To store bitcoin safely, match the wallet to how you will use it, keep only a limited everyday amount in a convenient wallet, and make a secure backup that you know how to restore. A wallet manages the keys that control and spend bitcoin; losing those keys or their recovery information can mean losing access permanently. A hardware wallet can reduce exposure of signing keys to internet-connected devices, but it does not replace a backup or a recovery plan.
First, decide who controls the keys
With a custodial service, the provider manages the keys. That can make access convenient, but you rely on the service’s security and honesty. It may be hacked, fail, or freeze access to your funds. If you use one, enable strong multi-factor authentication and understand how account recovery works.

With self-custody, you control the keys through your wallet and take responsibility for protecting them and keeping a usable backup. This shifts the risk; it does not eliminate it. A lost device may be replaceable, but lost recovery information may not be.
Compare wallet types by use and recovery
| Wallet type | What it is suited to | Main tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial online service | Convenient account-based access; the provider handles key management. | You depend on the provider, and access may be disrupted by a hack, service failure, or account freeze. Protect the account with strong multi-factor authentication. |
| Mobile wallet | Portable everyday use, including face-to-face payments and QR-code transactions. | Loss or damage to the phone, or app availability, can interrupt access. Keep only an everyday amount on it and follow the wallet’s backup instructions. |
| Desktop wallet | Self-custody on a computer; some wallets support hardware devices or full nodes. | Computers can be exposed to malware and spyware. Features such as hardware-wallet support and transaction validation vary by wallet. |
| Hardware or offline wallet | Keeping signing keys in an offline environment; a common option to consider for savings. | Less convenient for mobile transactions. If the device is lost and there is no proper backup, funds may be unrecoverable. |
| Multisignature setup | Requiring multiple independent approvals can reduce reliance on one device or location. | Several keys and a coordinated recovery plan must be managed correctly. It adds complexity and is not automatically the right choice for a beginner. |
Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.” That is a general characterization, not a guarantee: security still depends on the device, how it is used, and whether its backup can be recovered. See Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance and its wallet chooser, which also considers transparency, privacy, and fee control.

Keep everyday spending separate from savings
For routine payments, convenience matters; for savings, exposure and recoverability matter more. Bitcoin.org advises keeping only small amounts on a computer or mobile device for everyday use and keeping the rest in a safer environment. That can mean using a hardware wallet for offline self-custody, while retaining a smaller amount in a mobile wallet.
Choose based on the whole setup, not a product label. Consider who controls the keys, how often you need access, the device’s exposure to malware, whether you need full-node validation, and how difficult recovery would be if the device disappeared. The appropriate balance depends on your circumstances.

Make a wallet-compatible backup
A backup is useful only if it can restore the wallet you actually use. Some wallets manage multiple keys, and a partial backup may omit funds. Some require recurring backups as new addresses are generated; many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from a single recovery phrase. Do not assume which model applies: follow the wallet’s own documentation and check what its backup includes.
- Use the wallet’s documented backup procedure. Record the recovery phrase or other backup information exactly as instructed. Do not substitute a generic method or assume that a screenshot, app login, or device copy is sufficient.
- Protect the backup from both theft and loss. Keep recovery information secret. A backup exposed online can be stolen; if an online copy is necessary, encrypt it. Consider multiple secure physical locations and durable storage media, as Bitcoin.org advises.
- Preserve access information. Keep any required password or other recovery details available for the long term. A backup that exists but cannot be decrypted or used is not a workable recovery plan.
- Check recovery before relying on the setup. Consult the wallet’s instructions for verifying that a backup is complete and for restoring it. Avoid experimenting with recovery information in untrusted apps or websites.

Plan for device loss and long-term recovery
If a phone, computer, or hardware wallet is lost or damaged, recovery depends on having the correct backup and knowing how that wallet restores access. Follow the wallet maker’s documented process using a trusted device or application. Do not enter a recovery phrase into a site or app merely because it claims to help; anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet.
Preserve the information needed to use the backup, including any password, in a way that remains accessible years later. Bitcoin offers limited password-recovery options. Bitcoin.org warns: “If you permanently lose access to your wallet—for example by losing your recovery phrase—your funds are gone permanently.” The exact recovery mechanism differs by wallet, so confirm it before relying on a particular backup.

If someone else may need to recover funds for you, create a succession plan that identifies where the wallet and recovery arrangements can be found without casually disclosing the recovery phrase. Balance confidentiality during your lifetime with clear instructions for a trusted person to act if needed. Bitcoin.org notes that funds can be unrecoverable by family or peers when nobody knows where the wallet or recovery information is kept.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat a hardware wallet can—and cannot—do
A hardware wallet is designed to keep signing keys in an offline environment, which can reduce their exposure to malware on internet-connected devices. It still requires careful handling, wallet-compatible backup, and a recovery plan. If the device fails or goes missing, the backup—not the device itself—is what may enable restoration. Bitcoin.org’s wallet listings include individual products and features, but listings and product details can change; consult the chosen wallet’s current documentation.
For any wallet, the safest practical setup is one whose key custody you understand, whose backup is complete and protected, and whose recovery process you can follow without improvising.
