Store dry, shelf-stable peanut butter snacks in a cool, dry cupboard, and reseal the package after opening. Refrigeration is not automatically needed: follow the product label or recipe, especially if the snack contains perishable ingredients. There is no single household storage time that applies to every peanut butter bar, cracker, cookie, or homemade snack.
Start with the package or recipe
Peanut butter snacks vary in ingredients, moisture, and packaging, so their storage directions and usable life vary too. Check the label for instructions such as “refrigerate after opening” or a specific storage temperature. For homemade snacks, use the recipe’s storage directions; ingredients such as dairy or other perishable fillings may change what is appropriate.

No reliable household shelf-life period covers the whole category. Do not apply guidance for a jar of peanut butter to a bar, cracker, cookie, or other prepared snack.
How to store dry, packaged snacks
- Keep them cool and dry. Use a cupboard away from damp areas and sources of heat.
- Reseal the original package. Close the wrapper or bag securely after opening to limit exposure to air and moisture.
- Use a container if the package will not close. An airtight snack container or other food storage container can help protect opened dry snacks from moisture. USDA advises that dry goods may be transferred to plastic or glass containers for added protection; it does not give a measured shelf-life increase for doing so.
USDA FSIS says dry goods such as dried mixes, rice, cereal, and pasta may mold if exposed to dampness. That guidance supports keeping dry snacks away from moisture, but it is not a shelf-life guarantee for every peanut butter snack.

When should peanut butter snacks be refrigerated?
Do not refrigerate a dry, shelf-stable snack unless its package or recipe calls for it. Refrigerate when the product’s directions specify it or when its ingredients and preparation make it perishable. For peanut butter itself—not a prepared snack—USDA FSIS says it can be kept in the pantry for six to nine months unopened and two to three months opened. Those periods do not establish how long a peanut butter bar, cracker, or cookie lasts.
Peanut butter jar directions are still the best guide for that particular product. A professional nutrition source notes that pantry or refrigerator storage can work for peanut butter and recommends refrigeration for natural nut butters; check the jar label for its instructions.

How to interpret date labels and signs of spoilage
Date-label wording and purpose can vary. FDA supports “Best if Used By” as a way to indicate when a product is expected to have its best flavor and quality. A printed date alone does not establish a universal safety outcome, so use the product’s directions and inspect it for noticeable changes in color, consistency, or texture. FDA advises contacting the manufacturer with product-specific concerns.

USDA FSIS also explains that food dates generally relate to quality rather than safety, and lists off odors, flavors, or textures as spoilage characteristics. Do not taste a snack that shows signs of spoilage; discard it. When the product’s condition or storage history is uncertain, consult the manufacturer rather than relying on a generic date rule.

Why a bar’s commercial shelf life is not a home-storage rule
A USDA Agricultural Marketing Service procurement specification for certain packaged granola and nut bars requires at least six to eight months of remaining shelf life at delivery under ambient conditions. That is a purchasing requirement for specified deliveries—not advice for households and not a guarantee about how long an opened snack stays fresh. Use the individual product’s label for consumer storage guidance.
