Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To restart an FFmpeg stream automatically when power returns, run it as a systemd service and enable that service at boot. Then test an actual reboot and confirm both that the service is running and that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Boot automation restarts the process; it does not by itself fix a missing camera, unavailable network, invalid stream key, or YouTube-side interruption.
Before you configure automatic startup
First make sure the FFmpeg command works when you launch it manually. The service must use the same input source, paths, environment variables, permissions, and stream destination. Your input might be a camera, a file, or another feed; the correct capture command depends on the hardware and software installed.
Do not assume an older raspivid example applies to your Raspberry Pi OS version and camera. A community project documents an FFmpeg-based setup on Raspberry Pi 4, but it is an example rather than a universal command or performance guarantee: project source.
Keep your YouTube stream key private. YouTube describes it as like a password and address: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or exposed log. Restrict access to any file containing it. If the key is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

Create and enable a systemd service
The example below shows the shape of a unit, not a complete FFmpeg command. Replace the placeholders with the command that already works on your Pi, the correct service user, and paths for your setup. The available project example supports the general pattern of installing a unit, reloading systemd, enabling it, and starting it; unit details should be validated on your own device.
-
Create the unit file
Create a file such as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.servicewith a suitable editor. A basic structure is:[Unit] Description=FFmpeg YouTube stream Wants=network-online.target After=network-online.target [Service] Type=simple User=YOUR_SERVICE_USER WorkingDirectory=/path/to/working-directory ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg YOUR_WORKING_ARGUMENTS Restart=on-failure RestartSec=10 [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.targetConfirm the FFmpeg path on the Pi and replace
YOUR_WORKING_ARGUMENTSwith the input, encoding, and YouTube destination arguments from your tested command. The restart delay is an example, not a universal retry policy. Choose dependencies and retry behavior for the actual network, camera, and storage setup.Rank #2

Check permissions and credentials
Ensure the service user can access the input device or file, its working directory, and any configuration containing the stream key. Avoid embedding secrets in a publicly shared script or logging them. If the manual command depends on environment variables, arrange for the service to receive them securely and verify the file permissions.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable youtube-stream.service sudo systemctl start youtube-stream.serviceenableconfigures the service to start during future boots;startlaunches it now. Starting a command once is not the same as enabling it for boot. -
Check status and logs
Inspect the service and its recent logs:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.serviceThe status and journal help distinguish a service that never launched from FFmpeg starting and then failing. Look for incorrect executable or input paths, permission errors, unavailable variables, and connection failures.

Test a real power-restoration scenario
Reboot the Pi and check status and logs again. If possible, also test after the power and network conditions you expect in normal use. A Pi may boot before Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a camera, or mounted storage is ready; configure the unit for those dependencies and verify the behavior on the target Raspberry Pi OS release.

Match the FFmpeg output to YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the protocol and encoding options supported by your FFmpeg build and configuration. Details and current guidance are on YouTube’s live encoder settings page.
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include these examples:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not Raspberry Pi encoding benchmarks. The right target depends on your input, encoding method, and what the Pi can sustain. YouTube advises testing before going live. Its network guidance recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. A process running on the Pi is not proof that YouTube is receiving video successfully.

Verify YouTube is receiving a healthy stream
After starting or rebooting the Pi, check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Verify that picture and audio arrive, not merely that systemctl reports an active process. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health during the event. If the service is active but the preview is missing or unhealthy, inspect FFmpeg output and logs, the stream destination and key, input availability, and network capacity.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
- Service does not start after reboot: Confirm the unit name and run
sudo systemctl is-enabled youtube-stream.service. If you edited the unit, runsudo systemctl daemon-reload; inspectsystemctl statusand the journal for syntax or path errors. - FFmpeg starts and exits: Compare the unit’s executable, arguments, working directory, environment, and service user with the successful manual command. Check whether the input file, device, or mount is available to that user.
- It fails only soon after power returns: The network, camera, or storage may not yet be ready. Review service dependencies and retry behavior for your setup, and avoid a rapid restart loop. Validate changes with a reboot rather than assuming a unit setting works across all Pi models and OS releases.
- Service is active but YouTube shows no healthy stream: Check FFmpeg logs, the destination URL and key, input feed, encoding settings, and sustained upload capacity. Confirm receipt and stream health in Live Control Room.
- Stream drops during operation: Check for network interruptions or insufficient upload headroom. A boot-enabled service handles host startup, but it is not a guarantee against every network or YouTube broadcast failure.
- Stream key may have been exposed: Reset it through YouTube Live Control Room using an owner or manager account, then update the Pi’s protected configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that continues without a Pi or home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps looping from the cloud, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and does not require your computer or home connection to stay on. Uploaded quality is preserved up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and playlists streaming to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
