Store diesel in a purpose-built tank selected for the generator or equipment, and treat the tank, connected piping, spill controls, and maintenance as one fuel system. The correct setup depends on whether the tank is aboveground or underground, the system’s total volume, the site’s fire and spill rules, and the equipment maker’s instructions. For U.S. installations, check federal, state, and local requirements before buying or installing a tank; a product listing alone does not establish that it is suitable or code-compliant.
Plan the storage system before choosing a tank
Start with the generator’s fuel requirements and the site, not a tank’s advertised capacity. EPA’s Federal UST Requirements for Emergency Power Generator UST Systems is a federal starting point for emergency-generator systems covered by underground storage tank rules. It addresses installation, reporting, spill and overfill prevention, corrosion protection, release detection, inspections, compatibility, operator training, repairs, financial responsibility, release response, and closure.

- Determine the required fuel supply from the generator or engine manufacturer and the facility’s operating plan.
- Map the full system, including connected tanks and piping, and identify which components are above or below ground.
- Confirm tank and piping compatibility, required controls, installation conditions, and inspection obligations with a qualified installer and the authority responsible for the site.
- Check state and local rules, including the adopted fire-code edition, before settling on a design or capacity.
The available federal guidance does not establish one universally suitable tank capacity or one best arrangement for every generator. Site constraints, fuel demand, and applicable rules determine the appropriate design.

Under EPA’s federal UST rules, a generator-fueling storage system generally meets the underground threshold when 10 percent or more of its volume is beneath the ground, unless an exclusion applies. EPA’s analysis can include connected tanks and underground piping, so do not classify a system based only on the visible portion of a tank. State requirements may be more stringent. Do not assume that every aboveground tank is exempt from other obligations. Fire-code, workplace-safety, and spill-prevention requirements can still apply, depending on the location, quantity, use, and configuration.
Meet fire, workplace, and spill-prevention requirements
For a workplace or facility, verify which provisions of OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.106, Flammable liquids, apply to the way fuel is handled and stored. The standard includes scope exclusions for some fuel-oil tanks connected to oil-burning equipment; whether an exclusion applies depends on the actual installation. Do not treat it as a blanket exemption for every generator tank.

Facilities storing oil may also need to evaluate EPA spill-prevention requirements under 40 CFR Part 112. EPA provides owner and operator guidance and inspection resources through Oil Spills Prevention and Preparedness Guidance and References. Applicability depends on the facility and its storage arrangements. Confirm obligations with the relevant regulator or a qualified environmental professional rather than assuming a rule applies—or does not apply—to every site.

Keep the tank and fuel under ongoing review
Tank condition and fuel quality are maintenance issues, not one-time installation decisions. In a 2016 study of 42 diesel underground storage tanks, EPA found moderate or severe corrosion of internal metal components in 83 percent of the tanks examined. EPA cautions that the sample does not support an estimate of the share of diesel USTs affected nationwide. The finding is a reason to pay attention to tank condition and system performance, not proof that a particular tank is defective or a schedule for inspecting it. - Follow the generator, engine, and tank manufacturers’ maintenance instructions.
- Use the inspection, release-detection, and recordkeeping procedures required for the particular system and jurisdiction.
- Have qualified personnel investigate signs of leakage, corrosion, water contamination, or abnormal equipment performance.
- Ask a qualified fuel-maintenance provider what monitoring or treatment is appropriate for the system and its operating conditions.
There is no single storage-life figure or fuel-testing interval established here for all diesel, tanks, and operating environments. Set maintenance and testing practices using applicable adopted codes, current manufacturer instructions, and qualified advice for the specific system.

Whether an NFPA standard is binding depends on adoption by the relevant jurisdiction and the edition in force. EPA states in its technical compendium: “NFPA standards only apply when jurisdictions incorporate the standards into a regulation.” The NFPA 111 material available for this subject is committee agenda and proposal material, not proof of current adopted standard text. It should not be used on its own to claim a mandatory water-checking or fuel-testing interval. Check the locally adopted standard and the equipment maker’s instructions.

Use a site-specific checklist before installation
