You can change that layout in Live Control Room, but YouTube’s documented options do not include a dedicated black-bars setting. If you specifically need portrait footage centered inside a landscape frame, that is a different production setup; check the resulting preview rather than assuming one of YouTube’s vertical-layout choices will add bars.
Change YouTube Live’s vertical layout before streaming
For a dual-stream setup, YouTube lets you edit how the vertical version is arranged. Its default is a center crop, which fills the portrait frame by cutting off the sides of the horizontal image. You can compare the available layouts and adjust the subject’s position in the preview.

- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create, then Go live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage and select the scheduled stream.
- In the vertical preview, select Edit layout.
- Compare Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked. Adjust zoom and position as needed.
- Check the preview before starting the stream to confirm the framing looks right.
YouTube says you can continue making layout changes through the canvas while live, but you cannot add the vertical format after the stream has started. Set up the vertical format beforehand. YouTube’s live-streaming help describes the vertical stream as a center crop of the horizontal stream by default, with other layout options available.

What the three layout choices do—and don’t promise
| Layout | What to expect | Black bars? |
|---|---|---|
| Center crop | Fills the vertical frame by cropping the horizontal source around its center; zoom and position can be adjusted. | No. This is the cropping option. |
| Fit to phone width | A listed alternative in YouTube’s vertical layout editor. Check the preview to see how it renders your source. | YouTube does not document it as a black-bars option. |
| Stacked | A listed alternative in the vertical layout editor. Check the preview to confirm the arrangement. | YouTube does not document it as a black-bars option. |
The official layout guidance does not specify a black-bars toggle, fixed bar dimensions, or a guarantee that these layouts render identically on every device. Do not choose Fit to phone width on the assumption that it will necessarily add side bars.

If you need portrait footage inside a landscape frame
That request is not the same as changing YouTube’s built-in vertical layout. It means composing portrait footage within a landscape canvas so the full portrait image remains visible and the unused space sits beside it. An encoder scene that scales portrait footage to fit a landscape canvas is a general production approach, but the YouTube instructions above do not provide encoder-specific steps or verify settings for OBS or another encoder. Confirm the final framing in the stream preview before going live.
YouTube’s general video guidance advises against adding padding or black bars directly to a video because they can interfere with the player’s ability to adapt dynamically to the video and viewer device. That is playback guidance; it is not a documented prohibition on building a scene in an encoder. Read the YouTube video formatting guidance and test the actual output rather than baking bars into the source file by default.

Test framing before the real stream
Use an unlisted live stream to check the video and audio before relying on the setup for a public mobile stream. Watch the preview and, where possible, view the test on a phone so you can assess the vertical composition in the viewing context. YouTube recommends an unlisted test for checking audio and video quality before a mobile stream. YouTube’s mobile live-streaming help covers that recommendation.
- Check that the important subject is not clipped in the chosen layout.
- Confirm that any encoder-created landscape composition appears as intended in the preview.
- Listen for audio problems during the test, not just after the public stream begins.
Troubleshooting common framing problems
The vertical stream cuts off the subject
The default center crop may be cutting off parts of the horizontal image. Open Edit layout, try another available layout, and adjust zoom or position in the canvas before the stream begins.

I can’t find a black-bars option
YouTube’s documented vertical layout controls list Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked, not a black-bars toggle. For bars around portrait footage in a landscape output, treat that as an encoder-scene composition rather than a Live Control Room setting, and verify the output in preview.
The vertical format is missing after I started
YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added once a stream has started. Configure the format and inspect its layout before going live.
