an old example.
  3. Provide the URL and key to FFmpeg using the syntax appropriate to your chosen FFmpeg output. Avoid pasting a real key into public scripts, examples, screenshots, or logs; anyone with the credential may be able to send a feed to the event.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before starting the event for viewers.

YouTube’s general encoder guidance identifies RTMP/RTMPS as the typical encoder path. HLS ingest is a separate setup with its own requirements and segment-based delivery, so use it only if your use case and encoder support it (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube HLS setup).

Choose and test encoder settings

Use the current settings guidance for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity you intend to use. YouTube’s general page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, the page gives 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are YouTube-published recommendations, not measurements of your connection or FFmpeg setup. Check the live guidance again when configuring the encoder because platform recommendations can change (YouTube encoder settings).

Run the stream continuously and plan recovery

“24/7” is the intended operating schedule, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. The process depends on the host remaining powered and healthy, the files remaining accessible, FFmpeg continuing to run, and the network reaching YouTube. Changing media properties, missing files, encoder errors, host failure, network loss, or a stream restriction can interrupt the feed.

  1. Run a representative test for long enough to reveal playlist transitions and audio/video issues.
  2. Monitor FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health; confirm the live event is accessible as intended.
  3. Decide how you will detect a stopped process, restore network access, and restart the feed. Do not assume a particular command or machine will recover automatically.
  4. Check available CPU, memory, storage, and power under the actual workload. No single minimum hardware specification is established here; load depends especially on whether the streams are copied or re-encoded, their resolution and codecs, and whether hardware encoding is used.

YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but its guidance does not guarantee continuous operation for a particular FFmpeg command, computer, or internet connection (YouTube streaming tips).

Troubleshooting common failures

  • FFmpeg cannot open a playlist entry: Check the exact path, file permissions, working directory, mounted storage, and list syntax. Test entries on the same machine and account that will run the continuous process.
  • Concat demuxer errors or broken transitions: Compare the files’ streams, codecs, layouts, and time bases. Use the demuxer only when inputs are compatible; otherwise normalize or use a filter-based workflow that re-encodes.
  • YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Recheck the event’s current ingest URL, protocol, and stream key. Confirm the key belongs to the open event, that it has not been exposed or replaced, and that FFmpeg can reach the service.
  • Stream health reports instability: Check whether upload capacity is sustained with headroom above the selected bitrate, and look for local network disruption. YouTube warns that an internet disruption may break the live stream.
  • Video appears but audio does not: Inspect the source audio streams and verify the encoder output contains audio. Include representative audio in the preview test.
  • The stream stops after running for a while: Check FFmpeg’s last output and the host’s power, storage, network, and process status. Confirm that the playlist’s later files are accessible and compatible; then follow your planned restart procedure.
  • The intended HLS output is not accepted as a normal encoder feed: HLS output manifests and segments are not interchangeable with the ordinary RTMP/RTMPS connection. Use the protocol shown for the event’s key, or configure YouTube’s separate HLS workflow only when appropriate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection to remain on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
