How to Stop Your Browser From Offering to Save Passwords

Disable password-save prompts in Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, with platform-specific paths, Firefox site exceptions and troubleshooting when another app or website keeps asking.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop a browser asking to remember a login, disable its password-saving prompt in the browser’s password manager settings. In Chrome, switch off Offer to save passwords and passkeys; in Firefox, clear Ask to save passwords; and in Edge, turn off Ask to save passwords. Safari’s documented controls are labelled AutoFill: on a Mac, clear User names and passwords, and on an iPhone, turn off AutoFill Passwords. These controls do not automatically delete credentials already stored, and stopping a save prompt is separate from stopping autofill.

First identify which prompt you are seeing

Several interfaces can appear to “offer to save a password,” but they are not controlled by the same switch. Identifying the owner of the message prevents you from changing an unrelated setting.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Browser save prompt: the browser asks whether it should remember the username and password after you sign in. Chrome, Firefox and Edge expose explicit settings for this prompt.
  • Autofill suggestion: the browser offers an already stored login in a sign-in field or inserts it automatically. Safari’s Mac and iPhone instructions in particular describe AutoFill controls.
  • Another password manager: a separately installed password tool may display its own banner or pop-up. Its controls are independent of the browser’s password manager.
  • A website prompt: a site can ask you to create, save or use a passkey or password through its own interface. A browser preference cannot provide a universal way to hide every site-designed message.

Look at the message before dismissing it. A browser bar or bubble near the address bar usually belongs to the browser, a small icon inside a username field may indicate autofill, and an in-page box styled like the site may be generated by the website. An icon for a password application is another clue. The steps below change the browser setting. If the message remains, note its wording, icon and location before changing anything else; that usually reveals whether the browser, another app or the website generated it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide what you want to change

There are three separate decisions. You can stop the browser asking to save a new login, stop stored logins from being suggested or inserted, and delete credentials that are already stored. Those choices can be combined, but none should be assumed to happen automatically with another. For example, a person may want no save questions while keeping autofill available, or may want to retain synchronized passwords but prevent them from appearing in fields on a shared computer.

Quick comparison of the available controls

Browser and platform Setting that stops the general browser prompt Can prompts be blocked for selected sites? What happens to existing credentials?
Chrome on a computer Turn off Offer to save passwords and passkeys in Google Password Manager settings. The documented control is global; no site-exception control is specified here. The switch controls offering to save; it is not a delete command.
Firefox Clear Ask to save passwords in Settings > Privacy & Security > Passwords and autofill. Yes. Use Exceptions, add the site and choose Block while leaving the global setting enabled. Changing the prompt setting does not itself erase saved logins.
Edge Turn off Ask to save passwords under Settings > Passwords and autofill > Microsoft Password Manager. The cited setting is global; a site-level exception is not established here. The prompt switch and deletion of stored entries are separate actions.
Safari on Mac In Safari > Settings > AutoFill, clear User names and passwords. The cited Apple instructions do not document a per-site save-prompt list. This controls AutoFill; it does not state that stored entries are deleted.
Safari on iPhone Go to Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords and turn off AutoFill Passwords. The cited iPhone instructions do not document site-specific exclusions. The control concerns AutoFill and does not establish removal of saved passwords.

Menu names can move between releases and can differ between a computer and a phone. If you do not see a path exactly as written, open the browser’s settings search and enter the quoted toggle label. Searching for the label is safer than selecting a similarly named privacy or autofill option by guesswork.

Turn off password-save prompts in Chrome on a computer

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Open the More menu.
  3. Choose Passwords and autofill.
  4. Open Google Password Manager.
  5. Select Settings.
  6. Switch off Offer to save passwords and passkeys.

After the switch is off, Chrome should no longer offer its normal Password Manager save prompt when you submit a login. The wording matters: this option mentions both passwords and passkeys, so it is the relevant Chrome control when the message is associated with Google Password Manager and appears after a sign-in or credential creation event.

If your installed release uses a different menu arrangement, search Chrome Settings for Offer to save passwords rather than guessing at a new path. Search results may take you directly to Google Password Manager even when the visible menu hierarchy has changed.

