How to Stream a 24/7 YouTube Devotional Channel with FFmpeg on OVHcloud

A practical guide to running a continuous devotional YouTube Live feed from an OVHcloud VPS with FFmpeg, including ingest settings, monitoring, rights, and archive planning.

You can run FFmpeg on an OVHcloud VPS to send a devotional video or audio feed continuously to YouTube Live. The basic chain is media on the VPS → FFmpeg → YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. YouTube then processes the incoming stream for viewers. A VPS keeps the encoding job off a home computer, but continuous delivery requires a compatible source, a suitable VPS, process monitoring, and a plan for reconnects. A 24/7 live broadcast is not a dependable replay archive: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and is operated by someone who meets YouTube’s current minimum age requirement of 16. Confirm current eligibility in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help.
  • An OVHcloud VPS with enough sustained CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity for your chosen media and encoding method. The exact fit cannot be determined from the title alone; check the current regional plan specifications and terms before ordering.
  • Devotional media that you have the rights to stream, including the recording, music, performance, reading, artwork, and any video.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS, the source media stored or accessible there, and the YouTube server URL and stream key for the event.
  • A way to supervise and restart FFmpeg, inspect logs, and notice when the YouTube connection or the process fails.

Choose how FFmpeg will handle the media

There are two broad approaches. Neither is universally right; inspect the actual files and test the intended playback before scheduling a public stream.

Mode What FFmpeg does Trade-off
Transcode Decodes the source and encodes it to a YouTube-compatible video and audio profile. Gives control over output format and settings, but requires enough CPU for sustained encoding. Resolution and frame rate affect the workload.
Stream copy/remux Passes compatible encoded audio/video through while changing or packaging the stream as needed. Can avoid re-encoding, but only works when the source codecs and container are compatible with the intended output. It offers less control over the encoded media.

A playlist or loop also depends on how the source files fit together. Different codecs, formats, or stream properties can make seamless transitions difficult. Test the complete sequence, including the transition from the last item back to the first; do not assume that a loop will be gap-free.

Prepare the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream/event and open its Live Control Room. Complete any channel eligibility or setup steps shown there.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key provided for the event. Use the ingest information from YouTube Studio rather than copying an endpoint from an unrelated example.
  3. Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, shared configuration, or unprotected log. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
  4. Use YouTube’s stream controls for the event and verify its status in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end a stream; confirm the event’s state rather than assuming that an FFmpeg exit alone completed every Studio-side step.

Set the ingest and encoder profile

For ordinary YouTube Live encoder delivery, use RTMPS. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL; Google’s ingest requirements specify the RTMPS scheme, a valid YouTube endpoint and app path, and port 443. Use the exact server URL YouTube supplies for your event. YouTube documents HLS for cases such as HDR or codecs unavailable through RTMP(S); it has higher latency and is not the default choice for this ordinary FFmpeg workflow.

Use the current YouTube encoder settings as the compatibility baseline. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate and resolution from YouTube’s current settings table and confirm that the VPS can sustain the required encoding and upload load. Do not copy an unexplained bitrate from a generic command.

Before going live, test the exact video, audio, movement, and playlist transitions you intend to use. Check the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status during the broadcast. A compatible codec alone does not prove that a source is valid or that a VPS can keep up.

Deploy FFmpeg as a continuously supervised service

FFmpeg must have access to the source media and the protected YouTube ingest credentials. Configure it for either a tested transcode profile or a tested compatible stream-copy/remux path, and ensure that the intended playlist or repeat behavior is correct. The correct command depends on your files, codec/container compatibility, chosen output settings, and playlist design; no single command can be confirmed for unseen media.

  1. Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate to the VPS operating system, then confirm the installed build and supported codecs.
  2. Place media in a storage location with enough room for the source files and any separate local recordings. Check that the service account can read those files.
  3. Put the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key in a protected configuration or secret store with permissions limited to the service account. Avoid exposing secrets in shell history or logs.
  4. Run a private preflight test with the planned files and settings. Confirm audio, video, keyframe behavior, playlist transitions, and the YouTube health indicator before relying on it for a public 24/7 broadcast.
  5. Run FFmpeg under the operating system’s service manager or another supervisor. Configure failure detection and restart behavior, retain useful logs, and alert an operator to disconnects or repeated restarts.
  6. Monitor CPU, memory, network use, disk space, FFmpeg logs, and YouTube Live Control Room. If FFmpeg restarts, check the active event and stream status; a restart is not a guarantee of a seamless continuation of the same broadcast.

If you also need a replay, configure a separate local recording and monitor available disk space, file integrity, and retention. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Continuous live delivery and a durable archive are separate requirements.

Size the OVHcloud VPS for the workload

There is no verified “best” OVHcloud VPS tier for this setup without knowing the files, output profile, region, and workload. Before choosing, estimate:

  • Whether FFmpeg will transcode in software or pass through compatible streams.
  • Source and output resolution and frame rate, plus the number of concurrent streams.
  • Continuous upload requirements and the VPS plan’s applicable network terms.
  • Storage for media, logs, and any local archive, including how recordings grow over time.
  • Regional availability, CPU performance, memory, storage type, support, and current plan terms.

Check those details against the current OVHcloud VPS specifications and terms for your region. Do not treat a VPS label or a short successful test as proof that a plan will sustain a 24/7 transcode indefinitely.

Rights and YouTube live-content checks

YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation, including applicable music licensing rights. For a devotional channel, check each song, recording, performance, reading, image, and video—not just the religious or public-domain status of the underlying work. Rights can differ between a composition and a particular recording, and licenses can be limited by territory or use. Review the current YouTube terms and obtain permissions that cover the intended use.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder image, warning, interruption, or termination. If you have a license, the rights owner may still need to allowlist your channel through Content ID; possession of a license by itself may not prevent an interruption. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and resolve rights-holder arrangements before relying on a stream for continuous availability.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not receive the stream Ingest URL, stream key, event state, RTMPS scheme/endpoint/port, VPS network access. Re-copy the current event credentials from YouTube Studio, verify the configured RTMPS URL and port 443, and inspect FFmpeg and network logs. Confirm that the event is open in Live Control Room.
Video or audio is rejected or unhealthy Codec compatibility, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, source file properties, output bitrate/resolution. Compare the actual output with YouTube’s current encoder settings, including a two-second recommended keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. Test the intended source before restarting the public stream.
FFmpeg exits or repeatedly restarts Process logs, file access, resource limits, source errors, network interruptions. Inspect the service and FFmpeg logs, verify media permissions and VPS resource use, then test recovery with the same source. Check Live Control Room after restart; do not assume it resumed seamlessly.
Playback stalls, loops poorly, or has a gap Playlist transitions, mismatched files, CPU pressure, or an interrupted input/output connection. Test the full playlist and wraparound outside the live event, verify that files are compatible with the chosen mode, and monitor resources during the transition.
The live stream has no complete YouTube replay Continuous stream length and YouTube archive behavior. Do not rely on a broadcast longer than 12 hours being captured. Record separately on the VPS and check storage, file integrity, and retention.
A devotional track is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder Third-party content match or incomplete rights-holder allowlisting. Review the specific match in YouTube Studio, confirm that the license covers the recording and intended use, and coordinate Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder where applicable.
