If calls are going to speaker automatically, change Call Audio Routing: open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing and choose the non-speaker destination you want. If your iPhone is picking up calls without you tapping Answer, check Auto-Answer Calls separately; it controls automatic answering, not where call audio is routed.
Change where call audio is routed
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Touch.
- Tap Call Audio Routing.
- Choose the intended destination instead of Speaker. The available choices depend on your connected devices and may differ by iOS version or language.
Apple says this setting directs audio for phone and FaceTime calls. Possible destinations include the iPhone speaker, a Bluetooth headset, and a hearing device. If you want calls through the phone without speaker output, select the available non-speaker destination that matches your setup. A headset is optional; changing the routing setting does not require buying one. Apple’s iOS 26 iPhone User Guide documents the setting and its destination categories.

If your iPhone answers calls by itself
On the same Call Audio Routing screen, check Auto-Answer Calls. This separate control answers incoming calls after a delay you set; turn it off if you do not want calls answered automatically. Apple documents automatic answering and audio routing as distinct controls, and does not say that Auto-Answer Calls makes audio go to speaker.

Which setting should you change?

If the available options do not match your intended setup, check which audio devices are connected and review the choices shown on your iPhone. Apple’s guide documents the setting, but does not identify why a particular device selected speaker or diagnose a hardware fault.
