You can store Milwaukee batteries outside the workshop only if the spot stays cool, dry, and protected from rain and moisture. Milwaukee warns against storage locations that may exceed 122°F (50°C), including direct sunlight, vehicles, and metal buildings in summer. A shed, case, or gangbox is not automatically safe: the cited manufacturer guidance does not certify any of them for outdoor weather exposure or temperature control.
What makes a storage spot suitable?
Milwaukee’s M18 manual says to store battery packs at room temperature and away from moisture. Its safety instructions also recommend a cool, dry place. In practical terms, use a location that stays dry and does not heat up excessively; a place that regularly becomes damp or very hot does not meet that guidance.

- Keep packs dry: Milwaukee says not to expose battery packs to water or rain or store them in a damp location. See the M18 Lithium-Ion Battery Packs manual.
- Avoid excessive heat: Milwaukee’s Battery and Charger Safety instructions warn against storage where temperatures may exceed 122°F (50°C).
- Choose a stable indoor-like environment: “Room temperature” and “cool, dry place” are the manufacturer’s descriptions; a covered location is not enough if it gets hot or damp.
Can you leave Milwaukee batteries in a shed, vehicle, or outdoor box?
There is no blanket approval for these locations in the cited Milwaukee materials. Judge the actual conditions, not the label on the enclosure: whether it stays dry, avoids rain and condensation, and remains below the manufacturer’s stated high-temperature threshold.

An older M18 manual separately warns that prolonged storage above 120°F can cause permanent capacity loss. These are warnings from different manufacturer documents; follow the manual for your specific pack rather than treating either figure as a universal guarantee of safe storage below that temperature.

Store and charge packs according to their manuals
Milwaukee says authentic M18 batteries must be charged on Milwaukee M18 chargers. Use the compatible charger and follow the instructions for the exact battery and charger; the cited sources do not say that charging in an exposed outdoor location is safe.

- Partial charging does not create a memory effect, and the M18 manual says packs do not need to be run down before charging.
- For long-term storage, consult the pack manual for maintenance directions. An older M18 manual says to charge the pack normally after about a year in storage.
- The M18/M12 Rapid Charge Station can accept up to three packs of each voltage platform and monitors cell voltage, temperature, and charge status. Those features do not establish that the station or batteries can be left outdoors.