What this Chrome change does not do

It does not remove usernames or passwords already in Google Password Manager. It also does not necessarily disable every autofill suggestion or a prompt produced by a different password manager or by a website. Treat deletion and autofill as separate decisions. If you only want to stop the question while continuing to use stored credentials, change this switch and leave any separate autofill control alone.

Check the result in the same Chrome profile

Chrome settings are relevant to the profile in which you make the change. Sign in on a page that previously produced the message and observe whether the same Password Manager bubble appears. If it does, check the profile indicator and repeat the setting check in the profile that actually displays the prompt. A different Chrome profile, computer or phone can retain a different preference.

Stop Firefox asking to save passwords

Disable saving requests everywhere

  1. Open Firefox Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll to Passwords and autofill.
  4. In the Passwords section, clear Ask to save passwords.

Clearing this option tells Firefox not to ask generally when you sign in. The setting affects the browser’s own save request; it does not claim to delete logins already listed in Firefox. Existing records remain a separate password-manager task, and an autofill choice can likewise be managed independently.

Keep the feature but suppress it on particular sites

  1. Leave Ask to save passwords enabled.
  2. In the same Passwords section, open Exceptions.
  3. Enter the address of the website that should not trigger a save request.
  4. Choose Block and save the exception.

This is useful when you want Firefox to remember credentials for most sites but never ask on a specific work, banking or shared-device site. It avoids turning off the feature globally just because one website is troublesome. Check the exact site address you enter; an exception for one address does not necessarily represent every related subdomain or a differently spelled address. If a service uses more than one sign-in domain, each relevant address may need its own decision.

To reverse the choice later, return to Exceptions and review the blocked address. You can then remove or change the exception while keeping the global save setting enabled. If you want no Firefox save questions at all, use the global checkbox instead of maintaining a list.

Disable password-save requests in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Edge and select Settings.
  2. Open Passwords and autofill.
  3. Select Microsoft Password Manager.
  4. Turn off Ask to save passwords.

Edge’s labels or menu placement can vary by release. Use the Settings search for Ask to save passwords if you cannot find the item. The switch governs Edge’s Password Manager request; it is not a command to remove credentials already stored there.

Test from the same Edge profile and on the same device that displayed the question. If another profile or a separate password utility is active, changing Edge’s switch will not necessarily affect that other interface. Likewise, disabling the save request does not, by itself, establish that autofill suggestions have been disabled.

Change the relevant AutoFill setting in Safari on a Mac

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Choose Safari > Settings.
  3. Open the AutoFill pane.
  4. Clear User names and passwords.

Apple documents this pane as the place to control saved usernames and passwords that Safari can fill into websites. It therefore addresses Safari’s credential AutoFill behavior. The wording is different from Chrome’s and Firefox’s save-prompt labels, so do not treat the Mac checkbox as proof that every request to save a newly entered password is controlled there.

The cited Mac instruction does not establish that every website-created request to save a new password will disappear. If a remaining message is an in-page dialog or comes from another password application, the Safari AutoFill checkbox is not necessarily the owner of that message.

Do not confuse AutoFill with iCloud Keychain storage

Turning off the AutoFill checkbox does not, by itself, say that saved entries are erased. Apple separately documents that iCloud Keychain can keep website login details up to date across devices when it is enabled. You can stop Safari from filling credentials while retaining synchronized records, or separately manage those records if deletion is your goal.

Before deleting anything, decide whether you still need the login on another Mac, iPhone or other device using the same synchronization service. A setting that changes what Safari fills is not the same operation as removing a record from the password store.

Turn off password AutoFill on an iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap AutoFill & Passwords.
  4. Turn off AutoFill Passwords.

The Apple iPhone guidance describes this as an AutoFill control. It does not establish that every website or system prompt asking you to create or save credentials is disabled. The switch is therefore appropriate when the problem is a stored login being offered in a field, not necessarily when a site displays its own save or passkey dialog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a prompt still appears, identify whether it is an iOS password interface, a website dialog or a separate password application before troubleshooting further. Also confirm that you changed the setting on the iPhone where the prompt appears; changing Safari on a Mac does not automatically document or establish the same behavior on iPhone.

