You can use a Linux VPS as the always-on host for a YouTube encoder stream: prepare rain audio and visuals you have rights to use, connect an encoder to YouTube over RTMPS, then monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream health. This is a practical setup outline, not a tested VPS recipe; neither a VPS nor YouTube’s guidance guarantees an uninterrupted, indefinite broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. These are YouTube’s stated prerequisites for enabling live streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- A Linux VPS with a sustained outbound connection suitable for your chosen stream bitrate. A VPS is simply the host running the encoder; YouTube supports encoder-based live streams. See YouTube’s streaming methods.
- Rain audio and a visual that you created or have permission to use. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, and unresolved matches can interrupt or terminate a broadcast. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
- An encoder installed and configured on the VPS, plus access to the YouTube Live Control Room to create the stream and retrieve its stream key.
Prepare the rain audio and visual
Choose a recording you own or are licensed to use, and pair it with an image or video you also have rights to use. A rain sound, a loop, or an ambient presentation is not automatically exempt from copyright rules. YouTube says that live streams are scanned for third-party matches; even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. If you rely on permission, check whether the rights holder needs to add your channel to an allowlist.

Make sure your media files play correctly and that the sound is continuous across any loop points. The VPS must be able to read the files for as long as the encoder is running. Keep a copy of the original media and your encoder settings so you can recover from a restart.
Create the YouTube stream and connect securely
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream. Go to YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live. Select the encoder streaming workflow, then configure the stream details and visibility. The exact labels can change; YouTube’s live-streaming setup page describes channel access and setup.
- Copy the ingest details. In the live control room, copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or put it in a public script repository. Use the current URL and key YouTube provides rather than guessing an ingest address.
- Configure the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; it recommends not exceeding four seconds. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Choose a resolution and bitrate the VPS can sustain without congestion, and check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for resolution-specific recommendations.
- Prefer RTMPS where supported. RTMPS tunnels RTMP through SSL. Google’s developer documentation says to use the RTMPS protocol with a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and connection on port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
- Start with a test. Send a short test before scheduling or relying on a long broadcast. Confirm YouTube receives both video and audio, that the picture is moving as intended, and that the stream-health panel reports no unresolved problem. YouTube specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Start the broadcast deliberately. When the encoder is sending cleanly and YouTube reports the stream ready, start the live event in YouTube Studio if the workflow requires it. Verify the public or unlisted viewing page from a separate device.
Run the VPS unattended and monitor it
A VPS keeps the encoder host separate from your home computer, but it does not remove the need to supervise the process and connection. After launch, check that the encoder process remains active, the VPS has outbound connectivity, and YouTube continues to report healthy incoming video. Process supervision and automatic restart behavior depend on the Linux distribution, hosting provider, and the service manager or monitoring setup you choose.

If you use OBS, an increasing dropped-frame count can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS documents this symptom in its dropped frames guidance. YouTube also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during a broadcast.
Troubleshoot common failures

What 24/7 means in practice
YouTube’s examined guidance explains account eligibility, encoder settings, and copyright handling, but does not establish a maximum single-stream duration or promise that a broadcast can run indefinitely. A VPS can keep your encoder host running, but it cannot guarantee the availability of the VPS provider, network route, encoder, or YouTube ingest. Do not assume that an archived replay will cover every hour of a continuous broadcast; the duration and archive behavior are not established by the cited setup guidance.
