Store Costco food according to what it is, not just where you bought it: refrigerate perishable prepared foods promptly, keep plain commercial bread separate from filled or topped bakery items, and use the package directions when they are provided. For refrigerated leftovers, USDA guidance is generally three to four days; that window does not apply to every Costco bakery product.
How to decide where Costco food belongs
Check the package first for storage directions, then use the food type to choose between the counter, refrigerator, and freezer. Plain commercial bread and rolls have different guidance from cooked prepared foods and bakery items with perishable fillings or toppings.

- Plain bread and rolls: USDA FSIS guidance allows room-temperature storage for two to four days. For longer storage, freezing is a quality-preserving option.
- Prepared meals and cooked leftovers: Refrigerate promptly and use most refrigerated leftovers within three to four days.
- Filled or topped bakery items: Follow the label. Treat fillings or toppings that require refrigeration as perishable; there is no single established shelf life for every cake, muffin, pie, cheesecake, or filled product.
Costco’s general advice is to remove bulky packaging from bulk purchases and transfer food to smaller containers. That is a storage convenience, not a replacement for the product’s own directions. Costco’s food-storage guidance mentions airtight containers, resealable bags, and vacuum sealing as options.

Refrigerate or freeze them promptly
USDA FSIS says perishable food should not sit at room temperature for more than two hours, or more than one hour when the surrounding temperature is above 90°F. Refrigerate food within that limit after purchase, serving, or cooking. Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F or below.

For a large package, divide the food into shallow portions so it cools faster. Cover, wrap, or seal portions before refrigerating or freezing. Hot food may go directly into the refrigerator; there is no need to wait for it to cool on the counter.
Use refrigerated leftovers within three to four days
USDA FSIS recommends using most cooked leftovers refrigerated for three to four days. Freeze portions promptly if they will not be eaten within that period. USDA describes three to four months as a quality window for frozen leftovers; food kept continuously at 0°F remains safe indefinitely, although its quality can decline. Freezing does not make food safe if it was mishandled beforehand.

Reheat leftovers to 165°F. Do not rely on smell or appearance to determine whether food is safe: harmful bacteria may not be detectable. Discard perishable food left out beyond the applicable two-hour or one-hour limit.

Refrigeration can affect bread’s eating quality. If you want to keep plain bread longer, freeze portions in suitable packaging and thaw what you need. These bread-and-roll timeframes are not general shelf-life rules for cakes, muffins, pies, or other bakery products.
What to do with filled, topped, or uncertain bakery items
Use the label’s storage directions for items such as cakes, muffins, pies, cheesecakes, and bakery products with cream, custard, cheese, or fruit fillings. USDA specifically says bread containing meat or hard-cooked eggs must be refrigerated within two hours. For other filled or topped products, the sources do not establish one storage duration that fits every recipe.

If the label is missing or unclear, handle an item with a filling or topping that requires refrigeration as perishable: keep it within the two-hour limit, or one hour above 90°F, and ask Costco or the manufacturer about that specific product’s storage period. Do not apply plain-bread guidance to it.
Choosing containers for bulk portions
Smaller, shallow portions help large quantities cool quickly and make it easier to take out only what you need. Choose lidded containers or resealable bags that suit the intended refrigerator or freezer use, and check the product directions before reheating in a container. A vacuum sealer is an optional way to package food for freezing; it is not required for safe storage.
