You can run a continuous waterfall-ambience stream from a spare PC by looping a local audio/video source in OBS Studio and sending it to YouTube Live. The PC must stay powered, awake, connected to the internet and running OBS; a spare computer alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. Before leaving it unattended, test the actual scene and connection, check YouTube’s stream-health messages, and make sure you have the rights to stream and archive every recording you use.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and is operated by someone at least 16 years old. These are YouTube’s stated live-streaming eligibility requirements; check the channel’s current status before planning a launch.
- A spare PC that can run OBS Studio and play your chosen waterfall visual and audio continuously. The available information does not establish minimum PC specifications, so test your actual machine rather than assuming compatibility.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen encoder settings.
- A waterfall recording and visual that you have created or are licensed to use for continuous live streaming and, if you keep a replay, archived playback.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are starting points, not a guarantee that your particular PC or internet connection can sustain a stream. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and moving video and monitoring stream health.

Prepare the waterfall audio and visual in OBS
Loop one recording
- Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the stream.
- Add the waterfall image or video as a visual source. A still image is sufficient if you want a static scene; use a moving visual only if you have one you are allowed to use.
- Add the local audio/video file using OBS’s Media Source.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop, then confirm that the audio plays and the visual appears as intended.
Loop a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source and create or select the playlist of files you have rights to use.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source settings.
- Preview the full scene and listen through transitions. Check that the playlist does not end, leave unintended gaps, or reveal desktop notifications or other material.
For a sound-focused channel, set the audio level so the waterfall is audible without clipping, and listen on the actual output path you will use for monitoring. A file that plays correctly once is not proof that the scene will remain correct through repeated loops.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using an encoder setup.
- Open the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio and connect OBS using the stream settings provided there. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not show it on screen, share it, or publish it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before going live.
- In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service and enter the stream key, or use the connection method offered by the current YouTube Studio and OBS versions.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure version of RTMP.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube Studio for the incoming preview, stream health and any warnings before you make the stream public.
Exact labels can vary as YouTube Studio and OBS change. Confirm the live event and stream key in the current interfaces rather than relying on an old screenshot or a key saved for another broadcast.

Choose encoder settings the connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. Those are platform recommendations, not measurements of your PC or ISP. Start with a setting your sustained upload link can handle and verify the result in YouTube’s stream-health panel.

Do not judge capacity from a short speed-test result alone. YouTube recommends testing before starting the live stream with representative moving video and sound, then watching stream health. A static waterfall image may be lighter to encode than moving water, but the actual scene and connection still need a real test.

Test the whole setup before leaving it unattended
- Run OBS with the exact scene, playlist, audio levels, resolution, frame rate and bitrate you intend to use.
- Keep the test running long enough to observe repeated playback and any connection instability; check that audio and picture stay in sync and that the loop continues.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s stream-health status and messages while the encoder is running. Address warnings before treating the setup as ready.
- Confirm the PC will not sleep, hibernate, restart for updates, or lose power under the settings you plan to use. Keep the router and any required network equipment powered too.
- Decide how you or another person will notice and respond if the picture freezes, audio becomes silent, OBS exits, the network drops, or YouTube interrupts the stream.
A UPS sized for the actual PC-and-router load may bridge a brief power interruption, but runtime depends on the connected load and battery. It cannot preserve an internet connection that has failed and is not a 24/7 uptime guarantee.

Make sure the waterfall recording is cleared for live use
Use a recording you made yourself or obtain written rights that explicitly cover continuous live streaming, the relevant territory, monetization if you plan to enable it, and archived replay. Do not assume a file is free to use because it is online, described as “ambient,” or credited to its creator. Rights in a sound recording may be separate from rights in the underlying natural sound.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and can warn, interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects a match. A license may not be enough by itself if the rights holder needs to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist; confirm that requirement with the rights holder before going live. Keep the written permission and any relevant license details available.
India’s Copyright Rules include a statutory licensing procedure for specified broadcasts of published literary or musical works and sound recordings, subject to notice and royalty requirements. That narrow procedure is not blanket permission to rebroadcast any recording, and whether it applies to a particular YouTube ambience stream depends on the circumstances. Get appropriate rights or legal advice rather than treating the rule as automatic clearance.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube will not let the channel start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified, that it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the person streaming meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Compare the encoder bitrate with sustained upload capacity, then lower the target and test again. Check the connection while the representative scene is running, not just when OBS is idle.
- The sound or picture stops after the file ends: Verify that Loop is enabled for a single Media Source or Loop Playlist is enabled for a VLC Video source. For VLC Video, confirm VLC is installed and the playlist plays through.
- The stream starts but the wrong event appears: Recheck the selected YouTube event and its stream key in YouTube Studio and OBS. Keep the key private and reset it if it has been exposed.
- YouTube warns about third-party content or interrupts the stream: Stop and resolve the rights issue with the claimant or rights holder. Check whether the license covers live use and replay and whether Content ID allowlisting is required.
- The stream goes offline when nobody is watching the PC: Check for sleep or hibernation, unexpected restarts, power loss, router or ISP interruption, and OBS exit. Arrange monitoring and a response plan; a UPS can only help with certain short power interruptions.
