Keep filament in a sealed bag or airtight drybox with desiccant, and close it promptly after use. This slows moisture uptake; it does not necessarily dry a spool that is already wet. Storage targets and drying settings vary by filament, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific material and spool.
Why filament storage matters
Many FFF filaments absorb water from the surrounding air, but how quickly and how much depends on the polymer and formulation. Prusa identifies polyamide, polypropylene, PVA and BVOH as materials needing particular attention; UltiMaker also names nylon, TPU and PETG as materials that can absorb moisture quickly. PLA is generally less moisture-sensitive than materials such as nylon or TPU, but it still benefits from sealed storage.

For highly hygroscopic materials, Prusa recommends dry storage or drying before each print. Check the filament maker’s guidance rather than applying one humidity target or routine to every spool.

| Method | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Resealable bag with desiccant | A few spools and occasional access | Simple and inexpensive. Close it promptly after taking out filament; Prusa recommends adding desiccant to vacuum bags and other sealed storage. Prusa’s filament-drying guidance. |
| Vacuum storage bag with desiccant | Individual spools or longer gaps between prints | Helps isolate a spool from ambient air. Check the bag’s dimensions against the spool and reseal it after opening. Anycubic also recommends this approach. Anycubic’s storage guide. |
| Airtight cereal box or gasketed tote | Frequent access or organizing several spools | Add desiccant. A hygrometer inside a larger tote helps you see whether its humidity is rising. Anycubic describes both single-spool boxes and larger containers. Anycubic’s storage guide. |
| Passive drybox | Regular access or feeding filament directly to a printer | Useful for keeping filament in a lower-humidity environment while it is accessible. A passive drybox prevents or slows further moisture uptake; it may not remove moisture already in the filament. Prusa’s USS Drybox documentation. |
| Active filament dryer | A spool that needs drying before printing | Confirm the dryer can reach the filament maker’s specified conditions and safely accommodate the spool. Drying settings are material- and spool-dependent. Prusa’s drying guidance. |
Choose based on material sensitivity, how many spools you store, how often you access them, whether you need direct feeding, and whether you need humidity monitoring. A sealed container with desiccant is for storage; an active dryer applies heat to remove moisture.

- Large Storage Volume -Filament Dry Box Inner Size: 9.29*6.49*9.13 inch. Comgrow dryer box can store 2 rolls of 1kg spools, compatible with PLA ABS SILK filament. Works perfectly with all standard filament diameters 1.75mm/2.85mm.
- Setting Notes - Set the temperature and duration after turning on the filament dehydrator. The machine will work only when the work state is displayed on the screen. If the work mode is not displayed, the motherboard will automatically shut down after 3 minutes. If you have any unsolvable problems with the COMGROW filament dryer box, please feel free to contact us, our after-sales technical team will provide you with detailed solutions within 24 hours.
- Filament Dryer and Remove Moisture - Comgrow 3d printer filament dryer box is designed to keep filament dry and remove moisture from kinds of filaments. Internal heating during printing provides a dry storage environment for 3D printer filaments and keeps the filament dry. Avoid entanglement, clogging, poor adhesion, and layer migration caused by the dampness of the printing wire. (Note: Only used for the drying of 3D printer Filament)
- Real-time Monitoring of Temperature and Humidity - Adjustable temperature range 40°~ 50 °C, the maximum temperature is only 50°C,。setting time from 6 hours to 12 hours. A 2-inch LCD screen and touch buttons make it easy to operate, it is more comprehensive and clear of the information display. Press the power button to start, and hold the function button(M) to change the dry time and the temperature setting.
- Great Sealed Filament Dry Box -The outlet structure adopts a silicone cable sheath and Teflon tube, the outlet is smooth and can be covered with a plug when not in use. The upper cover has a snap button structure, and the sealing performance is good. When the drying box is working, the sealing hole needs to be opened to allow moisture to drain out. When not in use, the sealing hole needs to be closed to keep the consumables dry.
How dry should filament storage be?
There is no single humidity threshold that applies to every filament. Prusa’s USS Drybox documentation gives the following relative-humidity recommendations for its drybox. These are Prusa product guidance, not universal standards; another manufacturer may specify different conditions.
| Material | Prusa USS Drybox guidance |
|---|---|
| PLA | Below 30% RH; short-term tolerance up to 40% RH |
| ABS | Below 30% RH; ideally below 15% RH |
| ASA | Below 30% RH; ideally below 10% RH |
| PETG | Below 20% RH |
| TPU | Below 20% RH; ideally below 15% RH |
| PVA, PC and BVOH | Below 20% RH |
UltiMaker’s general guidance says to keep humidity below 20% for most filaments, while its notes give PVA separate storage considerations. Snapmaker’s filament library recommends storage around 25°C and 40% RH, with vacuum bags and desiccant for longer pauses and protection from direct sunlight. These differing recommendations are a reason to follow the instructions for your particular filament instead of treating a broad rule as a guarantee. See UltiMaker’s storage guidance and Snapmaker’s filament library.

How to store filament between prints
- Check the material’s instructions. Look up storage and drying advice for the specific filament brand and type, especially for nylon or polyamide, polypropylene, PVA, BVOH and TPU.
- Put the spool in a sealed enclosure. Use a resealable or vacuum bag, gasketed container, or drybox. Make sure the closure seals properly and the spool fits.
- Add desiccant. Place silica gel or another suitable desiccant in the enclosure. Desiccant helps keep storage dry; it should not be treated as a quick way to dry a wet spool.
- Monitor humidity where practical. A mini hygrometer can help you track conditions in a tote or drybox and tell you when to service or replace the desiccant. Follow the filament maker’s target if it provides one.
- Limit exposure during use. Return the spool to its sealed storage after printing, or keep it in a suitable drybox if you need to feed from it repeatedly.
How to tell whether filament may have absorbed moisture
Possible signs during printing include poor surface quality, weak layer adhesion, blobs, bubbling, smoke, popping or crackling sounds, and visible or texture defects. Prusa and UltiMaker list these as potential moisture-related symptoms, not definitive tests. Material behavior and other printing problems can produce similar symptoms.

- Check whether the symptoms fit the material’s normal behavior and look for other possible causes before assuming moisture is responsible.
- If the spool is a moisture-sensitive material or the symptoms persist, check the maker’s advice on drying before printing.
Does a drybox dry wet filament?
Not necessarily. Prusa states of its USS Drybox, “The Drybox does not dry filament”; it is intended to slow further moisture absorption. If a spool is already damp, use a suitable active drying method and settings approved for that filament and spool. Do not assume every device called a drybox actively heats or dries filament.

Drying settings are not universal
Prusa’s chart for Prusament gives these examples: PLA and rPLA at 45°C for 6 hours, PETG at 55°C for 6 hours, and TPU at 60°C for 4–6 hours. These settings apply to the named Prusament materials; they should not be transferred automatically to other brands, formulations, or spool constructions. Prusa warns that excessive temperature can soften filament and excessive drying time can harm it. Check the filament maker’s instructions and the dryer’s compatibility before starting.
