To carry a value forward, save it on a Jira entity—usually the issue it belongs to—with Set entity property, then read that property in a later execution. The exact read example cited here is documented for Data Center, so confirm the action and syntax for your Jira edition before relying on it.
Choose storage that matches the state’s owner
First decide what the value describes and which later execution can identify its record. Atlassian’s Jira Cloud actions documentation describes entity properties for work items, spaces, and users related to the trigger work item; it also describes them as usable by apps and indexable or queryable through REST API or JQL. See Jira automation actions.

- Issue-specific state: use an issue property when the value belongs to one issue and a later run will have that issue in context.
- Project- or user-specific state: consider that entity only when it is the natural owner and the action in your Jira edition supports it.
- Global, high-volume, or Jira-unrelated state: assess a dedicated external store or suitable app. The cited Atlassian pages do not establish entity-property size, retention, consistency, transaction, or workload guarantees, so validate the relevant API and deployment constraints before using properties for critical state.
Entity properties are persistent records associated with Jira entities, not a general-purpose database whose limits or transactional behavior can be assumed from the automation documentation.
Write a property for a later run to read
- Open the automation rule editor and add the Jira Cloud Set entity property action, if it is available for the entity and edition you are using. Atlassian’s Cloud action reference describes setting properties on supported entities.
- Choose a stable, unambiguous property key. Use a key that identifies what the value means, and make sure your later rule can identify the same Jira entity.
- Set the property value using the smart values appropriate to the current rule. Decide what should happen if the rule runs again and overwrites the existing value.
- Save and enable the rule, then inspect its audit log to check that the action ran and that the value resolved as intended.
A Create variable action is different: Atlassian describes it as defining a smart value usable in other actions and conditions in the same flow, with a result that is always a string. It is useful for naming or reusing a value within one execution, but the documentation does not describe it as cross-run storage. The same Cloud actions reference covers both actions.

Read the saved value in a later execution
The later rule must have access to the same entity that owns the property. In the explicit Atlassian example, a rule writes an issue property named usernameEmail and reads it as {{issue.properties.usernameEmail}}. That example is in an article labeled Data Center only, updated November 4, 2025; it is not proof that the same walkthrough applies unchanged to Cloud. Check the applicable documentation and test the expression in your own edition: Automation For Jira – How to configure a rule using smart values in the recipient email address.
Conceptually, the later execution needs to resolve the relevant Jira entity, then read the property from that entity’s properties smart value. A rule triggered by an issue event may already have the issue in context; another rule may need to find the intended issue first. Do not assume a property can be read merely because a different rule wrote it.
Run later reads with a scheduled trigger
When state needs to be processed later on a timetable, a Jira Cloud scheduled trigger can run at a fixed interval or with a Cron expression. It can optionally run against issues returned by JQL. Choose a schedule and query that select the intended records, then have the rule read or update their properties. Atlassian documents the trigger options and notes that ten consecutive failed executions automatically disable a scheduled flow: Jira automation triggers.

Scheduling only determines when a later execution occurs; it does not itself preserve state. The property or other persistence mechanism remains the record the scheduled execution reads.

- Open the automation audit log for the relevant rule and execution. Atlassian recommends it as the first place to investigate rule behavior.
- Log the resolved smart value. Use a Log action, or the
{{#debug}}...{{/}}helper, to inspect what the rule evaluates. Follow Atlassian’s Cloud guidance in Debug an automation flow. - Check entity context and key spelling. Confirm the later run is operating on the entity where the property was written, and that its property key matches exactly.
- Refresh issue data when needed. By default, the
issuesmart value reflects trigger-time values during the run. If an earlier action changed an issue field and a later action needs the updated value, add Re-fetch work item data before reading it. This refresh concerns issue data within a run; it is separate from cross-run persistence. Atlassian documents it in Jira automation actions.
What the documentation does—and does not—establish
The Cloud documentation supports Create variable as same-flow reuse and describes Set entity property as Jira-side storage on supported entities. The concrete {{issue.properties.usernameEmail}} read example cited above is specifically from a Data Center article. Verify Cloud behavior and syntax in the version you operate rather than treating the two editions as interchangeable.
The cited material does not specify entity-property retention duration, maximum value size, consistency or transaction guarantees, or workload limits. Those details matter if the value is critical, frequently updated, or large; validate them against the relevant API and deployment requirements before choosing properties for that use.
