Start with a few broad categories for a mixed collection; add compartments only for parts you regularly need to find. Keep the storage dry and away from heat and direct sunlight.
Choose a sorting method that suits your collection
There is no single official sorting rule. The LEGO Group lists sorting by color, set, size, and type as common options, and says the right approach depends on the builder and collection. A useful test is whether you can find the parts you reach for without creating more categories than your space can hold.

For a mixed pile, begin with broad groups
As a practical starting point, separate bricks, plates and tiles, unusual or large elements, and minifigures or accessories. These are suggested categories, not a LEGO-prescribed hierarchy. You can split a group later if it becomes hard to browse.

For collections kept as sets, sort by set
If you rebuild or store sets together, labeled bags or containers for each set may be more useful than sorting every piece by color or type. LEGO recognizes sorting by set as one option but does not prescribe which method to use.

Decide how much detail your space can support
A few broad groups need less container space and sorting effort. More narrowly separated types can be easier to browse, but need more compartments. This is a practical trade-off, not a measured performance claim.
Measure the space before choosing containers
Measure the usable width, depth, and height of the shelf, drawer, closet, or under-bed area where the collection will live. Then choose containers around that footprint and the categories you actually use. Compare whether pieces will be visible and easy to reach, whether containers can stack or nest, and whether the compartments match your sorting scheme.

The LEGO Group lists clear bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food-storage containers, LEGO storage bricks, and minifigure display cases among its storage approaches. The official guidance does not establish which is cheapest or most durable, so avoid choosing based on an assumed universal winner.
Match the container to the category
- Clear bins: A straightforward choice for broad groups. Measure the footprint; seeing the contents may help identify a bin, but LEGO does not compare visibility performance.
- Tool or craft boxes: Useful when small categories need their own compartments. Match the compartment count to your sorting plan rather than creating divisions you will not use.
- Plastic drawer systems: Keep categories together in a fixed location. Choose a unit whose vertical or horizontal footprint suits the space available.
- Resealable bags: Keep a set or group together, and can be placed inside a larger container. Label them so you can retrieve the right group.
- Food-storage containers: Another option listed by LEGO; choose a size and shape that fit your measured space and category.
- Display cases or LEGO storage bricks: LEGO lists these as options, including for minifigures. Consider whether the form serves your intended category and location.
For small categories you need to browse often, a shallow compartmentalized organizer is a reasonable layout choice; broader bins or bags can hold groups that need less frequent fine-grained access. This is a practical recommendation based on the forms of storage available, not a tested comparison.

Published dimensions for LEGO organizer cubes
The LEGO Group’s Canadian product listing describes its three-piece organizer cubes as suitable for sorting or transporting LEGO parts or small builds. It specifies clear windows and zip closures, and says the smaller cubes fit inside the yellow cube when not in use. The published dimensions are:
- Small cube: over 3.5 in. (8 cm) high, wide, and deep.
- Large cube: over 4.5 in. (11 cm) high, 9 in. (23 cm) wide, and 4.5 in. (11 cm) deep.
These are manufacturer listing details, not independent testing or a claim about how many bricks the cubes hold. The listing is Canadian, so check availability where you live.

Consider modular bins if the space allows
The LEGO Group’s Canadian storage-ideas page names IKEA TROFAST and notes that its varied bins and drawers can hold larger and smaller LEGO items. Since the page does not specify a particular configuration for your room, check the dimensions and availability of the bins and frame locally before settling on a layout.

The LEGO Group’s official help page says: “When it comes to storing your LEGO bricks, we always recommend that you store them somewhere that is dry and away from any heat source.” It also advises avoiding direct sunlight and temperatures above 104°F (40°C), which may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. This is the LEGO Group’s storage advice; the page does not attribute it to an individual.

A simple setup for a tight space
- Measure the location. Record the usable width, depth, and height of the storage area, allowing room to access any drawers or lids.
- Pick a sorting depth. Start with broad categories for a mixed collection, or keep sets together if rebuilding them is the priority.
- Assign containers to categories. Use compartments for small groups you need to find often, and broader bins or labeled bags for the rest.
- Check the fit and access. Confirm that containers fit the measured footprint, can be reached in place, and stack or nest as needed.
- Store the collection appropriately. Keep it dry, out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources.
