To store XRP, choose a wallet based on who controls its keys and how you will protect recovery access. Before sending real XRP, practice with separate Testnet credentials, then verify the payment’s final result in a validated ledger—not just the wallet’s initial submission message. Testnet XRP has no real-world value, and a test transaction does not send funds on Mainnet.
How do I store XRP in a wallet?
Start by deciding who should control the account’s secret keys. A custodial wallet is managed by a third party; a non-custodial wallet puts the keys under your control, along with responsibility for protecting them and your recovery material. XRPL.org explains the trade-offs in its crypto-wallet overview.

- Custodial: The provider manages the account arrangement and may offer recovery through its platform. You rely on that provider and on the transaction options it makes available.
- Non-custodial: You control the keys directly. If you lose the keys and recovery material, you may lose access to the XRP.
Hardware and software describe where keys are stored, not who controls them: hardware wallets store keys on a physical device, while software wallets store them digitally on a connected device. Provider security and malicious software updates can pose risks in either category. If considering a specific wallet, check its current manufacturer documentation for XRP support and the address formats, destination tags, fees, and transaction details you need.

Treat a secret key or seed as control of the account. XRPL.org warns: “If others gain access to your secret keys, they have as much control over your accounts as you do, and can steal or destroy all your money.” Never give a seed or secret key to a person, website, support representative, or remote service. Generate and handle secrets securely; if another computer generated them and transmitted them over a network, someone else may have been able to see them. How do I send a test XRP transaction?
Use the XRP Ledger Testnet to check your workflow without treating the funds as real. Keep its credentials and network endpoint separate from Mainnet: a test-network balance has no real-world value, and test networks can be reset. Follow the official Send XRP tutorial for its test-network flow.
- Select Testnet. In your wallet or client, choose Testnet and connect to a test-network server. Obtain credentials through an official Testnet flow. Do not reuse Testnet credentials on Mainnet.
- Choose a test recipient. Send only to an address you control or to a recipient that explicitly accepts Testnet payments. Confirm the address and any required destination tag.
- Send a small test amount. Check the available test balance and any applicable reserve requirements before signing. These requirements can change, so do not rely on a reserve figure as permanent.
- Check the recorded outcome. Use the wallet’s transaction details or look up the transaction and confirm its final result in a validated ledger. A preliminary submission response—even one that looks successful—is not final confirmation.
A successful Testnet result checks the Testnet workflow only. It does not establish that a Mainnet payment has been sent or verified.

How do I verify an XRP transaction?
Look for the transaction’s final result after it has been recorded in a validated ledger. The XRP Ledger send tutorial distinguishes a tentative submission response from the outcome after validation; a message returned when a transaction is first submitted can change. Do not treat that initial response alone as proof of completion. Check the wallet’s transaction details or use a transaction lookup that shows the validated result.

- The sending and destination addresses are correct.
- Any required destination tag is present and correct.
- The account has enough available balance after applicable reserve requirements and transaction costs.
- The wallet or client is connected to the intended network.
- The transaction’s final result code indicates what happened.

Confirm the address and destination tag
For a hosted exchange or service, the destination address and tag may together identify which customer balance should receive a deposit. The receiving service’s deposit screen is the authority for the exact values. A destination tag is routing information, not proof of identity. XRPL.org explains tag behavior in Require Destination Tags.

An X-address can encode a destination tag in the address itself. Follow the receiving service’s instructions, and do not manually add a duplicate tag if your wallet has already parsed it from the X-address. See XRPL.org’s basic data types reference.
Check the transaction cost
When checked in 2026, XRP Ledger documentation listed 10 drops as the standard minimum transaction cost. The cost can rise with network load, and the fee is destroyed rather than paid to a validator or recipient. Check the current fee immediately before signing; the documented minimum is not a guarantee of the fee for a particular transaction. See Transaction Cost.
