YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the right resolution and bitrate depend on the files and the VPS’s sustained network capacity. The example below is a starting template, not a tested deployment: validate it with your FFmpeg build and files before relying on it for a live channel.
Before you set up the VPS
Make sure the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live access can take up to 24 hours to become available, so confirm it in advance in YouTube Live Control Room rather than waiting until launch day. This requirement and timing are from YouTube Help’s encoder setup guidance, checked on October 3, 2026.
Choose infrastructure for continuous outbound traffic
A VPS is the server that stays online and runs FFmpeg; it is not a special YouTube requirement. Before buying one, confirm the provider’s India-region availability, sustained outbound-transfer terms, network capacity, CPU allocation, disk space, and restart or monitoring options. This article does not establish a suitable provider, plan, price, egress allowance, or India-specific performance result. A server marketed as an India VPS is not, by itself, proof that it can sustain your chosen bitrate around the clock.
Estimate outbound data before choosing a plan. At a steady combined output of 4.128 Mbps (4 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio), the stream sends roughly 44.6 GB in 24 hours using decimal gigabytes, before protocol overhead. Actual transfer can differ. Check whether the host counts outbound transfer and what happens if you exceed its allowance.

Prepare the playlist files
Keep the source files on the VPS or on storage the VPS can reliably access. For a more predictable concat playlist, use files with matching codecs, dimensions, frame rates, sample rates, and channel layouts; mismatched media can cause transitions to fail or behave unexpectedly. Make a separate copy of the playlist file and preserve the original recordings. Test transitions, missing files, and the end of the list before sending anything to YouTube.
Set YouTube’s ingest settings
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use. The exact controls shown can vary with the stream setup you choose.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, or support post.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data to and through Google’s servers.
- Set the encoder to CBR and use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose a target the VPS can sustain. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can deliver them. The maximum and minimum columns in YouTube’s settings table apply to AV1 and H.265, not H.264.
- Set audio deliberately. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio options and recommends 128 kbps stereo as an advanced setting. Check that your source audio is audible, in sync, and not clipping.
YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm the current encoder-settings page before launch because platform recommendations can change.
Build and validate an FFmpeg playlist
Create a concat list
For the concat demuxer, make a plain-text file such as playlist.txt, with one file entry per line. Use paths that exist from the FFmpeg working directory; quote paths containing spaces.

Check the documentation for the exact FFmpeg build installed on your VPS, and test this input strategy locally with your actual media first.
Example starting command
The following is an illustrative H.264/AAC command for a 720p, 30 fps output using YouTube’s 4 Mbps H.264 recommendation for that frame-rate range. It assumes the playlist files can be decoded by your FFmpeg build and that the output is sent to the RTMPS endpoint and key supplied by YouTube. Replace the placeholders; never publish a real stream key.

Depending on the ingest details shown, you may need to combine them in the destination URL as in the placeholder, or enter them separately in an encoder interface. The example fixes output to 720p30; do not use it unchanged if your sources, VPS capacity, desired output, or current YouTube settings call for something else. The filter scales and pads to 1280×720, while the GOP of 60 frames at 30 fps corresponds to two seconds.

Test before going live
- Run FFmpeg with the intended playlist and destination settings, but do a private or otherwise controlled test rather than announcing an unverified stream.
- Check that each file begins and ends cleanly, audio remains present, and playback continues when the playlist wraps. Test a missing or unreadable file so you know how the process fails.
- In Live Control Room, inspect the incoming preview and stream health. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health during the event.
- Complete the go-live step required by the selected YouTube stream settings. Starting FFmpeg alone does not necessarily make the broadcast public.
- After the test, verify that the intended audience can see the stream and that the correct playlist is playing before leaving the process unattended.
Keep the stream running and recover from failures
A long-running FFmpeg process needs supervision. Configure the VPS’s process manager or service supervisor to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit, and alert on a stopped process or lost ingest. A restart can restore the feed, but it does not guarantee YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted viewer session. Confirm what your chosen supervisor does on reboot and how it handles repeated crashes; those behaviors depend on your VPS setup.
- FFmpeg exits: inspect its logs for a missing file, decode error, invalid playlist entry, or rejected output. Correct the cause before relying on automatic restarts, or the supervisor may repeatedly relaunch a process that cannot succeed.
- YouTube receives no video: compare the destination URL and stream key against Live Control Room, check VPS connectivity and FFmpeg output, and inspect stream health in the control room. Rotate the key if it may have been exposed.
- Buffering or poor stream health: verify sustained VPS egress and reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the server cannot reliably send the chosen output. Do not select a high preset just because the source file has a high resolution.
- Audio is missing or distorted: inspect the source and FFmpeg logs, verify the audio codec and channel settings, and test the transitions between files. A silent or malformed source will not be fixed by YouTube ingest settings.
- A copyright match interrupts the live feed: check the content rights and Content ID status described below. Repeatedly restarting the same matched material is not a solution.
Plan for replays and long-stream limits
Do not assume YouTube will create a complete archive of a continuous 24/7 broadcast. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving each devotional program matters, use a separate recording and publishing workflow or plan shorter stream sessions; test how session boundaries affect the live viewing experience before switching.

Clear rights before streaming devotional recordings
Devotional subject matter does not automatically make a recording free to use. You need the necessary rights for both the audio and video in every territory where the content is used. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to hold necessary worldwide rights for live content on Google services, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Which permissions apply to a particular composition, arrangement, performance, or recording depends on the material and your circumstances; this article does not determine Indian licensing or other local legal requirements.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its copyright guidance says a placeholder may replace a live stream when a match is identified, and the channel may be warned to stop using the material; continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Confirm permission and any necessary allowlisting before putting a recording into a continuous playlist.
Do not assume a repeated playlist will be monetized
Technical ability to run a continuous stream is separate from eligibility to earn revenue. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization under that policy. A playlist that repeats the same devotional recordings therefore does not come with a promise of monetization approval or revenue.
