How to Stop Your Car From Sharing Connected Data With Google, Meta, and Amazon

There is no universal connected-car privacy switch. Learn how to review vehicle, Google, automaker, and app settings, request deletion, and understand feature tradeoffs.

There is no universal switch that stops every connected car from sharing data. Start in the vehicle’s privacy and connected-services settings, then check any Google, Meta, Amazon, phone, and automaker accounts or apps that are actually connected. The available controls—and what they disable—depend on the vehicle, software, country, and service.

First, identify which system is collecting data

A connected car may have several separate data paths. Built-in Google services, a phone mirrored through Android Auto or another integration, the automaker’s connected-services account, and third-party apps do not necessarily share one set of controls. Turning off a permission in one place does not establish that sharing through the others has stopped. Google notes that settings vary by manufacturer and that changing them can limit features (Google’s connected-car privacy settings guide).

Check the vehicle’s owner’s manual and privacy notice for the exact model and market. Look for categories such as location, trip logs, diagnostics, communications, usage analytics, driver behavior, emergency services, and marketing. Note who receives each category—Google, the automaker, an app, or a connected-service provider—and whether the control is in the car, a phone, an account, or a privacy request form.

How to review Google settings in a car with Google built-in

These instructions apply when Google services are built into the vehicle’s infotainment system. They do not automatically apply to every car with Android Auto, and Google says availability can vary by manufacturer, language, region, and data plan.

Review location and app permissions

  1. On the vehicle screen, open Settings → Location and review the available location controls.
  2. Open Settings → App permissions and review which apps can access location or the microphone. Revoke permissions an app does not need for the functions you use.
  3. If available, check the separate Privacy → Location controls for driver-assistance apps. Google says this control is available only on vehicles running Android 12 or later.

Google documents these controls in its guide to privacy settings for cars with Google built-in. Location may support navigation, real-time traffic, rerouting, search results, and safety-related driver assistance. Check the manual before disabling it, especially if the vehicle relies on connectivity or location for safety features.

Review in-car Maps sharing

In Google Maps on the vehicle screen, open Maps → Settings → Privacy center. Google describes trip and sensor data that can include GPS location, routes, road descriptions, and vehicle sensor status; EV-related data may also be covered by available controls. Review the choices shown for your vehicle in the Google Maps Privacy center information.

Google says some trip-and-sensor data is associated with a rotating identifier rather than a Google Account, while other exploration data may be associated with the account. That describes Google’s stated handling; it is not a guarantee that vehicle-related information cannot be linked in other ways. Turning off automatic offline-map downloads does not delete maps already downloaded. Manage existing offline maps separately in Maps.

  • Quick and Secure Installation: You just need to break the metal hook at a right angle and insert the metal hook into the gap of the car B-pillar or C-pillar, and attach the ties to the armrests, then pull the drawstring tight, the curtain will be firmly fixed on the car window, not easy to fall off. Both installation and removal are very convenient and quick. Tip: metal hooks need to be broken straight by hand to insert into the car pillar gap

Review account activity and saved profiles

Use the in-car Google settings to review available activity controls. You can remove a Google Account, delete a profile, or erase infotainment data, depending on the vehicle. These actions affect the account, profile, or infotainment system; they do not guarantee deletion of records held by the automaker or its partners. Google’s settings guide describes the controls and their availability.

Review automaker connected services separately

Open the automaker’s connected-services settings in the vehicle, its companion app, or its website account. Check whether the vehicle is enrolled in services that collect location, trip or diagnostic data, driver behavior, communications, or usage analytics. Decline optional service or driver-behavior enrollment where offered, and use the manufacturer’s instructions to opt out or discontinue a service if that is your choice.

Controls differ by manufacturer and location. For example, Honda Canada’s connected-product privacy information describes opt-in and opt-out choices and discontinuing connected services for supported vehicles in Canada. It should not be treated as instructions for other Honda markets or makes. The Associated Press has also reported examples of Toyota Master Data Consent, Ford dashboard and FordPass choices, and BMW infotainment privacy settings; these are examples, not universal menu paths (Associated Press coverage of car-data privacy controls).

Check Google, Meta, Amazon, and phone integrations

Do not assume every vehicle sends data directly to Google, Meta, or Amazon. The available evidence does not establish a universal data path or a universal company-specific opt-out for every car. If the vehicle offers Google, Alexa, Meta, or another third-party integration, review that integration’s own account and app permissions as well as the automaker’s privacy notice. The exact steps depend on the make, model, year, country, and integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check the phone’s connected-car app and the account used to sign in. A permission granted to a phone app is distinct from a vehicle’s built-in service setting. Revoke app permissions that are not needed, and review the account’s activity and data controls where available.

How to request access, deletion, or an opt-out

If you want to address data already stored in a company account or cloud service, use the automaker’s privacy portal or app to request access, deletion, or an opt-out where offered. Vehicle-menu controls, removing a Google Account, and erasing infotainment data are not substitutes for a separate request to the automaker or service provider.

Rights and request options depend on country and company. Honda Canada describes additional rights where vehicle data qualifies as personal information (Honda Canada privacy information). The Associated Press reports that U.S. manufacturers differ in how broadly they accept consumer requests (Associated Press coverage).

What the 2026 FTC order covers

In January 2026, the FTC issued a final order concerning GM and OnStar. For covered U.S. consumers, it requires affirmative express consent before covered collection, use, or sharing of connected-vehicle data; a way to request data and deletion; geolocation disabling where supported; and opt-outs for geolocation and driver-behavior collection, subject to limited exceptions. It also includes a five-year ban on disclosures to consumer reporting agencies and provisions that last for the order’s 20-year term. The order applies to GM/OnStar, not every automaker (FTC announcement of the GM/OnStar order).

Understand what may stop working

Connected features can lose functionality when permissions, connectivity, or data sharing are disabled. Depending on the vehicle and service, the impact may include navigation, traffic information, remote access, diagnostics, emergency response, or driver assistance. Google notes that changing settings can limit app functionality and that location supports some navigation and safety features (Google settings guide; Google Maps Privacy center information).

GM told Senator Markey that refusing connected services removes functions that require connectivity, and that in certain vehicles disabling location can still leave emergency and Super Cruise data sharing in place. Do not infer that one location setting stops every data flow; check the specific vehicle’s manual and service terms (GM response to Senator Markey).

Repeat the review when the car changes hands

Before selling a car or returning a lease, follow the model-specific instructions to remove saved driver profiles and accounts and erase infotainment data. Separately review the companion app and automaker account, including any vehicle association or connected-service enrollment. The vehicle-screen reset alone may not address information held by the automaker or its partners.
