Solar panels can power an electrolyzer during lunar daylight, splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen for storage. When sunlight disappears, a fuel cell combines those gases to produce electricity, water and heat. This regenerative fuel-cell (RFC) loop is a promising way to store solar energy for a lunar outpost, but it remains a developing mission technology—not a flight-proven lunar-night power system.
How a regenerative fuel cell stores solar power
- Generate electricity: Solar arrays supply a habitat or surface system and, when they produce more than current loads need, send surplus electricity to an electrolyzer.
- Store the energy as reactants: The electrolyzer splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Tanks hold the gases until power is needed.
- Generate power in darkness: A fuel-cell stack consumes the stored hydrogen and oxygen, producing electricity and water. The process also releases heat that can support thermal control.
- Recharge when sunlight returns: The water can be fed back to the electrolyzer, closing the regenerative cycle, subject to system design and operating needs.
The storage is chemical rather than electrical: the system converts surplus solar electricity into stored reactants, then converts those reactants back into electricity. NASA describes RFCs as a potential way to help habitats, rovers and other lunar surface systems operate through darkness (NASA Glenn’s overview).

How long must the system supply power?
There is no single lunar-night duration that applies everywhere. A 2022 NASA presentation gives a range of about 100 hours near the south pole to 367 hours at the equator. NASA also describes lunar days and nights as nearly 15 Earth days each; local terrain, site choice and lighting conditions matter. These are planning figures, not a guarantee that a particular site or installation gets a specific uninterrupted period of sunlight or darkness (NASA Technical Reports Server, Power and Energy for the Lunar Surface (2022); NASA Moon overview).
Designers need to size storage for the actual operating profile: essential loads during the dark interval, peak power demand, opportunities to recharge, and the solar access available at the chosen site. A system intended for a long, uninterrupted dark period will require a different storage design from one at a location with more favorable illumination or other power sources.

RFCs versus batteries: compare the whole system
NASA’s 2022 presentation reports RFC specific energy of 320–650 Wh/kg depending on mission energy requirements, compared with about 160 Wh/kg for packaged lithium-ion batteries. Those figures are useful for framing a trade, not proof that an RFC is lighter or better in every installation. Actual system mass and performance depend on the required energy and discharge duration as well as tanks, stacks, thermal hardware and other supporting equipment.
| Approach | How it serves a lunar system | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Solar plus regenerative fuel cell | Stores surplus solar power in hydrogen and oxygen, then uses a fuel cell to generate electricity and heat. | Mission-specific energy and total system mass; discharge duration; reactant storage and supporting hardware; round-trip losses; thermal management; maturity. NASA’s 320–650 Wh/kg figure varies with mission energy requirements and is not a guaranteed value for every complete installation. |
| Solar plus batteries | Stores solar-generated electricity electrochemically for later discharge. | Packaged energy density, usable depth of discharge, cycle life, temperature conditioning and mass at the required duration. NASA’s presentation gives about 160 Wh/kg for packaged lithium-ion batteries in its comparison. |
| Fission surface power | Generates electricity without depending on sunlight; it can be paired with storage for buffering and loads. | Continuous power needs, mass and placement, mission duration, safety and program maturity. NASA’s 2021 design request sought at least 40 kW; that is a historical program requirement, not a current product specification. |
| Radioisotope power | Provides heat and power for uses including night and permanently shadowed operations. | Electrical and thermal output, lifetime, mass, mission fit and maturity. NASA describes Harmonia as a development effort with Zeno Power, not a commercially available lunar unit. |
A NASA study published in 2009 modeled a south-pole case requiring 5 kW net in sunlight and 2 kW net at night over 10 years. Under that study’s assumptions, its RFC configuration had significantly lower mass than its battery configuration. That result belongs to the modeled case; it should not be treated as a general verdict for other sites, loads or system designs (NASA Technical Reports Server, 2009 study).

Thermal control is part of energy storage
A power system has to keep its components within operating temperatures while the lunar environment shifts between sunlight and darkness. NASA’s 2023 thermal-management paper describes an RFC system as more than its electrolyzer and fuel-cell stacks: it also includes fluid and electrical balance-of-plant equipment and thermal-management hardware.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The RFC’s heat is useful, but it does not remove the need for active thermal design. Heat may need to be rejected during operation and retained or distributed when the surroundings are cold. NASA identifies a kW-scale, high-flux thermal switch as a key development need: it must support heat rejection during the day while limiting heat loss at night. Candidate approaches assessed in the paper included a freeze-tolerant pumped loop, passive louvers and variable-conductance heat pipes (NASA Technical Reports Server, 2023 thermal-management paper).

What is NASA’s RFC development status?
In a report dated May 8, 2026, NASA said its Glenn team had completed initial testing in 2025 and was preparing to run the complete integrated system while storing hydrogen and oxygen generated during recharge for the first time. NASA said harsher tests simulating the lunar surface would follow before flight. This describes ongoing ground development; it does not establish that an RFC has already operated through lunar night on the Moon or is qualified for a mission (NASA Glenn, May 8, 2026).

- Location and expected sunlight and darkness intervals.

- Thermal loads, temperature limits and the ability to reject or retain heat.
- Permitted system mass, reliability needs and mission duration.
- Recharge opportunities and whether another generator can supply power when solar energy is unavailable.
Batteries can complement solar arrays and fuel cells. Fission and radioisotope systems are separate generation options: they can provide power without sunlight, but they do not store solar energy. NASA’s 2021 fission request and its Harmonia development work illustrate those alternatives, not a single interchangeable solution.
