A hardware wallet can reduce some online risks, but it does not remove the need to protect and test your recovery plan.
First, understand what “storing Bitcoin” means
Bitcoin does not sit inside a wallet the way a file sits on a phone. A wallet manages the keys used to control Bitcoin and sign transactions. Your storage decision is therefore about who controls those keys, how they are protected, and whether you can restore access if a device is lost or damaged.

With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting the recovery material. If that material is lost and no working copy remains, a wallet provider or other Bitcoin participant generally cannot restore access for you. A custodial service holds or controls keys on your behalf, which changes the risks rather than eliminating them.

Custodial account
A custodial service may be simpler to use, but you depend on that provider to safeguard access and process withdrawals. Choose carefully and enable strong multifactor authentication where available. Bitcoin.org discusses these trade-offs in its wallet security guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Self-custody wallet
Self-custody gives you control over the keys, along with responsibility for the device, backup, and recovery process. Consider whether you can securely record the recovery material, keep it private, and explain recovery to a trusted person if necessary. A wallet is not a safe choice just because it is non-custodial; the setup and recovery plan matter.
Compare the actual wallet, not just its label
Before choosing a wallet, compare its control model, validation and trust assumptions, transparency, security environment, privacy, fee control, usability, and recovery process. Bitcoin.org’s wallet selector uses several of these dimensions. Listings and capabilities can change, so check the wallet’s current documentation and compatibility before moving funds.
Separate everyday spending from savings
A phone or desktop wallet can be convenient for routine payments, but an internet-connected device is exposed to risks such as malware and theft. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only a small amount for everyday use on a computer or mobile device and keeping the remainder in a safer environment. It does not set a universal dollar amount or percentage: choose a spending balance based on what you can afford to have exposed to those risks.

Consider offline storage for savings
Bitcoin.org describes an offline wallet, also known as cold storage, as providing “the highest level of security for savings.” Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee: an offline setup can still fail through a lost or exposed backup, unsafe physical access, or mistakes during recovery.
What a hardware wallet does—and does not do
A hardware wallet is a dedicated device designed to protect keys and sign transactions. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as a strong balance of security and ease of use and lists them among the more secure options for larger amounts. They reduce some risks associated with signing on an internet-connected computer, but you still need to set up the device correctly, keep its backup safe, and understand how recovery works.
There is no universally best model established by these general recommendations. When comparing devices, check supported wallet software and address or backup formats, update procedures, recovery instructions, transparency, and whether the intended user can operate the device reliably.

Make and protect a recovery backup
A recovery phrase or wallet backup can restore access to funds. Trezor says a backup grants full access to the associated funds, so treat it as a master secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to recover the wallet. Follow the instructions for your specific wallet, record the words in the correct order, and keep the backup private.

Backup word counts vary by format. Trezor documents BIP39 backups of 12 or 24 words and SLIP39 backups of 20 words; these are examples, not a universal standard for every wallet. Do not assume that a phrase from one wallet can be restored in another. Follow your wallet’s current recovery documentation and preserve the exact order and any format-specific details it requires.
Keep a private, durable physical copy
Bitcoin.org recommends secure backups, durable media, and more than one physical location to avoid a single point of failure. Separate copies can improve resilience, but each copy also creates another place that must be protected from theft, damage, and discovery. A metal or otherwise durable backup is not safe merely because it lasts: it still contains information capable of restoring access.

Some wallets require regular backups; deterministic wallets may use one recovery phrase for past and future addresses. Check how your wallet behaves rather than assuming one backup method fits every wallet. Ledger’s hardware-wallet safety guidance, updated May 7, 2024, also advises keeping the phrase private, never sharing it, and not storing it online.
Secure the device and the recovery process
- Use a strong, unique password where the wallet or device supports one, and secure the phone or computer used to manage it.
- Keep wallet software and device firmware current, using the wallet maker’s official instructions.
- Never enter a recovery phrase into a website, unsolicited tool, or support chat. Do not disclose it to customer support.
- Protect the recovery copy from both online exposure and unauthorized physical access.
Encryption can help protect a device or wallet from a thief, but Bitcoin.org notes it cannot protect against keylogging hardware or software. A hardware wallet also does not eliminate other threats: Ledger warns that social engineering, physical threats, and human error remain possible. No single security product or wallet type addresses every failure mode.
Plan for loss, damage, and inheritance
Decide what happens if your phone or hardware wallet is stolen, destroyed, or inaccessible; if you forget a password; or if a backup is damaged. Know how you would restore the wallet using the backup, and make sure the intended recovery process does not require exposing the phrase to an untrusted person or service.

Include succession in the plan. Bitcoin.org warns that funds may be permanently lost if no one knows how to recover them after the owner dies. Arrange access so an intended person can learn what to do when needed without making the recovery secret available prematurely. The right method depends on your circumstances; the essential point is to avoid both an undiscoverable plan and an exposed master secret.
When multisignature may make sense
A multisignature wallet requires multiple independent approvals to spend. Bitcoin.org gives a three-of-five example in which three of five members must approve a withdrawal, and notes that individuals can use multisignature to reduce reliance on one device or location. This adds coordination and recovery complexity: losing too many signing keys or misunderstanding the arrangement can create a new failure point. Use it only if you understand the setup and have a tested recovery plan.
