To store Bitcoin safely, choose who controls the keys, keep only spending funds in an internet-connected wallet, and make a private offline backup that you know how to restore. Bitcoin is recorded on the blockchain; a wallet manages the keys that authorize transactions. A recovery phrase can restore access to a wallet, so anyone who obtains it may be able to spend the associated bitcoin.
Choose who controls your Bitcoin
There are two broad custody choices: manage the wallet keys yourself, or leave key management to a third party such as an exchange. With self-custody, you control spending but also carry responsibility for protecting the keys and recovery information. With a custodial account, you rely on the provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. Bitcoin.org explains these distinctions in its Bitcoin FAQ and custody guidance.

| Setup | Best suited to | Key exposure and recovery | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot software wallet | Routine spending and payments | Keys are managed on an internet-connected phone or computer. Recovery depends on the wallet’s backup method. | Convenient, but malware or a compromised device can put keys at greater risk. Keep only an amount appropriate for regular use. |
| Hardware wallet / cold storage | Longer-term savings | Designed to keep keys offline; access still depends on protecting the recovery backup and following the correct restore procedure. | Requires buying and operating a device, as well as managing its backup. |
| Offline-signing setup | Users comfortable with a more technical arrangement | An offline computer signs transactions; a networked device broadcasts them. The online computer should not hold signing capability. | More setup and operational steps. Bitcoin.org describes this approach in its wallet security guidance. |
| Custodial exchange account | Users prioritizing provider-managed convenience | The provider manages the keys; account access and withdrawals depend on the custodian. | You avoid some self-custody tasks but take on provider and withdrawal-policy risk. |
A common self-custody arrangement is to use a hot wallet for a modest spending balance and keep savings in cold storage. For a more advanced setup, multisignature wallets require multiple independent approvals; Bitcoin.org gives a 3-of-5 arrangement as an example. Multisig can distribute control, but it also makes setup and recovery more complex, so it is not a default beginner choice.

Set up the wallet and backup before moving funds
- Choose a wallet and understand its recovery method. Check the wallet’s current documentation for its backup format, compatible restore options, and whether recovery needs anything beyond the phrase, such as a separately configured passphrase or multisignature details.
- Set up the wallet using its legitimate software and instructions. Keep the device and wallet software current according to the provider’s documentation. Do not follow setup links or recovery prompts from unsolicited messages.
- Make the backup the wallet instructs you to make. Write down the recovery phrase accurately if the wallet provides one. Treat it as secret key material, not as a routine password. Bitcoin.org warns: “Never store your recovery phrase as a photo or in a cloud service, and never share it with anyone.” See its FAQ and Bitcoin vocabulary.
- Store backup copies offline in secure locations. Bitcoin.org recommends multiple secure locations and durable media. Copies can reduce the risk of one fire, theft, or misplaced backup causing permanent loss, but each additional location is also another place an attacker might target. No generic medium should be assumed fireproof, waterproof, or indestructible.
- Check recovery using the wallet’s documented procedure. Confirm that you understand how to restore without entering the phrase on a website, giving it to a stranger, or sending it to a support channel. Wallets do not all use the same restore process.
Before transferring funds, decide how a trusted person could locate the backup if you become unable to manage it, while keeping the phrase inaccessible to people who do not need it. Bitcoin Core specifically discusses inheritance planning in its requirements and warnings.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Protect the recovery phrase and device
- Never disclose the phrase. A legitimate wallet support service does not need it. Anyone requesting it, or demanding bitcoin to “unlock” funds, is not a legitimate recovery step.
- Keep it off internet-connected storage. Do not photograph it, email it, or place it in cloud storage. Those copies can expose the phrase beyond the physical backup location.
- Keep the wallet device and backup separate where practical. The goal is to avoid a single incident destroying or exposing both. Choose locations with access and security in mind.
- Follow the particular wallet’s backup rules. Backup formats and what they preserve differ. A phrase may restore spending access but not every wallet detail or piece of metadata.
Wallet examples and backup differences
Bitcoin.org’s wallet directory describes particular features; these are examples, not proof that one model is right for everyone or eliminates recovery risk.
| Example | Features listed by Bitcoin.org | What to verify for your setup |
|---|---|---|
| Trezor Safe 5 | Open-source firmware, on-device transaction confirmation, PIN and passphrase entry, and Multi-share Backup (SLIP-39). | Current device and restore instructions, compatibility, and how you will protect the backup. Bitcoin.org notes that the owner remains responsible for securing and backing up the wallet. |
| BitBox02 | Bitcoin.org describes offline backups using a microSD card and a BIP39 mnemonic, alongside a companion app. | Current supported restore formats, compatibility, and which backup approach you intend to use. |
A hardware wallet is only one part of a storage plan: you still need to safeguard the backup and use the correct recovery procedure. Product features and availability can change, so check the current device documentation before relying on a particular feature.

What to do if a device is lost, damaged, or compromised
If the device is lost or damaged
Use the wallet maker’s documented restore instructions and the backup you secured earlier, with the wallet’s legitimate software. The correct procedure depends on the wallet; there is no universal recovery sequence. Do not give the phrase to a person or enter it into an unsolicited “recovery” website or tool.

Assume someone who obtained it may be able to access the associated bitcoin. Use the wallet’s official documentation to understand the safest next step for that specific wallet, and do not share the phrase again while seeking help. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so verify transaction details before authorizing a send.

If you have permanently lost self-custody access
A provider cannot reset missing self-custody keys as if they were an ordinary account password. Bitcoin.org states: “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” The statement appears in its “Some things you need to know” guidance.

Bitcoin Core illustrates why you should follow the instructions for the wallet you actually use. Its guidance says an HD wallet can use a single backup to recover bitcoins, while periodic backups preserve labels and other metadata that a blockchain rescan cannot recover. It also advises creating a fresh backup after encrypting the wallet or changing its passphrase because a new seed is generated. These details are specific to Bitcoin Core; do not assume another wallet behaves the same way. Consult the current Bitcoin Core requirements and warnings or the documentation for your wallet.
