Remove batteries when the instructions call for it, and store the decoration clean and dry, away from heat and moisture. Hanging, animated and other models may need different handling.
How to store The Home Depot’s 12-foot Skelly
The Home Depot’s guidance is specific to its 12-foot Skelly, not a rule for every skeleton. Lay the figure down before disassembly, then take it apart in reverse assembly order. Use the original carton if you still have it; otherwise, choose a lidded tote with enough interior length and room for the longest bones, pelvis and rib cage. A generic tote-size label is not enough to confirm a fit. The Home Depot’s storage instructions also say to remove the LED-eye batteries and keep the decoration away from heat and moisture.

Keep the pieces grouped
The retailer’s disassembly guide shows the leg and arm bones placed inside the rib cage, followed by the pelvis and head in the container. Grouping the parts this way makes them easier to keep together and reduces loose pieces shifting around in storage.

Check the instructions for other skeletons
Do not assume that a hanging or animated skeleton packs like a large freestanding model. Product instructions can differ in drying, packaging, temperature and battery requirements.

Dry the decoration before packing
A Haunted Hill Farm instruction sheet says to return its decoration to its original packing once it is completely dry and to store it in a cool, dry area below 100°F, away from heat. Protect hanging and animated models
A manual for a 71-inch animated hanging skeleton advises using its original packaging or a protective container, avoiding direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, and removing batteries before long-term storage. Choose a replacement container by the pieces, not the label
If the original carton is missing, compare the container’s interior dimensions with the largest parts and consider whether the pieces can stay grouped and protected inside it. For The Home Depot’s 12-foot Skelly, that means checking the longest bones, pelvis and rib cage. Use padding only where parts might rub
If disassembled pieces could scrape or knock against one another, separate or wrap them with bubble wrap or packing paper before placing them in a bin. Storage Rentals of America recommends wrapping skeleton bones in bubble wrap and labeling the bin. Treat this as optional general advice, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s packing directions—especially for a large model with a specified carton or tote arrangement.
