Choose a storage method your camera supports, then check that it is recording, set a retention period that fits your security need, and practise finding and exporting a clip. A microSD card is a simple local option; a vendor’s cloud plan can make recordings available through an app; and a NAS or network video recorder (NVR) can centralize recordings if your cameras and setup are compatible.
Choose storage your camera supports
There is no single storage method that works with every camera. Check the manual and the exact model’s feature list before buying a card, recorder, or subscription. For example, Xiaomi lists microSD, Xiaomi Home Secure cloud, and NAS options for its Smart Camera C300, while TP-Link Kasa documents local microSD recording and cloud recordings. These are model- and ecosystem-specific examples, not guarantees for other cameras.

Think about more than convenience when comparing options: whether recording continues without internet, whether a copy would survive theft or damage at the property, who controls account and storage access, and how easily you can find and export an incident clip. A card may be lost with the camera; an NVR or NAS may be lost or damaged at home; cloud access depends on the provider, account, network, and plan. There is no universal risk ranking that makes one method safest for every household.

No universal card size, storage capacity, or retention period applies to all home cameras. The space required depends on the number of cameras, resolution, bitrate, continuous versus event recording, motion activity, and overwrite policy. Use the camera or recorder documentation and calculate for your actual settings rather than relying on a generic “days per card” claim. The available manufacturer and government guidance does not establish a broadly applicable capacity figure.

Set a retention period that fits the purpose
Choose the shortest period that gives you a reasonable chance to notice and report an incident, taking storage limits and privacy into account. Reassess it if the camera’s purpose changes. UK government guidance says, “you should not store any information or images for longer than is necessary to protect your property.” The UK Information Commissioner’s Office likewise cautions that a device capable of retaining footage for six months does not, by itself, justify keeping it that long. Check that recording is working
- Set the date, time, and timezone. Check them during setup and after power or network changes. Accurate timestamps make it easier to match an incident time to a recording; UK government guidance specifically advises keeping system time accurate. UK domestic CCTV guidance.
- Confirm the recording schedule and status. In the camera app or recorder interface, verify recording is enabled for the times and mode you want. Check that the system reports usable storage space.
- Learn the overwrite setting. Find out whether a full card or drive stops recording or replaces older footage. On the TP-Link Kasa example, the oldest local files are overwritten when the card is full; other systems may behave differently. TP-Link Kasa support.
- Test playback and export. Use a short test recording to practise locating footage and exporting it. Confirm that the exported file plays and save it somewhere you can find. Find, export, and preserve a clip
When reviewing footage, start with the camera’s local date and time for the incident. Depending on the system, recordings may be arranged on a timeline, under activity or event tabs, or in a recorder’s playback screen. Check whether the interface separates continuous recordings from motion or activity events. Export the relevant time range promptly if it may be important, especially when storage rolls over. Play the exported file to verify it is intact. For an important copy, keep a simple note of the camera, date and time range, export date, storage location, and anyone given a copy. If footage relates to an insurance claim, legal request, or police investigation, follow the applicable process where you live and preserve the relevant original or export as appropriate. Protect recordings and respect privacy
- Use a unique account password and enable multifactor protection if available. Limit who has shared access to the camera account.
- Keep the camera app, camera firmware, and router software updated. Secure a NAS or recorder physically, and restrict access to its accounts and shared folders.
- Check the manufacturer’s security information and enable available encryption and firewall options. The FTC recommends these steps, and the ICO advises appropriate technical security measures, including encryption where achievable. - Frame cameras around the property areas needed for the security purpose and periodically check their position. If they capture neighbors, public areas, workers, or shared spaces, check the rules where you live: obligations depend on jurisdiction and use.
