Store darts outside clips, and follow the instructions for your specific blaster when clearing jams or cleaning it: foam-dart, Nerf Hyper, and Nerf Pro Gel Fire products do not share one universal maintenance routine.
How to store a Nerf blaster and its darts
- Unload the blaster. Remove darts before storage. Hasbro’s instructions for a covered blaster model specifically say to remove darts before putting it away: Hasbro blaster instruction document.
- Leave it unprimed. Do not store a blaster cocked or primed and ready to fire. Hasbro gives this instruction for a covered blaster model and for Nerf Hyper products; see the blaster instructions and Nerf Hyper instructions.
- Keep darts out of clips. Hasbro’s jam-prevention guidance says, “Do not store darts in the clip.” Keep them in a separate container rather than leaving them loaded: Hasbro Consumer Care: darts jamming when priming.
- Remove batteries for long periods of non-use when the model manual says to. Hasbro’s instruction document for a covered model advises removing batteries if the product will not be played with for a long time. Check your own model’s manual rather than assuming this instruction applies identically to every blaster: Hasbro blaster instruction document.
Store only projectiles designed for your particular blaster. Hasbro advises using undamaged, official Nerf darts; dart type and compatibility still depend on the model. For example, Hasbro identifies the projectiles included with one product listing as Official Nerf Elite foam darts, not as a universal fit for every Nerf product: Hasbro Nerf Minecraft Ender Dragon Blaster listing.

How to prevent and clear dart jams
For a foam-dart blaster that jams while priming, Hasbro recommends pulling the priming handle fully back before moving it forward, seating darts correctly, and using undamaged official darts. Its support guidance also says not to store darts in the clip. Follow the access-door and jam-clearing steps in the manual for your exact model; do not force the mechanism or make opening the blaster part of routine troubleshooting. If a motorized blaster will not fire
For motorized models, Hasbro’s troubleshooting steps are to check that the batteries are properly inserted and new, remove any jammed darts, close the jam door completely, confirm the clip is locked in place, and pull the trigger fully. These checks come from Hasbro’s support guidance for motorized blasters; use the model manual for the jam-door procedure: Hasbro Consumer Care: motorized blaster will not turn on or fire.

Cleaning depends on the Nerf product family
Do not treat cleaning directions for one Nerf family as universal. Hasbro’s cited damp-cloth and soft-item directions apply to Nerf Pro Gel Fire residue; they do not establish a general method for cleaning the inside of all Nerf blasters.
Nerf Pro Gel Fire
For Nerf Pro Gel Fire, Hasbro’s instructions say to lock the trigger for storage and clear round residue from the hopper feed or barrel using a long, soft, clean item. The instructions permit cleaning with a damp cloth or a soft, clean, dry item. Foam-dart and Nerf Hyper blasters
For foam-dart or Nerf Hyper blasters, use the cleaning and jam-clearing directions in the manual for the specific model. Hasbro’s Hyper instructions include product-specific storage and jam-clearing guidance; they do not establish a cleaning method for every foam-dart blaster or other Nerf family: Nerf Hyper instructions.
