How to Stream 4K Ultra HD on Netflix: Requirements and Fixes

Netflix 4K requires an Ultra HD plan, stable internet of at least 15 Mbps, Auto or High playback quality, and a supported 4K device and display.

To watch Netflix in 4K, you need an Ultra HD-eligible plan, a stable internet connection of at least 15 Mbps, playback quality set to Auto or High, and a Netflix-supported 4K device connected to a compatible 4K display. External streaming players also need a suitable HDMI connection, typically HDCP 2.2 or later. Every part of the playback chain must support 4K.

What you need to stream Netflix in 4K

  • An eligible Netflix plan: Your plan must include Ultra HD streaming. Netflix’s plan names and features can change, so check its current device guidance and plan details.
  • A stable internet connection: Netflix recommends 15 Mbps or higher for UHD/4K. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of 4K playback; network conditions and other factors can affect quality. Check your connection with Netflix’s recommended speed guidance, which points to Fast.com.
  • Playback quality set to Auto or High: Netflix lists either setting for Ultra HD playback. The available quality options can depend on the device.
  • A Netflix-supported 4K device and 4K display: A television’s built-in Netflix app, a compatible streaming player, or a computer setup may work, but Netflix support is specific to models and system configurations.
  • A compatible connection: For an external player, the TV and HDMI connection must meet Netflix’s requirements, including HDCP 2.2 or later. The display should support 4K Ultra HD at 60 Hz.

Set playback quality to Auto or High

Check the playback-quality setting for the Netflix profile you use. Netflix’s device guidance for LG TVs and streaming media players and Amazon Fire TV specifies Auto or High for Ultra HD playback. If the setting is lower, change it to Auto or High where that option is available.

Choose a device that Netflix supports for 4K

A device that can output a 4K signal does not necessarily support Netflix in 4K. Check Netflix’s guidance for the exact model before relying on it. Netflix documents select Amazon Fire TV devices and the Google TV Streamer for Ultra HD. For a television’s built-in app, consult Netflix’s model-specific guidance and the TV maker’s instructions.

If you use an external player, connect it to a 4K-capable HDMI input on the TV. Confirm that the input supports HDCP 2.2 or later, choose that input on the TV, and check the player’s display-resolution settings. A compatible player cannot make a non-4K display show 4K.

Streaming Netflix in 4K on a Windows computer

A 4K monitor alone is not enough. Netflix’s Windows computer requirements include Windows 11, a supported browser or the Netflix Windows app, supported graphics hardware, a 4K display running at 60 Hz, and an HDCP 2.2-compatible display connection. Some Windows devices may not include the HEVC codec; Netflix notes that the HEVC video extension may be needed.

Netflix treats HDR as separate from 4K resolution. HDR requires an HDR-capable display and compatible system components, and may also require a plan that supports HDR. A 4K stream does not automatically mean HDR.

Why Netflix may not be streaming in 4K

  1. Check the plan and playback-quality setting. Confirm that the plan includes Ultra HD and that playback quality is Auto or High.
  2. Check the connection. Netflix recommends a stable 15 Mbps or higher for UHD/4K. A speed result at or above that figure does not guarantee 4K if the connection is unstable or other factors reduce performance.
  3. Verify the exact device model. Look for Netflix 4K support for that specific TV, streaming player, or computer setup; general 4K capability is not proof of Netflix Ultra HD support.
  4. Check the display and HDMI path. With an external player, confirm the TV supports 4K at 60 Hz, the selected HDMI input supports HDCP 2.2 or later, the correct input is selected, and the player’s output resolution is configured appropriately.
  5. For Windows, check every system requirement. Compare the operating system, browser or app, graphics hardware, HEVC availability, display, refresh rate, and HDCP connection with Netflix’s current Windows checklist.
