How to Store and Use Yeast-Based Materials in a Mars Habitat

NASA has tested engineered-yeast nutrient packs in ISS experiments, while a separate study demonstrated a yeast-and-gelatin construction binder at laboratory scale. Neither is ready for Mars deployment.

“Yeast-based materials” describes two very different ideas for a Mars habitat: sealed packs that could make nutrients on demand, and a laboratory-tested binder that uses engineered yeast, gelatin, and sand to make construction material. NASA has investigated the nutrient packs in spaceflight hardware; the construction binder has only been demonstrated in laboratory-scale tests under simulated conditions. Neither is a ready-to-deploy Mars habitat system.

Two different uses for yeast-based materials

The shared word “yeast” can make these approaches sound more alike than they are. NASA’s BioNutrients work is about storing prepared biological packs and activating them to produce nutrients. The construction study uses engineered yeast as part of a binder for mineral aggregate. They have different inputs, outputs, equipment, safety questions, and levels of demonstrated readiness.

Approach Purpose and material Storage and activation Evidence to date
NASA BioNutrients packs Prepared packs containing dried engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae and powdered growth substrate; the tested strains produced beta-carotene or zeaxanthin. NASA describes an expected five-year ambient shelf-life target for the prepared system. In the tested protocol, crew added sterile water, mixed the pack, incubated it warm for 48 hours, then froze samples for Earth analysis. ISS experiments and mission hardware investigations. Experimental output was not consumed by astronauts.
Yeast-based construction binder Engineered yeast combined with gelatin and inert sand as an adhesive binder. The study tested a laboratory-scale printing process under simulated conditions; it does not establish a habitat storage or operational use protocol. Laboratory-scale demonstration at 0.01 atm and −30°C, not habitat certification or a demonstration using actual Martian regolith.

There is no cited end-to-end trade study comparing the two approaches on common mission assumptions, so their mass, resource needs, and operational readiness should not be treated as directly comparable.

How NASA’s nutrient packs were stored and activated

Storage applies to the prepared system, not yeast in general

BioNutrients packs contain dried baker’s yeast and powdered growth substrate. NASA’s five-year figure is an expected ambient stability or shelf-life target for the prepared organism-and-hardware system, not a universal shelf life for yeast. In a 2024 report, NASA said the two engineered baker’s yeasts in BioNutrients-1 Gen-0 bioreactors had demonstrated 3.9 years of ambient ISS shelf life at that time. That measured milestone is distinct from the later five-year expectation.

NASA describes spore-forming yeast as the more storage-stable form and expects it to remain stable for at least five years in the prepared BioNutrients system. That expectation should not be generalized to grocery-store yeast, a different strain, or a different pack, substrate, or storage setup.

The experimental activation sequence

  1. Add sterile water: Crew added water to the sealed, prepared experimental pack.
  2. Mix and incubate: They mixed the pack and kept it warm for 48 hours under the tested protocol.
  3. Preserve samples for analysis: The samples were frozen and returned for Earth analysis. The experiment did not establish a food-service process, and astronauts did not consume the output.

This was an experimental workflow for a specific engineered strain, substrate, and hardware combination. It is not an instruction for activating ordinary yeast or a validated procedure for a Mars habitat.

Hardware changes and preservation findings

NASA reported in 2024 that BioNutrients-2 Gen-1 bioreactors had 91% less mass than the earlier Gen-0 design. That is a comparison between those hardware generations, not a general reduction in the mass of nutrient production systems.

A separate 2020 BioSentinel preservation study found the highest viability among its tested conditions when yeast was air-dried in trehalose solution and stored at low relative humidity and low temperature. The study also reported sensitivity of dried yeast to low doses of deep-space-relevant ionizing radiation. These findings describe that study’s tested setup; they do not constitute home or mission storage instructions for other yeast preparations.

What the construction-binder study demonstrated

Prototype material and reported test conditions

A 2026 study by Liu and colleagues in Chem Circularity tested an adhesive binder made from engineered yeast and gelatin with inert sand. In a laboratory-scale printing demonstration, the authors reported testing at 0.01 atm and −30°C. They reported approximate mean strengths of 12 MPa in compression and 6 MPa in flexure. These are results for the tested material and conditions, not proof that a structure can retain habitat pressure or withstand years of Martian exposure.

Inputs and process limits

The optimized formulation depends on porcine gelatin derived on Earth and externally supplied microbial nutrients. The authors describe a gelatin-free formulation as a possible alternative, but it was mechanically weaker. The study reports potential for a low-energy process within a defined processing boundary; it does not provide a complete mission mass-and-energy analysis or show that local resources can supply all required inputs.

The demonstration used inert sand, not a full-scale structure made from actual Martian regolith. The results therefore do not establish that the material can be manufactured at habitat scale, reliably sealed, or integrated with pressure-retaining membranes.

What remains unproven for a Mars habitat

The construction paper identifies substantial gaps between a printed laboratory specimen and an operational habitat material. The following properties and capabilities remain to be established:

  • Radiation tolerance and yeast survival under actual Martian conditions.
  • Direct tensile behavior, permeability, and thermal conductivity.
  • Long-term durability, including performance over mission-relevant timescales.
  • Full-scale fabrication and reliable production from actual local material.
  • Closed-loop recovery of resources and a complete mission-level energy and mass balance.
  • Integration with pressure-retaining membranes and other habitat systems.
  • Containment and planetary-protection strategies appropriate to the organism and its use.

Jishen Qiu, the study’s senior author and a civil engineer, said in a reported interview: “I always ask myself: Is there any physical law or fundamental mechanism that prevents us from doing this?” The question expresses the motivation for exploring the concept; it is not evidence that the unresolved engineering and biological requirements have been met.

Why containment and planetary protection matter

Using engineered Earth organisms on Mars raises planetary-protection questions, especially if organisms could escape a contained production or construction process. The National Academies has discussed microbial survival and transport, but that discussion does not provide a mission-approved containment procedure for this proposed material. A future system would need to establish how organisms are contained, monitored, and prevented from being released, alongside demonstrating that the material performs as intended.

What can responsibly be said about use today

For nutrient production, the supported description is a sealed experimental pack activated with water and warm incubation, with samples frozen for analysis. NASA’s project addresses on-demand nutrient production for long-duration missions, but the tested output was not an astronaut food trial.

For construction, the supported description is a promising laboratory-scale binder demonstration—not a build guide or a habitat component ready for deployment. Ordinary dry yeast, gelatin, sand, consumer printers, or generic bioreactors would not reproduce either researched system. The engineered strains, formulations, and hardware are integral to the reported results, and no commercial availability of those systems is established.
