It is the authority that can restore access to funds, so anyone who finds a readable copy may be able to use it. Keep a durable backup in a controlled location, consider whether a second secure location is worth the added exposure, and follow the wallet maker’s instructions for the exact backup format.
What a seed phrase backup can do
A seed phrase—also called a recovery phrase, recovery seed, mnemonic, or wallet backup—is an ordered list of words used to restore wallet access. Treat it as a secret, not as a device label or ordinary account note. Ledger describes the phrase as the backup to crypto assets in its seed phrase guidance.

A hardware wallet and its recovery phrase address different risks. The hardware wallet keeps keys offline; the backup can help restore access if the device is lost or damaged. A hardware wallet does not protect a phrase that has been stored carelessly.
Keep the phrase offline and private
Bitcoin.org warns that “Any backup that is stored online is highly vulnerable to theft.” Avoid putting an unencrypted phrase in cloud storage, screenshots, email, or a notes app. Trezor likewise advises keeping wallet backups offline and private in its wallet backup safety guidance.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Do not share the phrase with someone claiming to be customer support.
- Be wary of websites, messages, or people asking for your recovery phrase, PIN, or passphrase. A request for the phrase is not a safe way to troubleshoot a wallet.
- Keep any physical copy somewhere that people who should not have wallet access cannot casually find or read it.
Choose a medium that fits the physical risks
Paper
Paper is straightforward to create, but it can be damaged by fire, water, or degradation. A readable paper copy is also usable by anyone who finds it. If you use paper, store it in a private, controlled place rather than leaving it with everyday documents.
Metal
Trezor says users with 12- or 24-word backups can engrave or punch the words into metal to reduce disaster risk. A metal wallet backup can make the record more durable against some physical hazards, but it does not make the phrase secret: someone who finds a readable backup may still be able to use it. Consider both durability and access control when choosing a medium.

Controlled storage locations
A home safe or safety deposit box are examples of possible controlled locations mentioned by Ledger, not universally safest choices. The available guidance does not certify a specific safe, establish a particular fire rating, or settle local safety-deposit rules. Assess the actual location’s privacy, access arrangements, and physical protections rather than assuming the label “safe” guarantees protection.

Decide whether to keep one copy or more
One location creates a single point of failure: it could be destroyed or become inaccessible. More than one secure location can reduce that risk, but every additional copy also creates another opportunity for discovery or theft. Bitcoin.org supports keeping backups in multiple secure locations; that is not a reason to make indiscriminate copies.

Check that the backup matches the wallet
Wallet backups do not all use the same length or format. Trezor documents 12- or 24-word BIP39 backups and 20-word SLIP39 backups, with formats depending on the device. These are product-specific format details, not proof that every wallet accepts every phrase. Check your wallet’s official recovery instructions before relying on a copy or backup product.
Do not assume a copy is valid just because it appears complete. Use the wallet maker’s documented recovery and verification process; the appropriate steps depend on the wallet and backup format. Avoid improvised phrase-splitting unless the wallet’s documented recovery design explicitly supports it. A separately added passphrase is also another recovery dependency, so consult the wallet’s official instructions before enabling one.

Make the backup useful without exposing it
- Identify the wallet’s backup format. Find the official recovery instructions for your specific wallet and confirm the expected word count and format.
- Create the backup offline. Record it without uploading or saving an unencrypted digital copy.
- Choose a private, controlled location. Consider physical hazards as well as who could discover or access the phrase.
- Use the documented verification process. Follow the wallet maker’s recovery or verification steps to check the backup rather than relying on appearance alone.
- Reassess copies and access. Keep only the copies and locations you can protect; each additional copy increases exposure.
