To store Bitcoin securely, protect the wallet’s private keys and make sure you can recover them. Bitcoin itself is recorded on the blockchain; a wallet manages the keys that authorize transactions. With self-custody, you control those keys—and take responsibility for keeping them safe and recoverable.
What does a Bitcoin wallet actually store?
A Bitcoin wallet does not hold bitcoin as a file. It manages private keys used to authorize transactions involving bitcoin recorded on the blockchain. Whoever controls the relevant keys can generally spend those funds, so protecting the keys and their recovery information is central to wallet security. Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin FAQ explains the wallet and key distinction.

Self-custody means you control the keys rather than relying on a third party to hold them for you. That brings direct control, but also responsibility: if you lose access and have no usable backup, there may be no way to recover the funds. Bitcoin.org states: “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” Bitcoin.org, “Some things you need to know”.
What is the difference between a hot wallet and a cold wallet?
A hot wallet uses keys on an internet-connected computer or phone, making routine payments convenient but increasing exposure to online threats. A cold wallet keeps keys offline, reducing online attack exposure but introducing physical risks and making transactions less convenient. The SEC’s Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors also notes that cold devices can be lost, damaged, or stolen.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| Factor | Hot wallet | Cold storage |
|---|---|---|
| Online exposure | Higher: keys are used on connected devices. | Lower: keys are kept offline, though this does not eliminate all risks. |
| Day-to-day convenience | Generally more convenient for frequent transactions. | Less convenient; transactions may require an offline signing step. |
| Key control | Depends on the wallet arrangement; with self-custody, you control the keys. | Can be self-custodied; the offline device does not remove your responsibility for keys and backups. |
| Physical risks | Device theft or damage can affect access; backup quality matters. | The device or backup can be lost, damaged, or stolen. |
| Recovery difficulty | Depends on the wallet’s backup and recovery design. | Depends on the wallet’s backup and recovery design; offline storage still needs a usable recovery plan. |
| Technical upkeep | Keep the wallet and connected device current through official channels. | Setup, transaction signing, firmware, and backup procedures may require more care. |
| Cost | Varies by wallet; no single cost applies. | Varies by method and device; no single cost applies. |
Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance advises keeping only small amounts on internet-connected computers or phones for everyday use and keeping remaining funds in a safer environment. Treat that as general security guidance, not a prescribed percentage or personal financial recommendation.
Where does a hardware wallet fit?
A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to keep keys offline while enabling transactions to be signed. It can offer a practical balance of security and usability, but it is not a complete backup plan: setup must be handled carefully, recovery information still needs protection, and a device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Obtain devices through trustworthy channels and follow the manufacturer’s official setup and recovery instructions.

When might offline signing or multisignature make sense?
Technically capable users with a higher threat model may consider offline transaction signing or multisignature. A multisignature policy can require multiple independent approvals, reducing dependence on one device or location. The trade-off is added complexity: you must understand and preserve the policy and recovery information, and verify transaction details on the signing devices. It is not an automatic upgrade for beginners. Bitcoin.org discusses offline signing and multisignature; BIP 388 warns that some descriptor wallet policies may not be recoverable from the seed alone.
What is a recovery phrase (seed phrase)?
A recovery phrase is information a compatible wallet can use to restore access to keys. It is not a customer-support password. Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to access the corresponding bitcoin, so never share it, enter it into a website, or send it in a message—even to someone claiming to be wallet support. Bitcoin.org advises keeping the phrase private and offline, not as a photo or in cloud storage. See its FAQ and the SEC’s custody guidance.

Some common recovery phrases use the BIP39 format. Bitcoin developer documentation describes mnemonics of 12, 15, 18, 21, or 24 words, encoding 128, 160, 192, 224, or 256 bits of entropy respectively. These are format details, not instructions to shorten, alter, or create a phrase yourself. Use the phrase generated by your wallet and follow that wallet’s official guidance. How do I back up my wallet?
Use the backup method that matches the wallet’s design. A recovery phrase is sufficient for restoring many modern deterministic wallets, but it is not safe to assume every wallet works the same way. Bitcoin Core documentation explains that HD wallets derive addresses from a seed and notes that a backup’s age may still affect metadata such as labels. Older non-HD setups can have different backup needs. Bitcoin.org and Bitcoin Core’s wallet-management documentation describe these distinctions.

- Identify the wallet and its backup design. Read its official documentation to find out exactly what must be backed up and how restoration works.
- Make the backup during setup. Record the recovery information as directed by the wallet. Do not improvise a phrase or assume a device backup, password, or app login can restore the keys.
- Keep it private and offline. Store it where other people cannot casually access it; do not photograph it, upload it, or disclose it to support.
- Consider physical resilience and location. A single vulnerable location can become a point of failure. Bitcoin.org recommends considering multiple secure physical locations, balanced against the risk that more copies create more opportunities for exposure.
- Understand recovery before relying on it. Follow the wallet’s official recovery procedure and make sure you know what information and devices it requires. Never reveal a real recovery phrase as part of a test or support request.
- Account for passwords and passphrases. A forgotten wallet password or additional passphrase may block access. Store or memorize them securely, and understand whether losing one makes the backup unusable.
Why complex wallet policies need more than a seed backup
For some descriptor-based wallet policies, the seed alone may not tell compatible software how to find existing funds. BIP 388 warns that losing the policy backup can cause permanent loss and recommends careful policy backup and hardware-signer verification. If you use a non-standard or multisignature setup, document the exact recovery process and preserve every required policy detail—not just the seed. BIP 388.

How do I protect myself from scams?
- Never share your recovery phrase. Legitimate support should not need it. Treat any request for the phrase as a serious warning sign.
- Do not enter it into a website or message link. Use only the wallet’s official software and recovery instructions.
- Keep software current through official channels. Updates can include security fixes; avoid downloads or links sent by unsolicited messages. Bitcoin.org recommends current wallet software.
- Verify each transaction before approving it. Check the destination address and transaction details on the device you use to authorize the spend. Bitcoin transactions are generally irreversible unless the recipient voluntarily returns the funds. Bitcoin.org explains transaction irreversibility.
- Plan recovery and inheritance carefully. Make sure trusted heirs can learn how to find the recovery arrangement when appropriate, without exposing credentials prematurely. Bitcoin.org includes inheritance planning in its security guidance.
Choosing a setup that fits your use
There is no universally best wallet arrangement. Match the setup to how often you transact, how comfortable you are maintaining devices and backups, and what would happen if a device or location became unavailable. A simple self-custody wallet with a well-protected recovery process may be safer in practice than a more elaborate policy its owner cannot reliably restore.