Save prompts, autofill and deleting passwords are three different jobs

Stopping a save prompt

This prevents the browser from asking to remember a new credential. The relevant labels are Offer to save passwords and passkeys in Chrome and Ask to save passwords in Firefox and Edge. Firefox also offers a per-site block through Exceptions. These controls answer the question, “Should this browser ask me to store what I just entered?”

Stopping autofill

This prevents stored credentials from being offered or inserted into sign-in fields. Safari’s documented Mac checkbox and iPhone switch are AutoFill controls. A browser may expose separate save and autofill switches, so changing one should not be described as changing the other. If your goal is to prevent a username from appearing as a suggestion, look for AutoFill or password-filling controls rather than relying only on a save-prompt switch.

Deleting stored credentials

Removing an entry from a password manager is a separate action. None of the prompt switches above says that it erases saved usernames or passwords. Before deleting, check whether the same record is synchronized through a service such as iCloud Keychain, because a synchronized change can affect other devices using that service. If you only need fewer prompts, deletion is unnecessary and may remove a login you still need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the setting that matches your goal

Your goal Use this approach Keep in mind
Never see the browser’s save question Turn off the browser’s global save setting: Chrome’s Offer to save passwords and passkeys, Firefox’s Ask to save passwords, or Edge’s Ask to save passwords. This does not automatically disable autofill or delete stored logins.
Block questions only on selected websites In Firefox, leave the global option on and add each site under Exceptions, then choose Block. The documented browser instructions provide this site-level control only for Firefox.
Prevent saved logins from appearing in fields Change the browser’s autofill control. On Safari, use the documented AutoFill settings for Mac or iPhone. A browser’s save-prompt switch is not the same as an autofill switch.
Remove passwords already stored Open the relevant password manager and delete entries as a separate task. Check synchronization first, especially when iCloud Keychain is enabled.
Keep passwords but stop one troublesome site asking Use Firefox’s Exceptions list, add the precise site address and choose Block. Chrome, Edge and Safari controls described here do not document an equivalent site-level list.

What to do if the prompt keeps appearing

Confirm the correct browser profile and device

Settings apply to the browser installation and profile in which you change them. A second profile, another computer or a phone may still have its own password settings. Repeat the check in the profile that displays the prompt. For a useful test, write down the device, browser name, profile and exact message, then change one setting at a time.

Search for the exact label

Browser releases change navigation. Search Chrome Settings for Offer to save passwords, or search Firefox and Edge settings for Ask to save passwords. In Safari, search the app or system settings for AutoFill and AutoFill Passwords where applicable. Searching the exact words also helps distinguish a save setting from a similarly named autofill or account setting.

Identify a third-party password manager

A separate password manager can place an icon, bar or pop-up beside the browser’s own prompt. Temporarily identify which application owns the interface before changing its settings. The browser switches documented above cannot promise to suppress a prompt generated by unrelated software. If the message disappears when the application’s extension or menu is recognized, use that product’s own preferences rather than repeatedly changing browser settings.

Check whether the website is asking

Some sites display their own “remember me,” passkey or password-creation dialog. A browser-level switch does not provide a universal way to suppress a site’s custom message. Look for the site’s account or security settings if you need to change that behavior. A site can also use more than one domain during sign-in, which is another reason an exception for one address may not cover every page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish a save question from a field suggestion

Dismiss the message and click the username field without submitting another login. If a stored account appears in the field, the remaining behavior is an autofill issue rather than necessarily a save-prompt issue. If a question appears only after submitting credentials, it is more consistent with a save request. This observation tells you whether to review the save toggle or an AutoFill control next.

Restart and test with a clear observation

After changing a setting, open a login page you know previously triggered the message, sign in once and note exactly what appears. Record whether the message is a browser bar, a field suggestion, an operating-system dialog or an in-page box. That distinction determines which setting to investigate next. Avoid changing several unrelated controls at once, because you may not know which change affected the result.

