Turn off snapshot saving in Settings
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
- Switch Save snapshots to Off.
- Complete the Windows Hello authorization prompt if it appears.
Microsoft documents this setting as the control for stopping snapshot saving; you can turn it back on later. Microsoft’s Recall privacy and control guidance explains the setting and the authorization step.

Know what the system-tray pause does
Select the Recall icon in the system tray and choose Pause until tomorrow for a short pause. Microsoft says this pause ends at 12:00 AM. To resume earlier, use Resume snapshots from the Recall menu. The tray icon indicates whether snapshots are active or paused. Microsoft’s Recall guidance describes the available controls.

Why Save snapshots may be greyed out
Microsoft says the setting may be disabled if the device does not meet Recall requirements or if an IT administrator policy restricts it. Those are documented possibilities, not a diagnosis of your particular PC. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance for Recall describes these causes.

On a work or school PC
Recall is disabled and removed by default on managed devices, and an administrator controls whether it is available. If the relevant policy disables Recall, users cannot enable it themselves. Contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Even when administrators make Recall available, they cannot opt users in to saving snapshots; the user must choose to do so. Microsoft Learn’s Recall management guidance covers these policy controls for Copilot+ PCs.
On a personal PC
Check whether the device meets Recall requirements. If it does and the setting is still unavailable, the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal repair or a device-specific cause. The PC model, Windows build, eligibility, management status, and any displayed error would be needed to narrow it down.

Should you remove Recall?
Removing Recall through Windows Features is a separate option, not the first fix for a greyed-out pause control. Microsoft says removal requires a restart and deletes previously saved snapshots. If your goal is simply to stop new snapshots, first use the Save snapshots setting when it is available.