Privacy and shared-device considerations

On a shared or public computer, stopping a save prompt can reduce accidental storage of the next person’s credentials, but it does not remove records already saved. Review the relevant password manager separately if an older login must not remain available. On a personal device, you may prefer to keep stored credentials and autofill while disabling only repeated questions. The correct choice depends on whether the problem is the prompt itself, the appearance of stored logins, or the presence of records you no longer want.

When iCloud Keychain is enabled, remember that website login details can remain synchronized across devices. Turning off Safari AutoFill changes filling behavior; it is not evidence that synchronized records have been removed. Treat synchronization as a separate check whenever you plan to delete entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical checklist

  • Decide whether you want to stop saving requests, autofill, deletion, or a combination.
  • Identify whether the message belongs to the browser, another password manager or the website.
  • Use the exact browser and platform path for the device and profile showing the prompt.
  • Search settings for the quoted toggle if menus have moved.
  • Use Firefox Exceptions when only selected sites should be blocked.
  • Check the exact address entered in a Firefox exception, especially when a service uses multiple sign-in domains.
  • Do not assume that turning off a prompt deletes existing passwords.
  • Review iCloud Keychain synchronization before deleting Safari credentials.
  • Test once after the change and record whether the remaining behavior is a prompt or an autofill suggestion.
  • If the message remains, determine whether another password manager or the website produced it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off the save prompt delete passwords I already stored?

No. The Chrome, Firefox and Edge prompt switches control whether the browser asks to save a new credential; they are not described as delete commands. Safari’s Mac and iPhone controls concern AutoFill. Delete existing entries separately, and review synchronization such as iCloud Keychain first.

Can I stop password-save questions only for one website?

Firefox documents this option. Leave Ask to save passwords enabled, open Exceptions in the Passwords section, enter the site address and choose Block. The instructions covered here do not document an equivalent site-level list for Chrome, Edge or Safari.

Why does a password suggestion still appear after I disabled saving?

Saving and autofill are separate functions. A stored credential can still be offered or inserted even when a browser no longer asks to save a new one. Review the relevant AutoFill or password-filling control, and check whether another password manager is supplying the suggestion.

Why does Safari still show a message after I clear User names and passwords on Mac?

That Mac setting controls Safari AutoFill. A remaining message may be a website-created dialog, a separate password manager prompt or another interface. Identify the message’s icon and location before changing additional settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning off AutoFill Passwords on iPhone erase my saved passwords?

The iPhone instruction describes an AutoFill control and does not establish deletion of saved passwords. If removal is your goal, manage stored entries separately rather than assuming the switch erased them.

What is Chrome’s exact setting name?

On a computer, open More, choose Passwords and autofill, open Google Password Manager and select Settings. Turn off Offer to save passwords and passkeys. If the menu has moved, search Chrome Settings for Offer to save passwords.

What is Firefox’s exact setting name?

Open Settings, choose Privacy & Security, scroll to Passwords and autofill, and clear Ask to save passwords. For selected sites, use Exceptions and choose Block for the address.

What is Edge’s exact setting name?

Open Settings, choose Passwords and autofill, select Microsoft Password Manager and turn off Ask to save passwords. Search Edge settings for that phrase if the menu placement differs.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a browser setting apply to all my devices?

Check each device and browser profile that displays the message. The documented paths are platform-specific, and a second profile, computer or phone may have its own setting. Safari credentials may also be synchronized through iCloud Keychain, which is separate from whether AutoFill is enabled.

What if the website itself asks me to save a password or passkey?

A browser-level switch does not provide a universal way to suppress a site’s custom message. Look for the website’s account or security settings, and distinguish its in-page dialog from the browser’s own bar or Password Manager prompt.

The Bottom Line

Use the browser’s exact save setting for the device and profile showing the question: Chrome’s Offer to save passwords and passkeys, Firefox’s or Edge’s Ask to save passwords, or Safari’s documented AutoFill controls. Firefox is the only option here with a documented per-site block. Keep save prompts, autofill and deletion separate, and investigate another password manager or the website if the message remains.
